  • Thumbs up for Rage Against The Machine :~)

  • @skullking180x The county sheriff released a patrol car video after the NTSB investigation that showed a washed out culvert at the edge of the road crossing. About 10 feet of track was hanging in the air in the patrol car vidoe. I don't know why the department didn't notify the railroad in time. The video release said there was about 20 minutes between the deputy filming the washout and the train hitting it.

  • @allenra530 wrong derailment, that was a CN ethanol train near Rockford IL.... communication failures on the part of CN mostly, although police could've been more proactive in alerting oncoming trains.

  • I remember this night. I thought the whole town was burning. The first casualty would have been that "skin house." The staging area for all the emergency workers was in the Foodland parking lot. Nothing but revolving red lights that night. Of course, during the cleanup, the crews destroyed BIG ROCK (Blue Rock). One more piece of history gone. Love the RATM track in the video. Thanks

  • These pictures belong to me,my son took these after the accident,I shared them with some Norfolk southern workers,I would at least like credit for them,William Hazlett Beaver Falls PA some of them are not mine, but most are.

  • @willhazyblue Check your inbox, I sent you a message.... :)

  • I lived in East Rochester until 2002, when did this happen?

  • @captainamerica1967us october 2006

  • your stupid

  • I was at Cinemark in Monaca when this happened. When I came out I heard people talking about it and headed over. I ended up helping with traffic control 'til early morning. I'm in Brighton Twp's fire department. We ended up being called down on the third day with our newest pumper to cover the cleanup because our truck has two foam tanks on it and the ground was saturated and they were afraid of flash fires caused by sparks. I sat there all day.

  • i remember this. i was at the hot dog shoppe after the sto rox vs new brighton game. the sky lit up in an instant.

  • @gookmarathon Was you able to cook the hotdogs from there? :)

  • Nice job. I remember this derailment and the coverage on KDKA. I live in Chester- right across from the "river line" from Conway to Mingo Junction.

  • N.S. Is the safest railroad in the U.S. it wins the safety award every year. 20 straight yrs. now.

  • i was 3 blocks from there and watched it..crazy

  • Power to the corn oil!

  • Holy Crap!!! What a mess to clean up!!!

  • Yep they do not until Norfolk Southern bomb train explodes thats I wanna call it Norfolk Southern Bomb train like Iraq

  • there are safety rules and regulations however, there are only a handful of inspectors that cover the entire USA

  • i remember that night my brother and my dad got called out for that....we had to watch the hill in patterson heights

  • did they ever figure out the cause of the accident???

  • A steel beem on the bridge came loose and caused the rails to spread apart.

  • Aw fuck

  • ya i remember that. i was sittn in my room on that night and it started to shake. then i herd a bunch of fire sirens a crap. the freacky thing to is i turned 13 the next day, after the crash.

  • How about the Locomotives??

  • 0:08- "MADE IT, MA! TOP OF THE WORLD!"

  • Nofolk southern == Nazi southern

  • wrong, this was a mishap is all, the train's running speed was within the speed the train was being able to go. The speed limit was 40mph and the train was recorded passing by at about 37mph. Then as it was rounding the curve here, it derailed.

  • man this musta suuucked!!!! haha as a railfan this woulda been the KEWLEST thing to see in person. im from the EAST side of PA, (philly) and nothing interesting happens here.

  • there was that 3-hour standoff on the Walt Whitman Bridge, but other than that absolutely nothing happens

  • BOOM! shit i wonder what the people living in that blue house thought 0_o

  • I can remember that accident, I was in bed home on 12th St, heard a loud explosion, sounded like thunder but that was the only loud noise i heard and i did not see any lighting, then i thought it was probley a train accident, well pittsburgh tv station breaking news came on and said an explosen and trsin wreck in New Brighton, they were begining to evacuate people from homes, we were lucky the train wasnt hauling very dangerous hazards cargo, that would have been really bad.

  • I heard that the derailment was caused by a sun-kink or something of that nature.

  • I was there the night this happened - it was probably one of the most exciting events to take place in NB

  • Ha, Yea you are probably right...I thought I saw some of the strippers roasting marshmallows. haha.

  • that song kicks dude...at least e85 is less toxic than gasoline...

  • Hrm...I wonder if some of our castings were on those rail cars? CSX has evil letters out for rail car builders not to buy our castings because the break? PFFFT should look at their rail conditions before blaming people for broken castings... GATX line...

  • I think GATX is fine...see em roll on UP and BNSF all the damn time. CSX is the goddamn problem.

  • CSX & Up are major problems. Derailments constantly. Along with BNSF

  • csx's safety standards are very low, and their track maintenance is rare and poorly done, Union pacific just has the most track in North America, so there probably will be more derailments.

there will always be accidents no matter what railroad.

  • Yes i do know that, and have known it for some time too. Union Pacific does have the most track in America, but they also have enough money to be able to do very good maintence for they're tracks. Yet the compnay seems to still somehow make fools out of themselfs. CSX as well. BNSF had lately made up for itself and is becoming a much safer railroad.

  • UP makes fools of themselves? yeah? They are the most profitable railroad in North America in 2008. So I really don't see they are making fools of themselves.

They run massive amounts of tonnage over the most train miles. They are not the safest railroad, but then again it's easier to have fewer reported derailments if you run fewer trains.

Show us your statistics which prove UP is dramatically less safe than its competitors.

  • Comment removed

  • Being the most profitable railroad absolutely does mean something.

If NS wanted to they could be....are you kidding? Of course they want to be. They are a for profit business. Their management has absolute stockholder and bonus incentives to become number 1.

So again, I don't see UP is anything but the most profitable railroad in the US and safe based on ton miles hauled.

  • By that, what i mean is, when conrail was taken out, NS agreed to spilt the company 60/40. If NS took the entire thing, they'd be easily the biggest RR on this part of the country and maybe even the eastern edges of the midwest. I understand what your saying already.. The other reason there might be much hate on the RR is because of some of the employees and because they were the 8th largest donator to G.W Bush. Which there is nothing wrong with that

  • NS could not have taken the whole thing. They tried...desparately. They spent millions of attorneys to take toal control of Conrail away from CSXT who won the initial bid. The best they could do was negotiate a split.

So there is nothing to the 'if they wanted to" comment. They wanted to, spent tens of millions trying, and lost.

  • Well Dont Forget This, remember the 1996 ( or whatever Year, i forget) attempt on Conrail? If NS, had succeded and came quite close to taking Conrail, this 1999 Spilt never would've happened, but with probably a substandard amount of money to CSX since they too, operated somewhat on Conrail lines.

  • The point you missed is that NS wanted ALL of Conrail. You wrote:

"If NS Wanted To, they could be the 3rd largest RailRoad In America in Class One RailRoads"

What I cannot figure out is WTF do you mean by that. Of course NS wants to be the largest (or at least most profitable).

They did not lose 1/2 of Conrail because they were nice and gave it away. They wanted it badly. They just couldn't pull it off.

  • Yes, very much they did.

What I meant by that was, NS had intentions of retiring large numbers of the older Conrails units. They already have retired a decent amount of the older units and have used them for building newer, more efficent units out there today.

NS very much can and is trying much to make the biggest RailRoad in America. As we all well know, there is very much a big rivalry between the 2 Largest Companies of the east NS is slowly and steadily becoming the largest RR today

  • Wait.

First you worte "If they wanted to they could be"

That makes no sense. Why don't they then. The obviously want to?

What does 'units" have to do with anything here. The number of locomotives doesn't necessarily equate to size of the railroad.

  • NS agreed to split the company???? LOL LOL LOL

Oh man, you need to go back and do some reading.

The only reason they agreed to anything was that the STB told them to take the split or walk away.

Agreed to split the company. LOL LOL LOL

  • No, you do.. I have read very much of the Conrail era and merger. Conrail was failing and looked to CSX to take the company, but since NS ran on most of they're trackage, NS got 60% of the company and 40% to CSX since CSX was more independent. CSX, though did win the bet, but only recieved 40% of the company due to NS using more shared trackage with Conrail than CSX.

  • You may have read it. I was involved in it up to the formation of the joint facilities.

Conrail was absolutely not failing. They were profitable when they were sold which is why the stockholders received amazing prices.

Trackage rights had NOTHING to do with the final division of the assets. Shared trackage is a contractual issue that implies nothing regarding ownership.

NS took what they could and would have taken it all. They weren't being nice. They were forced into it.

  • So, What, you were part of this "merger"? Yes, railroad wise, no.

But what i have seen, its the conrail stock that was why conrail was asking for merger with CSX.

Interesting then, because then the infamous "Pentrex" videos are false of conrail information.. I have read very much into this story and still am skeptical on why Conrail reportedly asked for a merger with CSX.

  • Uh. What? LOL. You have no idea what you're talking about.

This wasn't a merger in any way, shape or form. It was an acquisition.

    Why did Conrail want it?

Simple. Why do you sell any business? MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The stockholders of CR did VERY well in this transaction. No reason for skepticism at all.

They never asked for a merger. CSXT offered to buy them. For a LOT of money. So did NS. So therefor the split so the STB would approve.

  • Fear was a big reason that Conrail was split. NS was under the impression that CSX was bigger then they were. That is true, in overall infrastructure. Financially, NS was through the roof. They had a much better system than CSX and thus the bottom line was better. NS wanted to add Conrail for its size. CSX's big reason for Conrail was the ability to get into the intermodal shipping and chemical markets of the northeast like Jersey and New York. I'm talking about the 1980's merger talks.

  • And Boss302fan is right. In the 1980's they were giving a "yay or nay" situation. Until a political figure (the name escapes me) stepped in and called for a public offering did Conrail escape acquisition.

I find the 1980's Conrail takeover talks more interesting.

  • I'll disagree with you "slightly' here NSHorsehead. I will replace the word "Fear" with "Good business decisions". Neither NS or CSXT could afford to give up the NorthEast entirely to its main competition.

As a result the ultimate winner at that time turned out to be the Conrail stockholders.

  • I used "fear" based on the impression I got from "The Men Who Loved Trains". At least in the 80's that was the feeling. There were a lot of factors though that sparked the talks. The word "monopoly" got thrown around quite a bit too. It was hard for Conrail to call other mergers monopoly even though it was one itself. You have to admit it even if you do love Conrail.

  • OK. I'll concede that the word "fear" has its place here. LOL

  • 604 MOTHERFUCKERZ

  • CN is second??? I always thought is went 1 Union pacific 2 Canadian Pacific 3 Canadian National

oh well, I don't pay attention to that kinda thing anyway. The standard of 1st is going to decrease with the economy.

  • CN is second in....what? Ton miles? Trackage? Profitibility? Revenue? Track miles? What?

You may not pay attention, but those of us who make a living out of doing this certainly do.

Canadian Pacific is #2 at what? LOL. They are number 1 at being subsidized by a government as opposed to the rest of the industry that has to get by without such help.

  • CSXT is subject to the same inspection standards by the FRA as every other railroad in the US and Canada. As with every railroad they have excellent track in some areas (Chicago Division Main) and not so great track in other areas.

  • yes, but there is always dirt about CSX on TV and the news because they do not report deaths and their tracks are substandard, causing one major derailment involving a commuter train ran by Amtrak, It derailed and killed many people. Canadian pacific has well maintained track and pricey locomotives and cars because they used to get funding from the Government. they expand more all the time.

since the economy is in the hole, so is business for all railroads.

  • Dirt about CSXT on TV? So what? TV is in the business of making up dirt about things they know nothing about.

CSXT is required by law to report deaths and injuries and do so. If there is an injury or death on their property, multipe governmental agencies are involved as with any railroad.

Their tracks are not sub-standard and are inspected by the same governmental inspectors who do investigations nationwide.

True, CP is government subsidized. We don't do that in the US. Thank God

  • CSX's Safety Standards are some of the best In America. CSX was reported as the United States 3rd Most RailRoad in Safety. Behind Amtrak And Norfolk Southern Railways. So i dont know where this " low safety standards " came from, but im sure they follow ALL safety guidelines stated by the FRA.

  • if CSX is considered safe, why do i hear constant bashing on csx and bnsf and pro-up?

  • It can be track work, the cars on the train, anything.. Sometimes the track isnt great in 1 spot as to another

  • @Tr2u1ck You hear constant CSXT/BNSF bashing because you listen to uneducated railfans.

There's only one source for the truth and that is actual industry statistics that report on incidents per ton mile or carload handled.

Advice is to completely ignore the few railfans who enjoy trashing roads they do not like and listen to those who work in the industry for a living.

Considering ton miles handled...all railroads in North America are amazingly safe.

  • The reason they seem to run fine on UP & BNSf is probably cause they're much more aware. CSX isnt the problem, its either the crew or the railgang that is in charge of the line. Its not the company itself that is at fault

  • i live in nb

  • theres a joke about global warming and e85 in there somewhere i think so was the crew ok?

  • holy junk dude! i remember my brother threatening me that he was going to throw me in the burning flames! lol

  • What do you mean by that?

  • someone i know says they caused that wreck to happen

  • Do they work on the railroad?

  • Dude thats illegal to cause a wreck..

  • If i was your friend, either i'd shut up about it, or he turns himself in. Once they figure out who did it, the punishments will most likely be severe and probably spend a hefty amount of years in federal Prison

  • @chico8688 Man, tha's nothing to be proud of. Neither you or your friend. People could have died in this. Personally I think he's trying to take credit for something he had nothing to do with so he can try to look cool in front of his dim-witted friends like you.

  • the vid is good but i can't enjoy it, who can enjoy such a destruction

  • Well, you can enjoy the fact that it was put together for all to see. Obviously you watched it for a reason.

  • So don't live too close to the tracks? This is gona happen as long as we NEED trains. They use one tenth the fuel that trucks use.We need them now more than ever.

  • @screaminfiero

a watched many train crash videos but enjoying the destruction was the last thing i thought about

  • Comment removed

  • wow, i know someone that was on that train when it happened!

  • I was only a few hundred yards from the train at the family video across the street when the train derailed and exploded. It was amazing... but the strip club (the horse) right there almost bit the dust... lol

  • Yea, I guess one of the rail workers later found a high heeled shoe by the strip club. The news made a funny about how the strippers were so scared they ran out of their heels, haha.

  • They are all bad, if you know what I mean.

  • Stupid choice of song.. haha.. burn...´ha..

  • New attraction at Universal Studios!

  • very nice shots... a couple of my friends and i went down to see it the day after it happened

we even got our pics in a couple news papers

and apparently some in your video

    hahaha

  • RATM and trains HELL YEAH! great vid man !

  • Its hard to tell what really happened in wrecks such as this because almost everything is destroyed and a lot of crucial parts are in the bottom of the river.

  • From waht the DD reported is that the train was passing through the area at 37mph. The speed limit is 40Mph through here and was rounding the bend here and derailed. how the train derailed, i think is still unknown

  • Hi Koda!

    lol

  • Sorry, I hit post twice.

  • I like how the end tanker looks all new and innocent. That's what happens when you travel 75MPH in a 15MPH zone, your mid-section snaps and piles together. Good thing ethanol isn't explosive, too bad it's flamable. Wow is that bridge melted or what? Crew must have been asleep or drunk from all that ehtanol, hope they were fired. 64R and 68Q make their way by my place, hope this don't happen again.

  • There is no need to disgrace the crews...They were within the speed limit. Neither conductor nor engineer were sleeping or drunk. As a matter of fact, the accident was not caused by the crew at all. The bridge is in perfect condition besides some burn marks and everything has been repaired. Please get your story straight before you start to slander.

  • Thank you for the correction, you are right, I was saying what someone told me...sorry. But do you know the REAL cause, I'm still curious.

  • Just a freak accident. could've been cause by anything.
