  • i see the wobbly corners like it's stabilized with deshaker in virtualdub. am I right ?

  • Nice video! I am interested in buying a new video camera and is considering the Sony VG-10, the VG-20, and the Canon XA-10. I shoot outdoors a lot. Which would you guys recommend?

  • Thanks for all the info Jordan, what kind of audio setup do you have during this video and can you achieve the same setup with the NEX-VG10? Also, is there a plug in with this camera for booming shotgun mics?

  • hi im a skateboarder.

and i will need a fisheye to do my filming.

is this easy to find for this camera?

or will i need converters that will take some of the scale down.

    cheers and very good video..thanks

  • @immitchbiatch Just grab the NEX 16mm F2.8 and add the ECF-1 fisheye converter. Great optics, and then you'll have a nice corrected wide angle as well.

Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

  • @TheCameraStoreTV thanks for your help.

  • @immitchbiatch don't waste your money on this camera buy the canon eos 6D is way better that this sony camcorder

  • @Jigsaw2383 i have a 60d but i still want to get this camera why it have a slightly bigger sensor and have better audio it more built to be a video camera and to get a 60d to act more like a video camera you need to invest to rod system which can bump the cost to more than the nex it self ^_^

  • @ryanyu59 this Sony camera is pretty bad at high iso its so inconstant and shaky blurs all around so the 2 grand is not worth, if you have already the 6D you can add a better mic than the Sony build and also you will have money for a great lens, canon has a tremendous variety and the autofocus.... this sony camera is bad

  • @Jigsaw2383 but its bigger brother shoots at 1080p at 60p its kinda give and take you give away the low light but you gain frame rates and better ergonomics

  • @ryanyu59 The VG20 has better low light than the VG10 or 60D. It also adds manual audio control. It's a very nice upgrade, and we have a video on it.

Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

  • hi. i want to use this camera for skateboard filming. which fisheye lens would be the best for around £400??? thanks a bunch

  • So, this is more a NEX camera with a different body than an actual standalone video camera.

  • Hi Jordan

Do this camera have dual memory slots?

    Thanks

  • @SilatGayongTiger Just one.

Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

  • @TheCameraStoreTV

    Thank you for your reply.

I have trouble deciding between this camera and canon XA10. They both have a same price range. One has a bigger sensor and interchangeable lens and other has a dual slot etc.

What do you recommend? I would like to hear your opinion.

  • does it shoot progressive or interlaced ?

  • @ camera store, how this cam handling lowlight situation coz as we know there is 3 asjust on dslr, low F lense, and speed....can this cam adjust the speed when it needed ?

  • @Aldehyde74 You can adjust ISO, Shutter Speed, and Gain when controlling exposure.

  • @satriaasia it says in the description.....shot with a Sony AX2000

  • Can someone give me a clear answer about the frame rate? I can find on many forums that it's not a good cam for fast pan movements because it shoots only 25p. But in the manual I found on the website of Sony they say: 1080 50i-compatible device MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 1920 × 1080/50i 1440 × 1080/50i

  • @waranimater The PAL version of the camera captures footage at 25P and outputs it to a display as 50i. On your computer, the footage is exported as 25P. It confused us at first as well.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • how would this compare to the canon XA10?? also would this camera be good in filming while in a car and car scenes with rich colors. I'm more interested in this one but would like to know the diff.

  • @JustThatGuy716 also how good is the motion stabilization, all i want to do it edit it on my mac and things like this

  • I'm officially in love with this camera. Price is the problem though...

  • Does anyone know if this would be good for filming skateboarding???

  • Does anyone know if this would be good for filming skateboarding???

  • @woznie835 Absolutely. Just make sure you either A) prefocus your shots or B) have the appropriate depth of field. This camera can give you a very different look from the endless fisheye shots with huge depth of field. Do something different and awesome!

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • Huge sensor that's actually bigger than a Canon 7D, however Sony doesn't take advantage of that big sensor by offering 24p or even 30p shooting. Only giving you 60i gives this camera a standard 'video' look that is amateurish compared to the Canon DSLR's or the Panasonic GH2. And you can get a 7D w/kit lens for the same price and a GH2 for cheaper. Plus, the Canon is considered one of the best still DSLR's out there.

Buy a Canon 7D or a Panasonic GH2 if you're serious about image quality.

  • would this be a good camera for shooting action sports videos?

  • Ya lets just through lenses around!

  • @mariuspurcaru It uses SD cards, or Sony MS Pro Duo cards.

  • Such a great product. While DSLR videography gives us the advantage of achieving that dramatic film look with shallow d.o.f., noise tolerance in low light, lens options etc, etc, there's also the down side of the washed out and blurry looking videos. It can be said that they are no different for the NEX-VG10. The biggest concern of them all should be the rolling shutter issue which skews the captured footage when we do a pan. Does the VG10 face the same problem of skewed image?

  • @Dorkmatix There is quite a bit of rolling shutter, as this camera uses the exact same sensor as the NEX still cameras. If you are looking for a camera that gives you all the advantages of DSLR video, but with less rolling shutter, check out my new favourite camcorder, the Panasonic AF100.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • @TheCameraStoreTV Great! Thanks :)

  • Would you recommend this camcorder as a jump start into the music video industry, and quite possibly shooting stills for stop motion animation?

  • @87kroker Absolutely. It gives you a great cinematic look for music videos, and the stills are DSLR quality for your stop motion.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • Great Cammera.. Great Demo !! My only problem so far is that I notice it smells hot after about 30 minutes of use. Great video quality though. Check out my page. The "Land Before Time" music video is my first production with this cammera. It's done with green screen. Let me know what you think.

  • can it auto focus by its self

  • @popnationcrew Yes, it supports AF.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • im thinking of buying a VG10 but im confused about something.as ive searched through the net, some only specs info, some review videos etc but they always say 1 thing differently about this camera and its an important thing for me.

Can VG10 shoot in 50/60 FPS?not 50i / 60i ,50/60P. I need to shoot at high frame rates for my short films so i can achieve good slow motion with it.

  • @udontseethetruth The VG10 only outputs a 60i signal from 30P capture. If you are looking for a camera that supports overcranking, check out the Panasonic AF100, or the Canon DSLRs.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV Which Canon DSLRs to be precise?60D perhaps?

    thx in advance

  • Comment removed

  • Does this camera output exclusively in 1080-60i or can it output 30p as well?

  • Comment removed

  • can this camera do 60p

  • @thecamerastoretv what camera did you use to film this?

  • Would you consider this camera over thee Canon XA10 for proffesional filming?

  • @jayskillsdrumbum Depends on the look you want. I love the shallow depth of field only a big sensor can give you, but the XA10 has better audio inputs and 24P.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • on another video the sony lady said it is interalaced. does it shoot in 24p? or the cinema mode?

  • @TheShootTruth10 The camera shoots a 30P signal, output as 60i. There is no 24P mode, unfortunately.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • @TheCameraStoreTV I just cant figure out which one I want to get. thanks man.

  • @FutureTVLAND Yes, After Effects supports the AVCHD codec.

  • very sexy camera. godamn a very sexy camera.

and the video quality... man oh man! im in love... but I have a MAC COMPUTER! and I heard these types of cameras are nightmarish to use with Macs. hopefully there is very converting software out there that i can use with this on my Mac. but that definitely won't stop me from purchasing this sexy thing. man im in love folks

  • @kitches1991 The VG10 works great with Macs. iMovie and Final Cut both support the files. I edited this video with Final Cut. I'm a Mac junky, so if we look at a camera, it's guaranteed to be Mac compatible.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • I tried it at the Sony Style Store and I found the handle awkward but I guess it's okay since it's so compact.

    No ND Filers thoguh...

  • With the Sony a NEX mount adapter, can you used different lenses from other brand such as nikon, canon & panasonic?

  • @jrperida The Sony adaptor only allows use of the Sony Alpha or Minolta AF lenses. However, Novoflex produce adaptors for Nikon, Pentax, Leica R&M, and Canon FD lenses. These will not have autofocus, but still work great.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • You bring the message in a good way!

  • How long can you record a video with that battery what you get with it?And how long can you film if you are using 8gb memory stick?

    THX for answering.

  • @keram1233 The battery should last about 2 hours. An 8GB card will get you about 48 minutes of recording at the highest quality.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV

Last question. Can you plug into the camera a portable hard drive?

  • @keram1233 Unfortunately, AVCHD cannot stream into an external drive.

  • this camcorder stinks, I would rather use the XA10 or the XF100 instead of this unless I have the 60D or the 5D Mark II or the 1D Mark IV

  • Comment removed

  • does this camera shoot in 24p also?

  • @RevelationsPro No, no 24P mode. We'll have to see what Sony has up its sleeve for NAB next month.

  • Are there any other camcorders in the market from canon or lumix etc, with simliar capabilities ?

  • @journeytoamillion Canon currently does not have a large sensor camcorder, you would have to grab a video enabled DSLR to get similar results. Panasonic has the GH2 camera with similar capabilities, and the AG-AF100 camcorder as well. The Lumix GH2 is still camera styled camera, while the AF100 is more pro camcorder styled, but a lot more money.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • Does this camera have internal flash / infrared ?

  • @journeytoamillion Unfortunately, neither are included.

  • Canon, please make this camera. Though, make it true 1080p and not that 1080i bullcrap.

  • @charvelgtrs It is 30p video wrapped in a 1080i container file, so it isn't interlaced, if that's your main concern.

  • Do you know of any good fisheyes for this camera that dont need a adapter? And i know of Sony VCLECF1 Fisheye Conversion Lens but i dont know if you need a adapter.

  • @bmx21100 The Sony VCLECF1 is your best bet right now for a fisheye. You just mount it onto the 16mm lens, no adaptor required. It bayonet mounts and focuses very well.

  • could you tell me the cons about this camera. what makes it not considered a professional camera?

  • @bushkiller12 In terms of image quality, the VG10 compares very well with professional cameras. However, it does not have an XLR port for professional audio, a peaking or magnification function for checking focus, or zebra for checking exposure. The AVCHD codec is also not the preferred codec for editing and colour correction. However, the lens and sensor combination is very comparable to cameras costing many times the VG10s price.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • @TheCameraStoreTV so in other words....this camera lacks some of the industry top products..but it still is a very good piece of equipment that if done right can be used to make incredible works? and also jw but wht format is the preffered codec for profesional video

  • What about the fact that there is not hard disk memory but a card system allowing only around 10 mins of shooting only ? Why this is not mentioned ? Alot of post production work maybe needed whcih is quite costly...to many questions still to be answered

  • @Obataladance The VG10 shoots to Sd cards. The most common type of card used is a 32GB card which will get you 3 hours of shooting time at the highest quality, certainly better than 10 minutes. No prosumer cameras in this class use a hard disc as the media is less reliable and a larger drain on battery life. The demands of post production on this camera are no greater than those of every camera in its class. I know, I edited this one.

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • @TheCameraStoreTV so in fact you would recommend a camera that uses sd"s instead of internal hdd. im looking into getting a new camera and i am looking to major in filmmaking when i go to college in hopes to become a director, editor, and screenwriter. and i wonder if this would be able to be a great step up from cameras like the jvc everio...but at the same time not as expensive as truly professional cameras

  • Thanks for the information and nice video.

I was wondering whether you think that this camcorder could film dynamic shots like filming aircraft.

    Thanks a lot!

    Takis

  • is it hard to shoot interlacing video?

  • deos it have nightvision

  • @NerfPet Unfortunately, no night vision on the VG10. put a bright prime on though and you can get a full colour picture in next to no light.

  • I see a LOT of wobbling footage on this camera! Not good!

  • i would not stand next to a lake with that beautiful thing!

  • Hurry up and get it in stock! I've ordered and am impatiently waiting for it to come in! :(

  • Would it be a waste of time buying this now? Do you think a new improved version of this camera will come out spring or summer?

  • @IMONEY08 Judging by hwo Sony usually works, Sony will probably come out with a PRO version with PRO features like 24p, XLR mic inputs, Zebras, & such. But with also a few thousand dollars added to the price tag!!

  • @Shaggy72 Dang.. i figured Thanks. I would love 24p and zebra on it though damn.

  • I was wondering, are the video's you shoot with this kind of camera's the same quality of video's shotted with photo camera's with full hd recording, like the Nikon D7000?

  • @TMBofficialschannel I would say that the quality is higher than the D7000, as the VG10 has a higher data rate. The look of the footage is very similar though as both have an identical sized sensor.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV - Haven't you learned to shave yet sonny?

  • Its shoots up to 7 images per second for action photo sequences...can someone please tell me what the other options are for this if there are any other settings. can it shoot as few as 1 image per second? Appreciate your help!

  • @driftingswiftly The continuous drive mode is fixed at 7FPS. Unfortunately, there is currently no reduced drive in continuous mode.

  • Hi. What did you shoot this review with?

  • @satriaasia sony ax2000 :D

  • This just made it to the top of my wish-list!

Just one question. Does it have the rolling shutter problem (jello-effect) that many DSLRs have?

  • @kartug01 Unfortunately, there is some rolling-shutter. It's inherent to all large sensor CMOS based camcorders.

  • does it have waterproof case?

  • @GHETTOMAXBOY Not yet, though apparently Ikelite is working some thing...

  • @TheCameraStoreTV thanks dude... do you think in the future comes out? i mean the waterproof case..

  • Thank for the no nonsense BS that's being spread all over the Net. Needless to say I'm interested in buying one for party and family events. Thanks for the video.

    SBS

  • EXCELLENT!!!! WELL DONE!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • All it's missing is XLR inputs. Then, it would be perfect. : (

  • Does it have a headphone jack to monitor sound while shooting? Does the HDMI out work simultaneously while shooting? Can I view it on an external monitor while shooting? Anyone know of an inexpensive wireless transmitter/receiver unit that could be used if the HDMI works?

  • @TheCameraStoreTV At 2:18, we see a sequence shot with the NEX VG10... but it has this jello effect, is this always happening? Is is because of the stabilization?

  • I would like to point out that the manual for the Sony NEX-VG10 specifically states that you should NOT hold the camera by the viewfinder / mic. It is not designed to be a handle.

  • Nice review, got me interested. Wondering if you could help me decide though. I'm looking forward to starting a basic home based video studio in a room 25' L x 12' W x 8' H. Trying to install 3 cameras on stand and with lights. The purpose is to start a basic talk show. What cameras/equipment do you recommend?

  • is it natural for the video to snap or freeze a little bit when you make sudden movements, as in a sudden rotation of the camera, or a quick zoom of the lens? I had the same problem when playing around with mine.

  • I think I'll wait for canons take on these hybrid vid cams

  • How does this compare to something with a 3CCD?

  • WOW!

This camera is GORGEOUS! I think I'm gonna buy it soon!

  • 02:19 Did you stabilize this clip via software ? I see the perspective changing as when you deshaker it

02:58 chromatic abberration on the left, what lens is that please?

    NIce review thanks

  • Hi, I have a couple of questions. I'm thinking about getting this camera but I'm wondering if I would have to upgrade my PC as well to handle all the video editing and what not. What minimum requirements would you suggest me to have in relation to processor speed and available RAM? Also, as for transferring video from the camera to the PC, is it transferred via a standard USB cable or is an HDMI style for transfer required for maximum quality? Thank you. I hope you get back to me.

  • @SignalNeverFades I don't know about Windows, we edit on Macs, but I use a dual core 2.66 GHZ Macbook Pro with 4 GB of Ram and it was no problem. Files are transferred by USB or a card reader.

  • How fast is the zoom speed?

  • @OssimJohn As fast as you can turn the zoom ring on the lens.

  • @OssimJohn you turn the lens to zoom in.

  • What do you think will be added to the second version of this camera? And will the price on this drop anytime soon?

  • @RyanSomelofske There has been a pro version announced, with no pricing, model number or release date. It will include variable framerates, larger LCD, and XLR inputs. It would also not surprise me if it recieved the A55's sensor. However, it will probably be quite a bit more expensive.

I think the VG10 price will stay pretty steady, remember that it includes an $800 lens in the package. I may be wrong but if there were no price drops for Christmas, I can't see any on the way shortly after.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV Is the pro version you're talking about the 35mm NXCAM? Because isn't that a completely separate product in the NXCAM line made more for Indie film makers? I was wondering more about an incremental update perhaps with built-in light gun/ Nightvision that was still made for a budding collegiate level filmmaker.

  • @RyanSomelofske I can't see a direct VG10 replacement happening in the next year, maybe 2012.

  • Comment removed

  • This is a great camera. It's a good competition for the SLR cameras.

  • Would this be and idle camera for someone who's wanting to make simple short films? I'm barely starting to learn about film from the classes I'm taking and I plan on continuing my film studies. I don't know enough about film to get a more professional camera, but for now I wanna try to get my hands on a camera to get me started on making my first short film. Would this be a good camera or should I stick with a common camcorder until I get more knowledge about film?

  • @rubenreyes89 I'd go for the VG10 now if you want to make films. The camera still has a great full automatic mode, but the big sensor will give you cinematic shallow depth of field that will instantly add production value to your films. Also, you will really be able to see the difference from different apertures as far as depth of field. I wish I had a camera like this available when I first started shooting films...

    Jordan @ The Camera Store

  • So if it has the same sensor as the NEX3 and 5, does that mean the NEX5 will have the same quality video? I understand the NEX-3 is only 720p, but the NEX-5 is 1080p, so I'm guessing it has the same quality?

  • @moviesunrated Very similar, though the VG10 shoots at a higher data rate for better looking motion (24 mbps vs 17), and offers you full manual control to better dictate how the shot will look.

  • I was very surprised with the nice quality video that this camera shot! I'm in high school right now and want to be in the film business later on. I'm saving for a good camera and honestly, would you recommend this to somebody serious about filmmaking? Thanks!

  • its all nice but ITS 2K

  • ok two questions does it record in 24p and where did you get the deadcat sock?

  • @Mrpinknblackballs No 24P support, unfortunately. The dead cat windscreen is included with the camera.

  • Please explain more about the Recording Rate on this consumer camcorder. I've been doing my research based on the Information of the Manufacturer and they have listed that the recording rates are 1920 x 1080/60i (24Mbps FX,17Mbps FH modes)1440 x 1080/60i (9 Mbps HQ mode). I'm sure with editing software like Premiere or Final Cut can down convert it to 24p but its a extra step that you shouldn't have to do. It would be better to select what frame rate before taking it to production.

  • @dripmode Absolutely. It is preferable to have native 24P if that is the final framerate you want for your project. Some 24P converters work quite well, but the motion will never have that true 'film' look you can get with a native 24P imager. Hopefully, we'll see native 24P in the next version.

  • What camera did you use to record this review?

  • @zer0pixel Sony AX2000

  • @TheCameraStoreTV

Is video quality and sharpness on the nex-vg10 as good or better than the AX2000?

    super review!

  • @hanjohnson1 It uses the same compression, so quality will be very similar. You can resolve sharper images with a good lens with the VG10 though.

  • I'm new to lenses. My question is, is there a lens available that gives you the same flat DOF that a cheaper camcorder like the Panasonic TM700 does? Because I need that most of the time.

  • @Sugartalker Wide angle lenses will give you larger DOF than telephotos. The DOF on the 16mm lens is quite wide at most apertures.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV Thank you. I would like your opinion. I am planning on buying the Panasonic TM700 but this Sony is really making me think twice because I'm thinking that the low light quality is better on this Sony because of the large sensor. On the other hand, the TM700 has more manual features. What do you think??

  • @Sugartalker With an equivalent lens the Sony is indeed better in low light. I think deciding between the two cameras comes down to the look you prefer. The VG10 gives you a very cinematic, shallow depth of field, while the Panasonic shoots a more conventional "video" look with everything generally in focus.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV SoI was all set to buy the NEX-VG10 because dispite the reviews, the Panasonic TM700 produces more low light noise than I am willing to put up with and that fan noise issue, wow. Anyway, the NEX-VG10 is awesome but then I found out that the LCD screen does not swivel forward. lol, sometimes I would like to be a fly on the wall at the meetings when they design these "Handy"cams. More and more I'm thinking about moving up to the pro cameras. Thank you for your help.

  • would this camcorder take excellent HD video of sports, like basketball, baseball, football, etc. without the motion blur?

  • I disagree with the videographer comment. I'm an independent filmmaker and have done cinematography and believe this camera is perfect for us indy folks. I mean look what's out there, you have the RED(a $17,000 plus camera, what indy filmmaker can afford this? Even to rent it is like $4,000 a day). This camera does the trick by the looks of it, and for half the price of the RED, I'm SOLD on this camera it has everything as an independent filmmaker needs, mainly price tag.

  • I looked at the Canon XF HD cams online...then I saw their 8k price tags. PASS!! :)

Is the Sony the best choice for a HD cam with interchangeable lenses right now?

Does the Canon HV40 have no compression because it's using tape? (though fixed lens).

I am a complete novice but I want a great HD cam. Don't want to make a mistake picking up the new Sony. Seems like a good cam even though it records in interlace.

  • @AGC828 The Sony is actually the only interchangeable lens camcorder for under $5K. And the quality is excellent. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Tape based cameras are still compressed when they go into your computer, but the quality is excellent. However, now that I've been working with camcorders shooting to SD, I can't ever see myself going back to tape.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV I think i'd rather wait till several manufacturers put out their version of the Sony VG10. Putting out something with better controls so that you can adjust without taking your eye off the VF or LCD. And keeping your hand on the cam.

Plus, I prefer to see what Canon will put out. Allowing us to use their many great EOS DSLR lenses. So in the meantime I think I'll buy one of their cheaper consumer HD cams like the HFS100.

  • why do I see this camera shooting and getting the jello effect but never on something like a 550d or 7d?

  • @AleksandrsLV From my experience the Canon's suffer from equivalent rolling shutter compared to the Sony cameras. The best I have found for Rolling Shutter control is Panasonic.

  • would you recommend this to someone who is new to videography and is wanting to get a good starter camera?

  • @Totes1829 Absolutely. The automatic setting are very reliable, but if you want to go the extra mile, it gives you more creative control than any other camera in its price range.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV cool cool thanks for the response

  • wow very cool, gotta see this in low light up against the 5dmkii.

  • is the 16mm worth it? does it have a large aperture?

  • @thechris44 The 16mm is a great lens. It has a 2.8 aperture, which is quite bright.

  • Nubie ? Why wouldn't a "pro" want to use a cam with the AVCHD codec? Too much compression?

  • @AGC828 Exactly. AVCHD has a maximum rate of 24 MBPS. I like working with the JVC pro cams (35 mbps) or Canon XF cameras (50 mbps).

  • @TheCameraStoreTV Ok gotcha. Guess it wouldn't matter to enthusiasts like me who aren't making a living with it. Will probably pick one up "soon"...

  • @TheCameraStoreTV What about Panasonic's P2HD codec which I believe records in AVC Intra? For example with the HPX170, are you able to get up to 100 mbps?
