This is the first olympics I remember. I was 9 years old. My mother commented that she believed that the guy in the gray suit marching in front of each country's team, carrying the sign bearing its name, was the same guy every time.

olympic march was good during the 60's but when most africans nations join the olympic..the olympic marches turn very ugly..coz africans dont know how to march in a civilized way..
It is really interesting to see this. The athletes march in such an orderly fashion. Now, they parade not march. It is casual and more relaxed nowadays. Quite different!
this was great thanks for posting this, i really enjoyed this. I know muhammad ali (at that time he was cassius clay) was happy to be apart of this moment and went back home with a gold medal.
Does anyone know how to acquire video footage of the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. My father was in the 1960 Olympics and I am trying to find footage of him
That was the first time that the U.S. Olympians marched under our current 50-star flag. BTW, when did Canada switch over to their current flag, but was it slightly before 1976?
Actually, the 50-star flag made it's Olympic debut in Squaw Valley earlier that year after it was unveiled in the fall of 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii were the last two states admitted into the union.
@canman5060 - Johnny Mathis wasn't a sprinter, he was a high jumper and hurdler and his PR was 6'5-1/2"' in 1954. A nice mark, but no where near close enough to qualifying for an Olympics. He tied for 6th in the California State Meet high jump in 1952 with a mark of 6-1/2'
I spotted: AUT AFG BEL BER BRA CAN CZE DEN FIN Formosa: Taiwan forced to parade under this name. Got to review stand and held up sign reading "UNDER PROTEST." FRA GER: Divided, yet marched as one under Olympic flag. JPN UK US
AUT AFG BEL BER BRA CAN CZE DEN FIN China: Republic of China (Taiwan). it is not Peoples' Republic of China (Mainland) FRA GER: Divided, yet marched as one under Olympic flag. JPN UK US
Мои дед....принимал участие в этих играх в Риме!!!!

The US flagbearer was Rafer Johnson--1st African American to carry the flag in the Olympics. He went on to win the decathlon.

The singer Johnny Mathis could have been in the 1960 Summer Olympics if he hasn't discovered his talent in singing.

Who was your father? What country did he represent and in which event did he compete?
Not that I have video myself, but I've watched a number of Olympics films and documentaries. Might have an idea where you'd look anyway.

Extraordinary witness to history! Although born in 1960, I hadn't yet arrived when this was filmed.

Canada's red maple leaf flag became official in 1965...making its Olympic debut at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble and Mexico.

Johnny Mathis could be in this Olympics for 100 m and 200 m field if he did not choose singing as his career.

Great stuff. Is this from a hand-cranked camera? Looks a bit fast, kind of like pre-1930 footage.

Japan being shown here means it's the next host nation (TOKYO OLYMPIAD of '64).
