the awareness of how linguistics can manipulate the mind is critical to problem solving, or at least critical in avoiding believing a claim when one has no business in doing so.
we act on what we believe, so when the appearance reality distinction is deconstructed into the act of experience it tends to have the effect of blurring this line, allowing experience, to find their place within their absolute context of meaning, that is to say the meaning experience had to each individual,
Veering back away from the linguistically questions of manipulations however and from Platonic distinctions of appearance and reality, the entire question of believability can be deconstructed. Belief really are rules for action;
(which is to say that each one of us must account for any and all of our experiences contextually, or absolute meaning) we can then deal more directly with what we are actually experiencing, hence the improbable, the irrelevant, the less useful tend to simply drop out of the equation as thinking becomes more pragmatic and functional.

Im sensing quite a bit of constructionist, Platonic and Kantian philosophical bases here. Im actually moving beyond this, beyond objectivism and into more of a naturalist, or deconstructionist modality of thinking about the world around us. Knowledge of the fallacies pseudorasoning slanders and the like are all extremely useful,
Good video. A little to much "listing".. QualiaSoup makes this more interesting in his vids by adding instructive arrows, colouring etc. But I liked the pictures in this vid - examples are crucial.
Great series. Very fascinating, and intellectual. I am doing the same thing in my series "Why do intelligent people still believe in religion." Mine also attempt to explain why certain psychological mechanisms evolved that religion exploits and uses to spread itself like a virus.
I'm curious as to what you think of claims of clairvoyance or presentience. There are some who say that according to Special Relatvity, it's perfectly reasonable that some people are able to recieve information from a relatively future time. What do you think of this?
Thanks for the question. Even if clairvoyance was possible through Special Relativity, does it mean we should accept it? One of the main problems with the claim is how to test it.
In their book HHow to think about Strange Things," Schick and Vaughn proposed a "Criteria of Adequacy." In addition to testability, the criteria included other elements that should be considered when comparing competing hypotheses.
These include: 1) scope - which predicts the most diverse phenomena? 2) fruitfulness - which makes the most successful novel predictions? 3) conservatism - which fits best with established beliefs? 4) simplicity - which makes the fewest assumptions?
Based on this criteria, I see no reason to accept the claim.
Im going to be doing a video on this after New Year's.
Thanks for taking a point and applying it in a way that everyone can appreciate.
My father is a pastor, and I grew up in church. I remember one particular church that my father had when I was 4 or 5. When I went back 13 years later, I was surprised at how small it was...nothing like I remembered. If it was half the size I thought it was, it'd be twice the size it really was. Our memories and perceptions are definitely fallible.
Pareidolia can be very difficult bias to overcome since it is a hardwired survival instinct, the ability to recognize a predator or prey in spite of camoflage (especially its eyes) can be a matter of life or death. For example, there is a tree stump behind a rock in the woods along my driveway that looks like the outline of a deer laying down. Even though I know what it is and where it is, as often as not when I walk by and see it out of the corner of my eye, I still turn my head and look.
It's amazing to me that people put great stock in prophetic dreams. Not only for the reason you cited in the video, but also because they are able to totally discard the thousands of other dreams they had, which predicted nothing. What good does it do to pay heed to dreams when thousands and thousands of them never seem to lead to anything?
CrazyPills - great job on a highly informative video and your first favorited video by me!
You bring up an excellent point AncientAtheist. Availability error plays a role in almost every paranormal event. We selectively remember the events that confirm our beliefs and ignore the events that don't.
There is a whole conspiracy/religion theory about how that is the face of Satan appearing out of the smoke. There are actually multiple pictures of the towers smoking that are attributed to Satan's demonic influence over the attacks. I'm actually pretty sure that for some Christians, the idea is actually reassuring.

When young I believed my memory to be infallible
Time proved me wrong
I now accept my memories as just my perception of events
As an artist i have impressed my kin by drawing pictures of our childhood days
They say "Yes I remember that place,Thats just how it was"
Yet later when i revisited some of the sites i was humbled at how wrong in detail i was
It seems they also remember impressions and blank out the un-nesesary ugly bits

Raptor302,
The song is "My last breath" by evanescence. I've actually used three evanescence songs on the three videos in this series. Could this be a bias? :-)

I thought that band sounded familar. A subconscious bias maybe, yes. But not bad in the slightest.
