I always felt that the anti-Prop 8 campaign concentrated a little too much on the negative. But this PSA was perfect because it focused on the actual goal, which is obtaining equal rights. I love it. Oh, and Lucy's short hair looks nice.

If we have something great here in Spain, it is the fact that we, gay people, can get married with the person we love having the same rights as heterosexual people. Is not being able to throw a Wedding really accurate? We can still throw a wedding or a commitment ceremony or whatever and call ourselves married, not being able to get a certain kind of license doesn't mean we don't have free speech or freedom to throw private gatherings. Right?

While this is true, the whole point is the legal rights that are involved in civil marriage. We can throw all the celebrations we want, but it still doesn't give me the legal right to visit my partner in the hospital without her parents' consent should something happen to her. A legal, civil marriage guarantees these things for the two people involved in the legal contract. So while a commitment ceremony is meaningful to us, it means nothing to the state, which has the power over us.

Hmm. I think there's a place for both types of advertising. Have you seen the Courage Campaign's ads where the Mormon "enforcement division" arrives. "We've come to take away your rights." It was brilliant!

But simple non-specific statements about "supporting equality" also have their place. They appeal to different people.
