It was a shame that Eight Bells died on that track. It was truly a depressing day after hearing about it. If I could go back in time I would save every horse that died on that track. Sadly nobody has the power to go back and change things. She will always be remembered. Never let her spirit die.

Thats mean! they didn't ave to kill her! they could of fixed her, sold her and she would still be alive living a happy life as a pet to some little girl or boy and she would be love!

ive done a lot of research in books and on the internet. and her legs could've been put in casts. but she would have had to wear a padded harness around her torso to suspened her in the air to keep pressure off of her legs so that they would heal. even after they healed she would have had to gone through like years of theraputic training to get her legs strong enough again. its just better to put them down so that they don't have to go through pain.
i agree with you dont get me wrong. but i mean think of it as one of your closest pets.. would you rather them go to heaven where this is no pain or stay here on earth and suffer? think about that. Im not being rude so please please dont take it that way.

u have no clue theese were good people who ran her in the derby cuz of her talent and thought she could win yes there was money involved but they did not race her solely on that reason and no good respectable trainer or owner wants to see their horse breack down n u kno why she broke down cuz comming off the pace she clipped heels which she had a habit of doing and you can obviously see the outcome!!!

I am a horse butcher and I butcher a horse a day in my horse butcher shop. I wish more people would eat my horseburgers. And yes, they brought Eight Belles to me and we had a great meal and made a lot of horseburgers a la Eight Belles. Good meat, pure muscle, low fat.

I admit I knew nothing about Eight Belles before the hype leading up to the Derby. (It's usually the only race I watch every year.) But as I started learning about her, I fell in love. (Girls rule, boys drool!) She was a beautiful girl, & even more so when she was doing what she appeared to love...racing. I'm sure the sport needs some "fixing"; what sport doesn't? All in all, I think it was just an unfortunate tragedy. My compliments on your tribute; my condolences to Eight Belles' "family".

It is funny to me that you dont like rodeo yet you do support the race horse industry.. An industry that sends its champions to slaughter, an industry that runs horses so hard that the animals can hardly walk by the time they are 6, an industry where young horses such as eight belles and Barboro have there lives cut short all for the love of a dollar.
Things happen. Race horses live pretty good lives compared your usual horse. So many of our horses end up on a dinner table in Europe or Japan. Most of our USA wild "mustang horses" are in holding pens awaiting who knows what fate?????? Look it up and you will see. Be a squeacky wheel and give a comment.JMO

I agree, they don't need to ban racing, after all, that is what these horses are bred to do. I personally feel they need to move the starting age back to 3 (at least) and have the triple crown to 4. The horses just aren't done growing. Man, was I rooting for this filly, and she didn't disappoint. She truly was a beautiful horse.
I watched the Derby in joy then shock and devestation with the rest of the country. I truly believe these majestic animals LOVE what they are doing, but we owe it to them to protect them. Why did Ruffian die in a 2-horse race? Y Ruffian? 8 Belles? I do NOT believe horse racing is cruel - but I do believe more can be done to help these magnificent creatures. I 100% agree with what you are saying. Everyone on here is fighting about how to stop or ban racing, but really, the ratio of horses that live to the ones that die in horse racing? We just need to make the sport safer for the horses and jockeys.

"They have DIED for our selfish needs!" They jumped as high as they could for us. They carried us through war. They bring joy to us. Horses deserve respect and admiration. Well there is the most sense I've seen on this thread! She was a horse, bred to race, that was her job. Just like those who cry over animals killed for meat. They were bred for it, and so was this horse.
She was an ATHLETE. Yeah, she was an animal, but we all are. Animals of different species. You know what would happen if our intelligence was taken away? We have no means to hunt or defend ourselves by instinct. We'd be fucked. We don't have claws nor the teeth to be able to take something down ourselves without the means of technology we've created.

Everyone wants to argue but what should be remembered is that a beautiful filly ran her heart out and took second place. She was spectacular & her accident tragic & fatal. She was loved by her owners,trainer, jockey & us watching her.I'm a nurse who owns 2 horses. A retired TB and a Spotted Kentucky Mountain, and both run, jump and play w/o me making them & become excited when ridden and worked. Horses a smart animals and love to please the people they love.
though did yall guys hear including eight belles jockey there was 3 jockies thrown before and after the derby- i believe it was bob black jacks jocky in the tunnel leading to the track Big Browns jockey during the interview after the race that one was hilarious big brown just kicked and his jockey went flying not even a buck *lol* then eight bellees jockey when she fell
I agree thats the only thing wrong with horse racing their raced way to young and ARE NOT strong enough their bones arent developed even TBs bones arent developed till the age of 4-5 especially tbs they normally arent fully developed till 4
I have ridden horses all my life, and in my opinion, they are raced too young. Their bones have not developed enough to take the stress of going at these speeds.
Whipping the horses does little harm when your on top of the horse. The whip is used for encouragement, not pain.
Also, the owners of these horses have the insured for mega bucks! If something happens to these horses, their pockets are lined green.

Horse racing represents all of humanity. There are those who are in it solely for themselves and don't care about anyone else, or anything else... and there are those on the opposite end of the spectrum. To say that there are no owners or trainers out there who don't treat these horses like a family member is just plain ignorant.

I admit I knew nothing about Eight Belles before the hype leading up to the Derby. (It's usually the only race I watch every year.) But as I started learning about her, I fell in love. (Girls rule, boys drool!) She was a beautiful girl, & even more so when she was doing what she appeared to love...racing. I'm sure the sport needs some "fixing"; what sport doesn't? All in all, I think it was just an unfortunate tragedy. My compliments on your tribute; my condolences to Eight Belles' "family".

It is funny to me that you dont like rodeo yet you do support the race horse industry.. Things happen. Race horses live pretty good lives compared your usual horse. So many of our horses end up on a dinner table in Europe or Japan. Most of our USA wild "mustang horses" are in holding pens awaiting who knows what fate?????? Look it up and you will see. Be a squeacky wheel and give a comment.JMO

Many race horses that don't make it on the track end up with a one-way ticket to Mexico or Canada.
Not all are winners or lucky enough to be rescued by organizations such as Canter.

I agree, they don't need to ban racing, after all, that is what these horses are bred to do. I personally feel they need to move the starting age back to 3 (at least) and have the triple crown to 4. The horses just aren't done growing. Man, was I rooting for this filly, and she didn't disappoint. She truly was a beautiful horse.

I watched the Derby in joy then shock and devestation with the rest of the country. I truly believe these majestic animals LOVE what they are doing, but we owe it to them to protect them. Why did Ruffian die in a 2-horse race? Y Ruffian? 8 Belles? I do NOT believe horse racing is cruel - but I do believe more can be done to help these magnificent creatures. Long live the greatest - SECRETARIAT!!!!!

I 100% agree with what you are saying. Everyone on here is fighting about how to stop or ban racing, but really, the ratio of horses that live to the ones that die in horse racing? We just need to make the sport safer for the horses and jockeys.

Horses have served man longer than any other animal in the world. They have a history; a past. They were brought to the New World with us; a symbol of status. They raced their heart out for us. "They have DIED for our selfish needs!" They jumped as high as they could for us. They carried us through war. They bring joy to us. Horses deserve respect and admiration. They don't deserve a fate of being slaughtered or fighting for human entertainment. Respect for all horses

It is sad what happened to Eight Belles, she was a beautiful horse, I got to see here run on thursday before the derby. She was amazing, I was also there at the derby, and what happened was heartbreaking, she will always be remembered in my heart. Rest in Peace Eight Belles <3

If you had ever studied Anthropology and followed the evolution of the "homo" line you would know that. She was an Athlete, and trained as one, and I'm not taking away from the tragedy she suffered BUT ALAS she was just an ANIMAL. Everyone wants to argue but what should be remembered is that a beautiful filly ran her heart out and took second place. She was spectacular & her accident tragic & fatal. She was loved by her owners,trainer, jockey & us watching her.I'm a nurse who owns 2 horses. A retired TB and a Spotted Kentucky Mountain, and both run, jump and play w/o me making them & become excited when ridden and worked. Horses a smart animals and love to please the people they love.

though did yall guys hear including eight belles jockey there was 3 jockies thrown before and after the derby- i believe it was bob black jacks jocky in the tunnel leading to the track Big Browns jockey during the interview after the race that one was hilarious big brown just kicked and his jockey went flying not even a buck *lol* then eight bellees jockey when she fell

I have ridden horses all my life, and in my opinion, they are raced too young. Their bones have not developed enough to take the stress of going at these speeds.
Whipping the horses does little harm when your on top of the horse. The whip is used for encouragement, not pain.
Also, the owners of these horses have the insured for mega bucks! If something happens to these horses, their pockets are lined green.
Racing these babies are cruel and wrong.

The horse racing industry pumps these beautiful beasts full of steroids.
Why not have congress hold some hearings about this? Lord knows there's nothing else going on in this country that they should be concerned with. Right? Steroids obviously trump wars, torture, wire tapping, habeas corpus, outing CIA agents, and a whole slew of other government misdeeds.
Horse racing is about making a profit and weilding control. End of story.

God (if there is such a thing which all logic suggests there is not) had never intended for us to care more about animals than humans. read the bible, how great were animals treated back in their time? were they not used for the purposes of man rather than their natural purposes? Horse racing represents all of humanity. There are those who are in it solely for themselves and don't care about anyone else, or anything else... and there are those on the opposite end of the spectrum. To say that there are no owners or trainers out there who don't treat these horses like a family member is just plain ignorant.
