Hollywood526, man, what's you problem? Tight work, maybe too tight! Clean licks always pay the bills. The jazz bass sounds incredible. I've just recieved my Ad. pre-amp. had to git it. Putting it into my "Squire Active Five". Think i'm going to change the pickups to Bartolini's. Will post a video when the work is complete. Having the work done @ G-spot basses here in Hollywood, Fl. See you soon...God Bless! JUS2DAY
that preamp you put in that bass sounds sick. I have a fender american standard jazz (passive). Would i be able to install this preamp into my bass even though mines passive?
Its the best cover version of Marcus Miller vintage number "Run for Cover". "hollywood526": - You really make this Thriller Miller sound on your "own special way", you've got talent, funky brother.
Killer tone man. I cant say that the Fender sounds better than your KSD, it just sounds different. Both basses is tone city. I believe Marcus himself would love to check both of your vids out. Peace.....
hey Brother!! some question. I have one mexican fender 4 strings and I want to change the preamp, but I have no idea wish one to choose. what about audere they are good? with this preamp its going to sound better?
Hey cool tone! it growls big man, i think it's also the blockinlay that makes the sound i heard it from a cool dutch bassplayer. keep up the good work
Dude, I promise one of my favorite parts is from 1:53-1:55. Well, to be honest, I'd have to quote this whole song but I'm kind of tired at the moment but just the way that sounds. Like I can literally feel my own strings from my bass playing those notes. I mean just those 9 notes from 1:53 to 1:55, like RIGHT before it goes to the chorus. Bah-doum chee-dip bowm-dooooo booom boom boom!!!! I cannot get that out of my head for nothing. Keep it up Hollywood. You're a great inspiration dude!!!
Oi, he's right, I play a 78, it's passive and has a very low output (not the best year for Fender), but has amazing tone. Marcus Miller custom 5 string has two 9 volt batteries and a HOT signal. You need a good preamp to get that kind of punch out of that bass.
Yo bro...this song/version sounds HOT!!! I love your playing man!!! I agree...play with PASSION!!!!! I would love to get that sound track...to practice it like how you are playing it man!!!! Both basses sound hot...the fender and the smith...!!!
I've got the British vertion of ur pre-amp (john East j-retro) in my US Jazz Bass its pretty much the same, so what eq did u set ur pre-amp to make it sound so amazing?!??!?!?
Mang mint job on that amazing tone and everything, But I got a question : ) would you be able to tell me where you got your backing track Thanks : ) keep up the playing also another question, How long have you been playing for? Merry Christmas
I just finished installing the Audere pre-amp and I couldn't be happier with the sound. Thanks for the post. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.
Been playing Ken Smiths for the last 20 years, but you've got me hooked on the Jazz Bass sound. I'm gong to order the Audere electronics and drop them in my Squire Jazz..hope it sounds half as good as yours.
Hey David, I was just wondering...since your bass was made passive and it doesn't have the battery compartment you would find on basses built active do you find it a serious inconvenience to screw out the preamp section every time you change your batteries? Great stuff btw! You got me diggin the jazz bass sound :D
When I did the video I had a mixed set of strings, popped a G string and replaced it and the same thing with the A string, and they were old at the video time. A lot of the tone is coming from the bass, Audere preamp and Trace Elliot EQ. Strings are also very important. Currently I use SR 2000 med light on several of my basses.
I started playing somewhere around 14 yrs. old. I had a period that I stopped playind for a few years due to a serious case carpal tunnel. I'm back at it with very limited incidents of carpal.
Hey mate... great playing! Where can I get the recorded version of this song? I always play it but only from the live videos on youtube... Ive been looking for it for such a long time... thanks a lot and keep playing!!
So, you did the JZ3 mod? Are they the same original pickups. I want to the same preamp upgrade to my 2008 USA Jazz Bass, but would it sound the same as yours? how about if I also install the "Custom Shop 1960 pickups", would it make any difference adding the pickups upgrade?
I did the mods, also changed the pickups to Fender Cobalt Noiseless. No change in tone, only quieter. Probably won't sound like my bass, that is due to the wood character being the major factor in determining the overall tone delivered by the instrument. That is not to say that pickups or preamps will not enhance the sound of the instrument, they absolutely help. Some people like passive tones opposed to active. These are my thoughts and someone else may have different view. I say go for it!!!
Hey Richie, I will do something soon, just been really busy and I want the next video to have audio directly from my mixing console. Still waiting for a vid from you with some audio...Stay tuned
The sound in the video is being picked up directly from my Canon camcorder. The sound coming from my bass is produced through my Trace Elliot GP 12 SMX bass amp. I tweaked the EQ, and used a mild compression setting on the Trace Elliot head. That's ! I can get that sound fairly easily through any resonable sounding amp, thanks to the Audere Audio JZ3 preamp. I hope this response helps. AQlways Play with Passion!!!
Audere should show this video as a comercial for the JZ3!!! Amazing sound man. I want to know if there is any pedal, EQ, or mastering that colours the final sound of your '78 Jazz Bass in the video. Do you think the Mics that you have., makes big part of the work? Sorry about my english, I'm workin' on! I will thank u a quick review.
Hey Jwuonog, the preamp is an Audere Audere JZ3 configuration. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I hope this information helps! Play with Passion!!!
nice. I just got a JZ3 with Vol/Vol/Treble-Bass stack. It sounds pretty good. They went in a cheap SX bass. I can almost cop the same sounds as my Marcus bass. What kinda pickups are you using?
Hey J, I also have 2 SX Jazz Basses with Audere preamp system and they both went sound great after the mods. I have Fender Cobalt Noiseless Pickups on the 78 Fender Jazz Bass. I dropped a set of Seymour Duncan Bassline PU's in one of the SX's. That one really sounds great.
I also prefer the Fender Jazz video cover over the KSD vid, I love that Fender and Audere combo growl! Hopefully I will get some time to post some more vids soon!
How in the *#@#@ could you say he's out of tune!!! You probly can't even play!! Quit being a hater even IF you weren't hating you could have save that stupid coment!!!!!
It was a little out of tune, I didn't say he sucks though! I play 5 instruments and electric/upright professionally along with electric guitar professionally. So yes I do know what I am talking about.
Man! I keep coming back to this video and yet I can't get enough of it.I have heard the KSD version and this bass sounds better for me.Man keep groooving. Now I get, playing slap bass is like how you handle your lady in bed.Show some love and respect but bang it hard til it makes the sound you want to hear, groving at the same time.ha ha ha.Man keep up the good job.I am looking forward to your next vid.
The left thumb position at the end of the neck just happens to be the most comfortable position for me to play. The location varies from one bass to another depending on the bass's physical design, on my Yamaha TRB 1005L, I use my thumb around the 22nd fret due to a longer scaled neck. Basically, it all about what is comfortable for you as opposed to any technical advantage. I hope this helps!
That helps imensly, but i am an idiot.....I'm sorry, I meant your right thumb, but that helps out a lot regarding the comments on your left thumb..i think i got it mixed up because you are a "lefty" bass player
OUTSANDING!!! i was tapping both of my feet watching you tap both of yours! you kept the energy up the whole time! great jam! i agree marcus would enjoy that rendition!
dude !!! u rocked the shit out of that song. Marcus Miller would go wild if he heard you play it like that. love your grove and the bass sound . audere could use for thier marketing.
The amp is a Trace Elliot GP 12 SMX Pre Amp w/ built in amp. The Bass preamp is an Audere Audio JZ3 Vol, Mid/Bal, Treble/Bass configuration. The Bass is a 77-78 Fender Jazz U.S.A. Ash body, Maple Neck and Fretboard w/ Pearloid Block Inlays.
My Negroe you are one damm amazing player, I love your tone and your jazz bass in the back with the maple body ala Marcus Miller is Phenomenal. Keep it up. Love those phuncky licks.
OMG!!! DA SHIZZNIT!!! I have an Audere JZ3 on the way for my 70's Jazz Right now, i already updated to the SCN pickups about 3-weeks ago, can't wait to hear how it sounds!!! ;0)
hey man, u said ages ago that u upgraded our preamp wit audere jz3, did you also upgrade your pick-up's? and how much did it all cost you because im thinking of putting on my 2006 fender highway jazz bass
Hey Dubb, yes I also swapped out the original fender pickups and replaced them with Fender Cobalt Noiseless Pickups. The mods cost approx. $325.00 and I'm still satisfied! Peace! Play with Passion!
I've been lookin for a 4 string bass capable of producing sound to that, ofcourse with the hands of a person like you.Any pickup modification on this bass ?
Yes Sir' the pickups were modified with Fender Cobalt Noiseless Pickups. They did not change the bass tone at all which was a great thing, they were installed to decrease the noise level only! I have also installed an Audere Audio JZ3 Preamp' which really pushes the natural bass tone to the limit!
Hollywood526, man, what's you problem? Tight work, maybe too tight! Clean licks always pay the bills. The jazz bass sounds incredible. I've just recieved my Ad. pre-amp. had to git it. its interesting to hear the difference in tone from the KSD to the vintage fender, the fenders got such a badass slap tone, vicious,
not nearly enough videos of this quality on youtube,
straight badass
boonokian 3 years ago
straight badass indeed, but you still can't beat the good ol' musicman stingray. the humbucker sound just rules.

hey man, u said ages ago that u upgraded our preamp wit audere jz3, did you also upgrade your pick-up's? and how much did it all cost you because im thinking of putting on my 2006 fender highway jazz bass
DUBXXX 3 years ago
Hey Dubb, yes I also swapped out the original fender pickups and replaced them with Fender Cobalt Noiseless Pickups. The mods cost approx. $325.00 and I'm still satisfied! Peace! Play with Passion!

I've been lookin for a 4 string bass capable of producing sound to that, ofcourse with the hands of a person like you.Any pickup modification on this bass ?
theethioman 3 years ago
Yes Sir' the pickups were modified with Fender Cobalt Noiseless Pickups. They did not change the bass tone at all which was a great thing, they were installed to decrease the noise level only! I have also installed an Audere Audio JZ3 Preamp' which really pushes the natural bass tone to the limit!
