  • If you describe BILLY as a comedian he immediately changes into a musician - if you say he's a musician - he changes into an actor - if you say OK so he's an actor - he changes back into what he really is....a human being like the rest of us - but GREAT!

  • This looks like the show Billy played at the Apollo Theatre in Victoria, London around the mid 70's. I was there with my wife and the show was terrific with the best mouth organist I've ever heard and a magnificent finale from Billy.

Not only a good musician but the best comedian I've ever seen live and a guid wee boy. Thanks for the video.

  • this video actually made me buy a banjo and learn how to play it.

    Is that sad or what?

  • I tried doing banjo 20 years ago. It is a brutal Mistress. I am looking into a getting a Mandolin now. Its a shorter fretboard.

  • strings are strings, you get used to it, the clawhammer style of the banjo was what I had a hard time picking up.

if you can play one stinged instrument, you can play them all with a little practice, doesn't mean you'll be great but you can get good.

  • @rrtodd95

the banjo is like my 2nd fav instrument (cello<3)

  • does anyone know who does this song originally...i know this is not the same as 'the band' 'up on cripple creek' any clues?

  • I was checking around, peirol, and apparently, this song dates back to at least 1921. I see it listed as "traditional", meaning that nobody really knows who wrote it. :)

  • JOBBIE WHEECHA! grew up listenin to the big yin!

  • Billy Connolly is a legend!! Great singer, great banjo player, great comedian! just cant beat the guy =D

  • Absolutely inspiring, my 11 year old has just decided to take up banjo lessons!!:p

  • Funny I can hear his accent. It's a bit light but its there. Listen to a Southerner sing the song and you'll notice the difference.

  • Ooooh, ai, la- di- da, who cares if he didn't sing with his Scottish accent this one time? Have you ever heard him sing anything else? I have, his accent stays, just sit down and applaud how well he plays the banjo, for Christ's sake.

  • This is the first time that I've heard this and as a Bluegrass fan I have to say that this is some fo the best damn banjo pickin' that I've heard! Mr. Connolly, you're a very talented man!

  • fantasticooooo

  • well your not ment to sing with your accent

  • No offense, but i enjoy people singing with an ccent :)

  • he's got loads of funny stuff about his accent and where he's from if you watch some of the other videos

  • Be proud where you from, sing with an accent.

  • That is probably the best banjo playing I've ever heard :D Billy is full of surprises.

  • he lost his accent once he started singing.

  • It's no lost, songs just come out that way.

  • Yeah, there was a study or something done on this a while ago. Regional accents are less pronounced in song.

  • He's so young there! XD I'm used to seeing him with grey hair all the time. Fucking brilliant banjo playing

  • ho, tight playing. fuckin awesome xD

  • tight

  • Billy with Donner and The Kebabs, f'kin awesome.

  • best version of this song around me thinks, all the others are instrumentals .

  • He was a banjo player before he was a stand-up comedian, he used to tell stories between in banjo playing

  • jasper carrot did the same when he was in a folk band and ended up a comedian

  • Fan-bloody-tastic :o) God the Big Yin kicks ass on the banjo !!! Thanks for putting this on youtube.
