God I hated Jack back at this time. He was such a jerk but Melissa was so naiive and way too trusting. Jack was totally lying and using her because he couldn't have Kayla. I'm just glad that Melissa came around later that gave me a new respect for her character.

What was the investigation that Jack was doing for Melissa?

They were trying to find out who poisoned Kayla. Melissa was framed by Harper, Jack's adopted father. Harper poisoned Kayla when he thought she found out Jack was adopted and was really a Johnson.
