  • @PetercAW

that's the fundamental difference between a movie and a game and actually the reason why I think a movie about a game wouldn't be a good movie. movies heavily rely on characters, and not so much on incidents or actions. for a good movie, you just need a protagonist and their personality is very important for the audience being able to empathize with said protagonist.

  • @Flacksh0t

the Purchase Brothers are extremely talented, their CG and compositing is top notch. overall it's great action, but unfortunately good action isn't enough to make a good movie. I just doubt there is enough substance in the HL series to make a good full-length movie. If they also manage to write a good story with strong characters then we will see a great HL movie.

  • Nice man this is awesome.

That warehouse looks kinda like the warehouse from the colony

  • It got pixelated towards the end but great job! if you fix that, you should really do another one! get a friend to help and, y'know, do, like, Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2 EP1 and all that. You're great at this!

  • i agree with most people on the subject of the (hopefully coming) half life movie, because how would they do freeman...he never talks,he cant do any moaning like pain cuz no1 knos his voice..trust me i want a hl movie more than anything..but i doubt it.

  • he forgot striders cant look up very well, i mean why would they do with that lenght?

p.s.: HE KILLED HIS LITTLE BROTHER!

  • Cool video.Where is the subscribe button?

  • Scanners kinda remind me of sentinels from halo

  • your cool man

  • exelent!

  • plus what would gordon say he hs no lines !!!!! in the game

  • Excellent work guys..

  • Didn't really like this version as much. It builds up waaay to slow, or stalls fighting for unusually long periods of time to seemingly show off more CG effects instead of portraying a 'believable story' like the original version did. Plus, despite the scenes and locations being rather accurate and well chosen for a City 17 location. The landscape feels extremely bare for no understandable reason. One would usually run across another citizen or Metro-cop by now, but there's no sign of life.

  • @Slientwolf

thanks for your honest comment, I value every opinion. however, I'd like to point out that this was done as part of my thesis about post-production, so one of the main purposes was to show off CG effects.

I intentionally didn't show that many signs of life to create an eerie, barren and nightmarish kind of feeling, but I understand that not everyone might like this and would have liked to see more of HL2's creatures ;)

  • What a brilliant short film you have put together, the acting and th editing was top notch.

You guys should be proud of the amount of effort you have put in.

    Well done

  • that music wwhen the strider comes is my fav music in hl2

  • i think, they should make a real full-length movie from this game. maybe, as we really don't know much about gordons character, the movie should be first-person. that would be interesting, i think xD

  • @R3DV1RUS

I'd love to do a full-lenght movie, however, I don't think it is a great idea to show the whole movie in a first-person view. good movies are usually character-based; I guess if there is a lack of a character which the audience can empathize with, most people would get extremely bored.

  • Ahh ... I remember watching this when you uploaded it first 2005 or so...that was and is awesome! I am from germany so I am happy that you used a german city, hehe. looks really similar to City 17 :)

  • for a movie they should just do some of the survivors points of view

basicaly do half-life blue shift or opposing forces. they did not ruin half-life so yhea

  • Lol. Nice advertisement at 2:06

  • I love the citadel in the middle of some houses! LOL also whats he doin wanderin around aimlessly

  • @MegaGomez01

that's where citadels usually pop up, right in the middle of your backyard. damn combine! ;)

  • Haha! funny 5 stars!

  • I think the bit with the crowbar would have been funnier without the additional reaction shots and without the additional shot showing the crowbar falling.. It was pretty unnecessary, however, overall, wonderful short :D Great composite work.

  • Wow. Really nice film. How many was making this film? If it is just you I am double impressed. Good work.

  • @andersblabla

thanks! I had a friend helping me carry and set up some equipment for half a day and then some others giving me advice during post-production, but during most of the shoot it was just the actor and me. fun times tho.

  • That's why me and my crew of six people are working on a decent storyboard and script before setting out to make a movie which lasts 2 minutes and has no to little effects ;)

If anyone wants to participate, we're still new at 3DSMax. The editing program for the movie we use will be most likely AE since at least two of us have basic knowledge at it.

  • this looks great lets nit forget that half-life 2 is the best first-person game ever made!!!!!!!!!! and the movie would rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ha I seen Gman in the window at 4:07

  • @HoPKiiNZz92

    lol

  • great work dude !! 5 stars from me and from morocco

  • that is amazing but how is there no people in the city?

  • @flyingcheesestudios

I shot early in the morning when most people were still sleeping. I had to remove an eldery woman in one of the shots tho. why do old people have to get up so early? :(

  • Nice =3

Hehe, the credit song was my favorite from Half-Life 2 :D

  • wow you did so very well on this

  • with an interview with valve they said that they have had many scripts come in for a half life movie, but he said all of them sucked and it would ruin the series. so it doesn't seem like their will ever be one :|

  • I think it's quite difficult to turn a computer game into a full-length movie because computer games are rather about playing than storytelling. most computer games simply lack the substance and strong characters to create a good story. even Half Life, it's a great game, but let's be honest - I found the story to be rather weird and confusing. and what do we know about Gordon Freeman as a character? - actually not much... I also doubt that there will ever be a (decent) half life movie.

  • I agree, but I still think HL is more realistic. You dont get told everything and so thats why your confused, remember if Gordon got told the whole story by someone it would look fake. And anyway, the game is meant to confuse and bewilder people. :P

btw it was a good short film, although the acting could have been slightly better xD

  • funaticfilms , your correct about the difficulty of creating a film from a video game, but Half Life 2's story is very deep and could easily be made into something like a short series and though it may take a lot of work and patience, it could be done well, the problem like you said though is Gordon isn't much of a relatable character since he never speaks, but the storytelling of the plot could be well orchestrated if done right

anyway, wonderful job on the movie! Excellently filmed!

  • I believe that Gordan Freeman is a sarcastically intelligent bad ass, who is scared of commitment ( ALYX) haha. I believe with a great director and cast. It could turn out to be a great movie. At least not a flop like........ Cough.. DOOM.. Cough.

  • The Half-Life continuum is just a collaboration of limitless potential.

  • Nice Job. Great Locations! that building is EPIC!!! the SFX are well done too!

I could see someone making a great scifi movie in the hl2 universe but it would have to be a separate story line with new characters, but i doubt that will actually happen.

  • unless they base it on another person

    like a rebel

  • its a great story line and game probably in the record books but a movie about a mute with a crowbar??? maybe a movie about the incedent

  • @funaticfilms keep in mind it was also a PS2 game

  • @funaticfilms Was that trampy grafiti filled place real or animated? or did you find it as a picture or do you live near it it looks disgusting...

  • @speedythepet

it is real. I was told it was an old ship propeller factory (that's why there are those huge round holes in the ground). at that time I was living and studying near by, not a shabby area tho, it's just an old factory. lots of debris and broken glass everywhere, some water dropping from the ceiling but overall not really disgusting, rather desolate.

  • great movie

  • At aroind 6;57 you can see someones face in the window..

  • HL2 movie...Sounds REALLY GOOD:)

Great editing, and movie, good job!!

  • i didn't get the ending

  • Really like this piece. Short and fairly simplistic, but the shots were well done and I really liked the the modeling. And I like the one liner. Only wished you had posted HQ, but the quality is still there. Keep up the good work.

  • it would be cooler if there were CP or Combine solders in it not just 3 striders and one city scaner

  • Hey thats not bad, nice work man keep it up!

  • awsome ... u should make a zombie movie... desert places are GREAT for this ... :) 5*

  • Awsome vid dude! Great photo manipulation and stuff!

P.S.: What is the soundtrack that starts at about 6:54 ?

  • Nice work.

Was hoping for a click of the mouse on quit and the landscape would then clear up in the background but well done nonetheless.

Life IS what we make it.

  • It was pretty good but ive seen better 4 stars!

  • hey funa I was wonderering did you get the 3d animations from the game or maybe was there some 3d software you used.

    please reply not comment

  • Very good!

  • That was very good buddy :) I wanna do a simmilar movie but i cant find the time.. lol.. very nice motionstracking and 3d modeling.. 5 stars for creativity and an awesome storyline.. loved the ending :) Nice one :) KEPP IT UP

  • thanks! :)

I didn't do the 3D modeling myself tho. I took the models from Valve's Half Life 2 game, their team did the awesome modeling job.

  • you got serious skill man

    5/5

  • at 4:16 awesome PWNAGE

  • good jop mean:D Great

  • A few Overwatch sound effects wouldve added a touch of realism.

  • good job :)

  • Wow :) Nice one .. grtz from Poland !

  • This was a pretty awesome film! Awesome job!

  • Hey!

So inspiering to see this. One question; How did u make the car door open at 5:34?

    keep it up!

  • the car is CG. I've animated the door. ;)

  • wow that had 2 be the best city 17 movie thingy ive seen!

  • Has the quality of the video decreased drastically when you uploaded to youtube? Because im considering getting the xl1, but want to make sure the video quality is up to par.

    phenominal film by the way!

  • thanks for the nice comment.

the XL1 is a great camera, but when you upload any footage to youtube, it will be compressed upon upload and thus decrease quality of course. that does not have anything to do with the camera, its just the way the video data is stored and played back on the youtube servers. your raw camera footage will always be of better quality than what you will see on youtube.

  • nice dude...

  • how did you get the city empty? is that real or did you use some kind of software to make the city empty? if so what did you use?

  • I shot it early in the morning so there weren't that many people around. only in a few takes you could see some people in frame, but I simply removed them with Adobe After Effects.

  • 2 oscars!

    oscar1 = 1000000000000000000/5

    oscar2=1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/5

  • god i wish i had a place like that to be able to film on

  • im not sure if thats just greenscreened buildings, but it still looks real and i wish i was that good(just learning this kind of stuff)

  • no, its a real city, no green screen was used at all. I 3D-motion-tracked the footage and added the CG. there was no need to key anything as I could use some simple track mattes to composite the CG and the live action footage.

  • you need to out beat the purchase brothers with a full 8-9 minute film.

You could easily do it to because the one thing the Brothers lacked, was a story for the characters, bad acting, and bad editing.

  • Everything seems so slow. It forever just to kill that damn flying camera thingmabob. Just going around in circles for 20 seconds iwas like kill the damn thing already. Good job though.

  • when I played this game it took me forever to kill my first camera thingmabob (combine scanner) with just a crowbar. he was actually quite fast. :p

  • @funaticfilms i killed my first scanner with a paint can on the roof of the apartment building. :D

  • very good :D

  • Wow ummm how must I say this? The cg was good and all. But ummmm the scanner scene took up half the video. What's good about that? Add some combine and some shooting and you have yourself a good video.

  • I know, I also wanted to add Edward Norton as Gordon Freeman but my budget was a bit limited. Also, I had some time constraints while making this for film school - so no shooting and combine, sorry. :)

  • i really liked this "extended" cut of your short, really nice! always liked this short of yours, and the ending far from cheesy, like someone said before, the ending is awesome!! keep it up! :D cheers,

  • fantastic work man, loved it :)

  • Damn, nice job with the video, you sir have talent.

  • OMFG AWSHUMZ REALLY

  • how did you make that there is no people in the city? I mean, it WAS empty!..

    I doubt you.

My guess is that you just took a picture of a place in the right time, when there are no people. And just green-screen in your self[you told you didn't, but why should i believe]

Beside, the movie was long and boring. Just some guy killing one little robot. I mean, c'mon! you can do better on story. You know i forced my self to watch till end to criticize your film.

face it, you are editor, not writer

  • well, you guessed wrong.

and, by the way, I'm a director, not an editor.

  • EPIC!

  • awesome >:D

  • Hey, nice peace bro :) The ending was fantastic.

  • anyhow, haha, nice job, its better if you do upload it in HD. =)

  • LOL! Filipino? astig!

  • I like that=)

  • nice end.. :D

  • Wooooow, nice dream ^^

  • I like this, you should make one with more action, maybe a story of a rebel living in the suburbs of City seventeen, escaping through the canals? Just trying to give ideas. This still is beast :)

  • awesome film mate

    keeep it up

    great

    5/5

  • ok cool

  • cool!!

  • Good job, buddy! Good luck! :)

  • God job, buddy! Good luck! :)

  • That nearly got a 5 from me but it got outclassed by escape from city 17 :P

apart from the cheesy ending it was good.

  • did you render the hl2 models yourself or did you rip them from the game and if you ripped them from the game how did render them so nicely and how did you make such excellent 3d tracking if you could message me back i really appreciate it

  • I took the models from HL2, imported them to 3dsmax, applied the vertex weld modifier to make them smoother, set up a light-dome to match the lighting of the environment and then rendered them with mental ray. later on during post production I did some grading too. The 3D tracking was done with syntheyes and with boujou. hope that helped :)

  • lol ya or DOG

  • It was a bit slow, but you really cought the mood of a dystopia.

I think the Music should have been a bit louder.

And the character we follows doesn't look like a citizen from C17 exactly, other than that it felt really authentic and i will surely watch it again.

  • how did u do that :O very nice done man

  • nice just saying but the city scanner is bigger

  • yeah I noticed that too. after I finished the whole movie tho. :| let's just pretend this one isn't fully grown yet.

  • Brilliant work :) May I ask how the heck you managed the smoothness of the shot at 4:54?

  • thank you! for this shot I mounted the XL-1 on a rather small, very basic manual camera crane. I rented it from a rental which made most of their gear by themselves. Although it was balanced out perfectly, it was quite hard to operate it in a steady and smooth way because it wasn't very stable at all. It took me 7 takes to get this shot right, no other shot was more difficult. however, its one of the shots that was most fun to shoot and that I'm most proud of.

  • Its a VERY nice shot :D Paid off nicely. Also I forgot to mention I love the ending and the very atmospheric first shots at the start, nice work man.

  • one of the best videos of half life ever

  • i wish i could have my own pet strider be so cool its unstoppable!!! nice vid btw 100/5

  • Awesome! That could take much time to record when nobody's on the streets

  • hahaha lol very nicely done, would have liked to see more than the striders tho

  • Wow very nicely done. I wish i knew how to do 3d trackign and that stuff. Looks like a lot of fun.

  • would be funnier if the tri pod thingy would look in to window :D

  • Strider

  • called a strider

  • Incredible!

  • nice

  • Meh i like escape from city 17 better. no offense

  • This is good.

Not quite as good as Escape from City 17.

That acting could be better, the guys reactions at the beginning seemed a little artificial. Could do with more emotion.

Overall the cinematography was great, but a few shots lagged behind the standrad of the others.

  • This was cool

  • thats was COOL i wish they make a real movie like this :D

  • Gooooooooooooooood :D:D:D:D

  • damn that looks good

  • So hes the only one that have survived in City 17

  • wow, that was amasing, really interesting, and the end, wow so great. you make a good work

  • i love to see how people dedicate to make these films good work man keep it up.

  • wikit job bro 5 stars

  • Sigh....America doesn't have the awesome urban shooting locations like Europe does, no matter how hard you look.

  • colognes a great place for filming half life...especially cause of all the old half-bombed, graffiti-scribbled factories in the industirial part of town, (or in other cities in Germany, you can find exactly the same...)great stuff man!!

  • holy shit that was one of the best half life 2 vids ever

  • pretty damn fine. loved the twist at the end!

  • eh nice nice

  • god damn. i hated the striders in HL2. they were the worst

  • ur just like Michael Jackson! 5:48

  • Nice! But go watch Escape From City 17 It's awesome! Done by Purchase Brothers.

  • That Was Amazing.

    Really Good job. 5/5

  • That was really cool. GJ!!! I loved it ^^

  • that was pretty wicked mate

  • Grodon Freeman, Far east version!!

  • Very cool,

    Where was this filmed?

  • I shot it in Cologne/Germany. click on more info to read more details about this project. ;)

  • Real good =D

  • good work man!

wish i could make a short film like this.

    5/5

  • this is so cool, i like the end...

  • To solve the quality problem around 6:30,

    Just press the "HD" button.

    This worked for me.

  • i wish i had a scanner.

  • The end was awesome.

  • cool film

  • why is the quility so bad around 6:30 it was good before

  • thanks for pointing that out. I haven't noticed that before and I'm quite sure it wasn't like that when I uploaded my video more than a year ago. I will see if I can do something about it.

  • your welcome.

  • Great work thanks

  • you.... Shouldnt have hit the scanner...

  • just a game? or is it?

  • Where is a combine? Film is cool, but escape from sity-17 better. где комбайны? фильм вроде ничего, но побег из сити 17 лучше.

  • the effects are awesome ,

  • It was a little boring... until he picked up the crowbar. (FTW!) lol, and I swear the factory he ran from the strider in looked like it had antlion pits in it!

  • this is pretty good almost as good as the p brothers

  • 6:09 RUUUUN FUCKING RUUUUN!!!!!!!!!

  • good work

  • this take gun out of pocket type shit

  • EPIC!

  • LOL @ 5:10. Don't think the crowbar's gonna help you there, buddy.

  • Wow, this wasn't bad. Great special effects and the music was AWESOME. A very suspenceful film too.

    Also lol @ the end.

  • lol M. Jackson move right there @ 5:48

  • good job

  • no saying nothing^^

  • Waw !
