  • so... its all different names for the same instruments?!?!?!?!

  • @Alusnovalotus More or less. the characters for zither is the same character in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. But it's pronunciation varies. The instruments themselves also differ. Think norwegian hardanger and the violin. Both are essentially fiddles. The koto has less strings then the guzheng. But Guzhengs from 1000 years ago looked the same as kotos....it's like the baroque versions vs the modern versions in some sense.

  • @snillocgrom well, whatever, it does never change the fact most of japanese or probably 100% korean culture were just shittty copies of Chinese ancient culture.

  • @xyrules666 Japanese culture as we know it now is the result of the mix of foreign influences and their native culture existant before being in contact with the continent.

Korean culture is also heavily influenced by Chinese culture. Even China has been influenced by Japanese and Korean cultures.

Regardless of this fact, China, Japan and Korea are different cultures.

Just look at Europe and how those countries influenced each other so heavily through history.

  • Wow! superb!

  • すごい!

  • could anyone tell the name of all the instruments in this video? please, i'd be really grateful.. p.s.: sorry for my bad english :(

  • @chicopolino

the flute: shakuhachi; the "guitar": shamisen, the "harp": koto

  • @alincielo thank u sooo much =D

  • great

  • amazing

  • use a tripod, a triiipooood...

  • great playing /music, the only drawback is the clinical setting and high light levels, its like some sort of political debate at a town hall !!!!

  • Not fond of the shakuhachi personally. Sometimes it sounds good, but then it hits one of those abrupt breathy notes that I hate.

  • @regulusinmyhand a bit like saying i like electric guitatar but dont like those highest notes

  • i love japanese instruments so much, such relaxing sounds

  • Пять баллов)супер.

  • wonderful music! i love it!!

  • arranged Yagibushi! XD

  • I play heavy, non-traditional Shakuhachi & love all the jazz & other styles people will use this awsome instrument for. But when I hear (and see) it played like this, it gives me an ancient mystical feeling that's hard to put into words. And hearing the really old peices makes me feel a connection to that time, knowing that it has been played with passion and dedication since then & with it carrying over some of the rightious aspects of that time, that the people living now need more of.

  • hermozo :)

  • the mystical, exotic air surrounding the instruments combined with that scale evoke such an unexplainable feeling, it's like unconsciously drifting in the clouds, but also the feeling of a sacred atmosphere...

  • please do not use the word exotic.

it implies that asian culture is "weird" or not normal, which has been the racist justification for western influence in asia and is the reason why many asian people today disown their asian culture.

  • Whoa, ok, I just thought exotic meant something that was interestingly foreign

  • yeah, on the surface words like exotic or oriental don't seem bad, but they're all part of an idea that asian culture is backwards.

  • Its actually a lot more complicated than that.... but that's a piece of the picture, though an over simplified binary one, most likely based on the Saidian outlook.... which is generally considered a little trite these days. Good to make people aware of some of the implications though I guess.

  • @yellowfellow

Well, to me 'exotic' means something mystical, something unknown to common john smith in america or other jan kowalski from poland. I think it's positive word. Like... amazingly foreign. ^^ That's my point.

  • @Panczekolada yes, you and hundreds of millions of other people think that way. but what you dont realize is that that word is probably more then often used for asian culture as part of an idea that west and eastern cultures are nothing alike.

when something comes from poland comes from the united states, no one is going to say OHH THATS EXOTIC even though those are difference countries and the culture is different, because its an idea that European culture is somehow the norm.

  • I guess you are right. That's because (at least I presume that) this word was 'invented' by some french/english/spanish people back in time that everything from outside europe was -amazing- to. So I think I could get your point but it's like seeking for problems where they don't necessarily exist.. After all we call the hot dancers from Rio de Janeiro 'exotic' ones sometimes. ^^

  • @Panczekolada are you kidding? you really think that problem of euro-centrism doesn't affect people today especially in asia?

when anime, which is pretty much the most popular art form, is flooded with characters who have european colored eyes and hair? when their movie soundtracks don't even want to use the instruments made by their own country. When everyone in power in japan wears a british suit instead of a kimono?

    you're saying problems dont exist?

  • Wow, easy now, fella.

I understand that Japan has been flooded by european and american(lol, like they had any, freed slaves) cultures but that's normal. Same goes for Poland where everyone tries to be american. It's just more visible in Japan because of Nihon's rich tradition, culture and the difference between casual life pattern. I've read about Kamikaze pilots lately and I really admire that they were meant to be the heroic shield (after death) against cheap and corrupted cultures of west.

  • Sweet! *****

  • Incredible!!!!! Magnificent performance on perhaps the most amazing flute in the World....the Shakuhachi!!!! Thank you Japan for your music and culture!!!

  • Many thanks for uploading!

  • Beautiful and relaxing

  • are there any cds sold with shakuhachi music on them? if so, where can I get the cd?

  • a martial arts store known as "e-bogu" sells "Samurai" CD's for all of us wannabes.

  • Now this is beautiful, I have nothing against turks, but damn, those turkish zurnas just make noise to my ears, this, is simply superb, it takes my soul to another world, I truly hope people who like that zurna sound feel the same way I feel about shakuhachi.

  • Comment removed

  • The solo piece in the middle is gorgeous! It must be a very well known piece for shakuhachi, because I know I've heard this before on one of my meditation CDs.

  • This has the sound of the human soul on a lonely night.

  • I love the shamisen :)

  • sounds like a 1.9 shakuhachi

  • It is quite lovely, but if the sound quality was better it would be absolutely magnificent.

  • I love it ^_^ I'd like to look into learning how to play the Shakuhachi

  • Sublime music, I've payed acoustic guitar for 30 years now I want to learn how to play the Shakuhachi.

  • Maybe biwa I will do some more research and listening.

  • world class

  • aah peace

  • SHO CUUUTE, OH MY GOD!!!!! LOL.

  • omg Maj7(b5) is my favorite chord!!!!!

  • I like it, but is it a traditional or composed?

  • The first piece sounds, well - very new (late 20'th century), and influenced by western music, Am I wrong? Do you know anything about the second solo piece? Is the third some version of Tsuro no Sugomory? I'm trying to understand classical/traditional shakuhachi music, Especially pieces like Koku, Shin Kyorei and San'ya. I'm trying to to learn how to approach them as a listener. Sometimes I think I can get a glimpse of unearthly beauty that they suggest...

  • don't try too hard, just close the eyes of your mind and let the misic do the rest. Often when we try too hard things don't happen. Be more like a child and return to purity.

  • I'm trying lol

Seriously, it isn't easy, if that's what it takes.

Come to think of it, what you're suggesting seems to be the most difficult thing to achieve.

  • I love that instrument .. it's all perfect.

    I love the scales..

    just perfect!

  • Hello, I'm reading a book, it's a beautiful light story about a little boy thathis destiny brings to a great teacher to learn the shakuhachi and it's life-philosophy-it's from Hans Kruppa(german autor)"Kaito" (warscheinlich sprichst du deutsch? ;) -it's a wonderful instrument...

  • my grandma's maiden name is Kaneko so I am probably some how realted to Tomoe

  • はいとてもすごいです!

  • tHIS IS GREAT! What r the other instruments?

  • to the right is the koto and the middle is shamisen

  • I love this instrument it's stunningly beautiful sound resonates with the ancient soul.

  • Love the shakuhachi alone the best. Such an earthy and mysterious sound.

  • this wat i luv of japan all its acient things new japan is kool but i just luv the beauty of the older things

  • Yes, The Tale of Genji is a great book.

  • this is incredible.

  • I love her Hakama, it's so cool! Shakuhachi is quite a well known instrument, unless ppl tend focuse more on the Koto. U might want to explore asian cultures to learn more of different cultures and such.

    Domo Arigato!

    -kagura (chinese bamboo flute player)

  • koto :/

I think more people focus on the shamisen than any other Japanese instrument. Hell they may focus on it more than any instrument in Asia because it is a Chinese originated instrument and so many other countries in Asia adopted it...

  • what difference it makes whether it originates from china or not? everything originates from somewhere in this world. just enjoy and keep your ignorant comments for yourself, now we have pro-chinese people everywhere these days..gosh..

  • How the hell did you think I was pro-Chinese off of this comment? I'm pro Japanese more than China. I like all of Asia. I was just praising the shamisen. Not China.

  • it has a lot to do with whether the sakuhachi is from china every instrument has originated from somewhere you are right but we must respect the one who creates it,he is the one who bring this heavenly sound to us we should be graetful for that

  • Eric the flute maker .. produces this flute along with other bamboo flutes. I'm going to buy one their and see how it goes .. his prices are much cheaper then the range you listed. Do a yahoo search "Eric Flute Maker " .

  • I own a couple of eric's flutes, but they are not Shakuhachi. The flute he makes is tuned like a shakuhachi, but to get a good tone, you need to get a root end flute from a full time shakuhachi maker. Trust me, the difference is Huge. Check out Gwflutesdotcom He is an excellent shakuhachi maker. good prices too. I am not trying to sound like an ad, but I own one of his flutes and they sound amazing.

  • Wow, that was really beautiful. Awesome ^_^

  • Yep, that's the real, genuine thing -- blows away all the part-timers and imposters. Sorry, but that's the way it goes when it comes to tradition. If you don't know it, don't slag it.

  • Absolutely beautiful. If I could play with even half this skill and passion I could die a happy man :o)

  • music lives 4 eternity

  • Just perfect!!! Your're right,Shakuhachi is not a well known instrument as many traditional wind instruments, but the beauty and the sublime feelings found in music are what brings the magic to our world!!! (I'm a flute player and i have my own shakuhachi made by myself, with a plastic tube, it's sounds well, but never like a bamboo Shakuachi)

  • How do you make one? Can the measurements be found anywhere? I have a flute too and just getting to listen to the shakuhachi online, it sounds like a pretty enchanting and versatile instrument when it comes to ways of blowing it. They cost a few hundred dollars though and hard to find at least here in Oz.

  • That was great. Don't know the first piece, but the two solo pieces were shika no tone and the other shin kyorei, both part of the Kinko ryu repertoire. Excellently done, I need to see if I can find a cd from her.

  • I'm sure those grown up on this find it fantastic, but I can't "take" 10 minutes of it :-)

It is like the Hardanger violin played in Norway. I find it great to listen to - others liken it to a wailing cat! HEhe!
