If you own or going to bye a ford F150 truck or any VEHICLE that has a 5.4 3 valve engine DON"t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The spark plugs are a bitch to change and cost about 600. and the camphases go out between 40,000 60, and 80,000 the cost to fix is about 2,200.

If you know anyone who this has happen to please call 1800-392-3673 and complain they said if there is enough issues they may recall and pay for it.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just a little info for all you 5.4 3valve owners.you can take it or leave it.Ford is letting all of us down. There are multiple phaser defects out there, and they cant pinpoint when the defective phasers were made because there is no date code imprinted on the gears.they blame the wrong oil viscosity thats bs.the phasers are locked out by a loking pin untill oil is thin enough to pass thru a tiny hole or oil temp is around 45 degrees then the phasers start working.I have 150k 10w40 since0m nonois

  • All 04-09 f150's are riddled with problems from the IWE,solenoids, plugs, and vacuum lines...anyone want to buy mine.

  • I do fuck face....the 04 05 years are epidemic with this problem.

  • I have a 2010 F250 with the 5.4 with only 2500 miles it started making a knocking noise when the engine was warm. I took it to the dealer and they told me they got a bad batch of cam phasers in 2010, so they replaced it and it still does the same thing.

  • Ford sucks....after all the money I paid for my truck these pricks wont honor something that should be a recall.....we should all ban together and contact the better business bureau.....I can't even sell my truck because of this without taking a bath on the sale....ford sucks

  • @azascan change your oil maintain your truck and stop whining

  • Have any of you seen the phaser lockouts? Seems like a good idea at first. Lock out the VCT via the cam phasers and prevent future phaser problems. Now, what about performance??? That variable cam feature "increases spreads the power through out the powerband". I know these engines have a long stroke with much higher torque than horse power, but how do they run with the phasers locked? What position are they locked to? High RPM HP or low end torque. This is a big move to fix a small problem.

  • ive been running 5w20 in my 07 f150 5.4 since the day it was new!! Never been over 4500 miles on an oil change and always use motorcraft "ford" oem filter! But however my truck still sounds like a peanut thrasher when it warms up!! only 30k miles.

  • The vacuum line was disconnected from the heater control valve. ?? Did you notice ??

  • I have an 06 5.4 3V as well, and my Ford dealership said it was not a common problem. They said it was normal wear and tear and the the warranty would not cover it. So I am now looking at a $1,400 bill. I just ran a carbon cleaner through the oil and ran it for 150 miles and did the oil change. I've heard its the oil being used, I put in a 10W30 Full Synthetic and half a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment. But now it seems to shake on a stop, any other suggestions?

  • @emyreth07 - the engine oil matters a lot on these tritons... they're supposed to use 5W20 because the passages inside the phaser are freaking tiny. In order to get the right oil pressure and get the oil to actually lubricate inside these passages, the oil must be very thin. 10-30 is just too thick.

In addition, an other thing that would probably be beneficial is going to grease monkey and getting an engine purge and oil change to the 5-20, and running some fuel system cleaner

  • @emyreth07

read my above reply. Just use something like catrol gt 5w-20, always, and the correct filter, very important. the only additive I have ever (in 35yrs) found to really work is the Dura-lube, and I buy it at our local general discount store by the 12-pack case for like 32$, and use the small aditive only size, not the larger 32 ounce (with 20-40 oil). I ahve been around the suto scene for over 38 years, this is the only legitimate additive I have ever found and I use it.

  • just had mine replaced timing chains tensioners guides phasers lash adjusters solenoids sprokets that is the full tsb for ford total bill $3300

  • It only had 34,400 miles on it it has 45,000 now

  • I have the same problem on my 05 F150 took it to the dealer 3 times they replaced phasers timing chains and injectors they also did my oil change twice I did the third one they blamed me for putting a after market oil filter they said they found pieces of the oil filter on the cam and that's what was causing the problem truck been making noise since the first time I took it in they replaced the rocker arms still hear the tapping noise they told me to take it to another dealer now Champion Ford

  • I got a 05 f150 5.4l. i let the cam phaser issue go for 160,000 miles, the motor had been losing power and now its blown up. I wonder if the cam phaser problem had anything to do with it.

  • THE PROBLEM=ford has told its customers to use the wrong oil in this engines as the correct oil is very expensive!! and they dont want to have to buy it to use it in their services! why light weight oil? because the oil gallaries leading to the cam phasers are tiny so to keep pressure to the cam phasers you mast have the correct flow rate when you dont the cam phaser arnt working correctly wich alters the cam timing and lash adjuster values via the ecu!!

  • @G2203V54 More good info. Thanks. I'm only familiar with the 5.4 with variable timing, and the Honda's VTEC. Both require a light wt synth oil because they have little passages that the oil has to pass through in order to adjust the cam timing on the fly. I wonder if any one is doing it differently?. Anyway, thanks again.

  • @G2203V54 not always the case these things are failing with low low mileage its was a poor design and has caused problem after problem the 08 edge, taurus, sable and others with the 3.5 have had the same problem due to the factory oil filter coming apart the 5.4 is junk cam phaser concerns, now engine failures and the breaking spark plugs

  • @G2203V54 oil galleries is that where they hang all the oil paintings? I have never been to an oil gallery would love to see one, also the oil price is no more than any other name brand oil

  • THE FIX=ford says its normal becuase they use the wrong oil in these engines..... swap to a 5-20w full syn oil(you will gain HP and fuel mileage from this also),make sure you get new factory oil filter!! run a engine carbon cleaner thru it,do a cpl of times for higher mileage engines.also check your egr line for blockages or cracks!

run a bottle or 2 of octane booster or fuel treatment and give the ecu some time to adjst and you will never hear that noise again!!

  • @G2203V54 I'm running AutoRX in it right now in the hope that it will clean up the engine. I'm also using a factory filter, and after I finish the AutoRX routine, I plan on using the synth oil. Thanks for the tip on the egr line and the booster. I'll record the finish product when it's done (probably this summer). I don't drive the truck a lot.

  • @G2203V54 when you say "run a engine carbon cleaner thru it"

do you mean in the old engine oil?

  • @LPcustom76 I just purchased a 100k f150 5.4.. Same bad knock at low oil startup... and at stopped situations where I power up... Not a healthy sound.... Dealer said.,,, Service bullletin out about clogged oil port from bad oil filters.... I call BS. Thats Fords excuse for a recall must. These phasers are defective. Look at all the people on the net trying to find out a fix... over 100k searching for the holy grail.... for the 5.4 3v motor.

  • @sfcparkerski

just a note, there ARE oil filters you do not want to use on these motor. Mine has over 260k on it and yes, use the 5w-20 oil, change I cange it religously at 3-4k and you need to use the better motorcraft filter. It will say right on the box "this filter contains the modified/improved drain back vavle. That is the key, other brands have this also but cost alot more. These motors will after sitting just a few minutes drain ALL the engine oil to the pan, and creat a dry start cond

  • Ford says that sound is normal. I posted a video response of my 3v 5.4, but it has an aftermarket racing cam. But it still has that clicking sound. My camera isn't very good so it's hard to hear.

  • I watched your video (nice truck!). I didn't hear the clicking, but if you say it's there I believe you. I've done a lot of online research into the issue. The difference between cam phasors being too loud, and acceptable seems to be a judgement call.

The Ford tech who looked at my truck told me he had heard a lot worse, so I told him I was going to continue to drive it. He told me if it gets worse, fix it.

I have access to 5.4 that has less then 10K miles. I'll record it.
