@Customgamer9 it took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to play one. It's a heck of a lot difficult to play than it seems, especially changing what you are singing, but it's neat sounding once you figure out how to do it.
Unglaublich was er mit der Tuba hinbekommt. Vor allem ist das ein richtiger Ohrwurm, wenn er richtig loslegt. Echt mal was anderes, und vor allem Klasse!
Betachicken, let me explain the madness. This guy is insanely good and he makes tuba players want to bust a nut on their computer screen. That's about it
@Betachiken "Its just a combination of double tonguing in the low range, using your diaphragm for accents, and singing while you play. Its very simple really......let me show you" - Oystein Baadsvik, he said this to me today.
this guy is awesome. he did a master class at my college one time. it was mandatory for all tuba students to attend. lol. so i got to meet him and laugh as he serenaded the only female player in the studio.
@92796Apollo You could probably use some breath control. When you breathe, try saying "Home" as you breathe in - you'll fill from the bottom of your lungs and diaphragm, and you'll also be able to fill your lungs up more with a normal breath right after it. Easy way to double your lung capacity.
Actually I play the clarinet, and I didn't like the tuba, until this March (maybe because the tuba players around me are... ehm, nevermind), when I participated in an international music competition, where Baadsvik was a jury member. After the competition there was a jury's concert, and he played this piece (in solo version) on it. It was my best ever concert experience, it was fantastic to hear him live. Since then I like and respect the tuba. Thanks for sharing this awesome vid!
the amazing thing about this is how in tune this is. he is playing/singing a perfect fifth most of the time. which is one of the hardest intervals to tune. plus there's the fact that his tone is wonderfully resonant while he is using multiphonics, and his singing voice through the horn doesnt sound bad either. and his beatboxing/sounds that come out of his horn at 6:03 are also impressive. Great josb, oystein!
Shut the fuck up that guy is brilliant, if you don't think it is PISS OFF. Infact that is impossible thinking this is crap^^ Unless you are totally retarded
FUCK. the first trombone part was high as tits in this song. It was hard because we played high parts before that too. Jezus. I need to work on my endurance. But WOW. this guy is a god on tuba. bravo.
It's quite simple, although at first instead of going directly to the horn, try it with just your lips, it should only take a few tries. Next, you take it to the mouthpiece, same results, then take it to the horn. It should really only take a few days to make a good sound.
@Motorfordtoyota It's actually called sing-play. I know it sounds a little silly, but it's true. Multiphonics is actually when you have certain fingerings that produce multiple tones, which you can't do on a tuba. I thought the same thing until my theory professor corrected me in a 20th century theory class.
Wow! I'm pretty sure that I heard just about everything you can do with one horn in that video. There was the usual fundamental note of a tuba being played normally, a second note being "sung" into the mouthpiece, beat frequencies (which were sometimes musical) of those two notes, overtones and harmonics, and more modulation than a tuba should be able to produce. Amazing!
I understand what polyphonics are to an extent, but where does the didgeridoo-like drone sound come from? Is that just just a bi-product of singing while playing? I've experimented with it a little at home, but I am a trumpet player so trying to sing and play a tuba at once is way more air than I'm used to using. Anyone know?
@Kickerinthehead Because the mouthpiece of a Tuba is so big and the tubing soo wide, it alows the player to form vowel shapes and manipulate the pitches more easily. That's the digeridoo-like affect. It's also easier to do 10ths and 12ths and other large intervals on tuba. :) plus Oystein is ridiculous!
Throat singing already gives you 3 pitches, but it'd be hard to get the overtone while playing horn, so three is probably the limit. I think he's got three going.
@SmokinA55 Sure he does, he plays the Tenor Tuba whenever he's not playing a full tuba. (Pro Tip: Euphs are called Tenor Tubas in some circles.)(But naw, I respect Euphs.)
the key to do this is to like play it and sing. lets say its a euphonium and you start in a C to play regular but you sing to and you sing in a G then you will get this song. this is simply explained.
I got to see Oystein live with a pianist in Northfield Minnesota a few years ago. It was an entertaining concert and I left wanting more. It was fantastic. If you ever get the chance I urge you to see him live. Miraphone - who makes some of the best tubas available - made the Norwegian Star series of EE flat Tubas in collaboration with Oystein. I cant think of a higher recognition in the field of tuba playing than that.
