Nope, 2x2 is just a nominal size before planing! The actual size of the planed timber is about 45x45mm, which is about 1.75". You also lose a little depth each time you sand the rings flat (approx 1mm from each edge, or just under a 16th of an inch) so once all three have been sanded flat on both sides, the drum was 5" deep!
@Phrase Thanks, I have a beautiful hunk of figured maple that I'm going to use. I can get pieces that are 1.5" inches deep out of it. I'll attempt the same method. I'll post on GN when done. Likely it will be a piccolo snare.
You listed the starting dimension as 2x2. Is it really 2 inches x 2 inches or something else?
If 2 inch depth, how does it become 5" when the three sections are stacked up?
