  • Very tasty! Roy Haynes is the master!

  • awesome roy

  • What tune is this? So kiillliinnggg. This stuff gives me goosebumps it's so tight.

  • THUMBS UP FOR OLD OVER TUNE TOMS LOL

  • SUPER

  • haha he left the drum key in the second tom tom xD

  • i hope i am anywhere near this good when i am 86

  • love the shades, roy; MAJOR PROPS to you sir!!!

  • This tune is called "Summertime". It's all about laying those triplets at the right time on the right moment... my rig's as massive as Simon Phillips's, but it all just comes down to technique, no matter what size your gear is. My hats off to THE LEGEND - Roy Haynes.

  • Performing with Roy Haynes in this video is:

    Jaleel Shaw - Soprano Saxophone

    Martin Bejerano - Piano

    David Wong - Bass

  • 2:20 Right on 2 and 3 woooooooo. What drive!

  • too old for extreme rolls and fills

  • @antibulletdodger101 Stan getz 4 tet feat. Roy Haynes part 5 !!!!! WATCH THIS AND GET BACK TO ME. ROY HAYNES IS ONE OF THE MASTERS. NO NEED FOR A MILLION DRUMS JUST COMPLETE COMMAND.

  • Roy is a "Class Act"

    Swing On!!!

  • he shuck the hand of miles davis.. respect

  • To any rockers out there who don't know: Your idols bow down to Roy Haynes. More than likely, to the negative posters, your idols bow down to the idols who bow down to Roy. And that's only the tiniest fraction of what he's done. He changed drumming forever and influenced Elvin Jones and Tony Williams' concept. Elvin & Tony influenced Bonham, Moon, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, etc. Check more stuff on YouTube, listen to one of the couple hundred recordings he's on, THEN form an opinion.

  • He can say more with those snare accents than most drummers with massive drumkits and massive egos who practice 12 hours a day just to add 4 more bpm. Less is more.

  • great drums and even a better song... this makes me feel good and it's all about feeling good

  • the snare looks like it is 18" diameter

  • @42nddrums Indeed, and if you take a look at 1:38, you'll see his bass drum beater is like 18 inches too.

  • @mikper7 I love you.

  • Incredible he is 85. Looks like.. 23

  • That is the craziest relationship between throne height and snare drum I have ever seen.

  • @pgoindi good observation. I wonder if the throne-snare height relationship is some how linked to the phenomena of how pant waistlines will rise with a man's age. More research is needed

  • @0509killer that is very funny. I haven't burst out laughing like that in a while...thanks.

  • Love the minimalist kit.

  • he can't even sit up straight.

    classic drumming.

  • Jazz with matched grip!

  • @29dave loool u cant argue with him

  • @29dave wtf... lol

  • My god that was beautiful. Wasn't sure any real music was getting performed any more. Certainly not on television!

  • I hate when people leave the key in and it buzzes

  • Roy is definetely the very best drummer ever, a true amazingly gifted musician, I suggest that the drum community should declare him THE KING OF ALL DRUMMERS, anyone agrees?

  • @Themartinvaquero TONY ALLEN.

  • look at his ass lol hahah what a dude

  • thats a huge snare

  • omg. Pocket filled. Checkmate. Jesus, what incredible taste and timing.

  • Fantastic! He is still keepin it in time an creating a great dynamic with the band!

  • Is that man 86 and still drumming?

    Wow... Good job

  • A very nice gentleman as well as well as a fantastic drummer.............

  • I saw a show with Roy, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and it was mind blowing...and that was 5 years ago! Haynes is just a different level!

  • L'avevo visto trent'anni orsono con Chick Corea...... è ancora un grande

  • what a guy!! 80+ and still swinging!

  • Pure Class.

To develop that sense of relaxed feel, Groove, Phrasing and Musical understanding takes 6 decades.

Man he's 85 and still sounding and looking SHARP !!

  • I notice that he's aligned his kick beater to strike near the rim of his bass drum rather than the center. I wonder why he does that. (Probably to get a quieter sound.)

  • @saladinkeyes

It's an 18" bass drum so the beater hits up higher than with a 22" where it hits more or less dead centre.

You also get more interesting overtones this way, this also applies to 24" and 26" bass drums where the beater hits below the centre.

  • Great chops. Inspirational. Love the Ludwig speed King pedal. One of the greats.

  • He's totally in it.

It sounds so spastic, and hence so natural.

    Awesome shit right there.

  • Pure class. Lots of respect for this guy.

  • The REAL Deal !!!!

  • So old school. Level toms, visible drum key, and flat top ride. Love it.

  • Check the swing on that kick pedal beater

  • I like how you can see him "pronouncing" and enunciating his grooves while he plays. Awesome.

  • David should invite "Sebastian Wittaker and the Creators" they are an awesome band as well

  • Thumbs for the drum key left in!!!

  • @thepain258 thumbs up for the desperation in you comment!!!

  • he looks like an idiot hitting the drums, but in reality, this is extremely difficult.

  • @GloriaChiever extremely ? yap its difficult, but not extremely .......;)

  • Roy Haynes is an absolute legend! He's played with everyone from Miles Davis to Pat Metheny. Anyone can say that this isn't impressive for age 85 must be senile.

  • @darthjoey13 I wonder about the four ass-clowns who disliked this. There's no shortage of them in this world.

  • @MrHenryrules Agreed. Let's see if those 4 fools can ever get to show their (lack of ) skills on Letterman

  • @darthjoey13 *Bird too =]

  • to all with dislikes - you need to leave the world of clueless! He didn't play to dazzle you with chops, he played for the sake of music - our sad society of music critiques.

  • @meanmud1 sorry dude, gotta disagree. i expected waaaay more from a guy with his pedigree. dont forget, its DRUM SOLO WEEK, he was there to dazzle us. i'm sorry but bernard purdie eats this guy.

  • @sparkles67 I'm certain Mr. Purdie would disagree with you.

  • @sparkles67 ya seriously, there is nothing drum solo about this

  • just plain bad I dont care how old he is

  • the drums sound very bad... perhaps he can hire someone to tune them up so they won't sound like 5 gallon plastic buckets

  • not good in my opinion, but I'm not into jazz as well ^^

  • @SenioreSpielbergo - if you are a drummer, he has influenced you or one of your idols or one of your idols idols, without ANY doubt. Look him up ... check out his AGE. 86 and still going. let's see how good you are, at whatever you do, when you hit 80

  • RAE YOU PEOPLE DEF!? HE SUCKS

  • Roy Haynes says more musically with one hit of his snare drum then any other performer's whole solo from drum solo week. Bow down to the legend.

  • man, Roy at 86! still groovin with the best of them.. Looks so fragile playing but sounds sooo great.. Ill be a lucky man if at his age I can get on a drum throne, let alone play like he does..

  • Actually, Roy was all set to go play a solo but "The Late Show" called and asked if he would please bring his band to play as well. There's really not that much more you can do with a band an a solo in the 3 minute window that they give you ....especially not for an 86 guy that doesn't get a chance to warm up. I wonder what you hard rock guys will be doing at 86 (if you even live that long and can still hear)!

  • @TheJazzydrummer im pretty sure tommy aldridge is waaay into his 60's. look bottom line is, hes a legend, but like everything, better guys have come along. i'm personnally not impressed and think purdie has way more feel.

  • Neil Peart KICKS HIS AZZ

  • @HRD666 Give me Keith Moon any day. Sloppy as a train wreck but makes you feel something (usually excitement) when he played. Or Dave Grohl.

  • @MiRaleigh I don't think I'd go so far as to say that Neil Peart gets no joy out of the amount of effort he puts into his technically perfected pieces or that he isn't into the fans... He's just an intense perfectionist who is never 100% satisfied with his achievements and constantly pushes himself. He took nearly a year off from RUSH to study under Freddie Gruber and completely changed his methods and approach to playing because of it... He does use a lot of sampling and effects in his solos...

  • ...but I kind of enjoy his Big Band swing stuff and some of the African Tribal stuff - not to mention his tribute to Buddy Rich project!! Unfortunately I've never been a Moon/The Who fan but I have nothing but respect for his contributions to drumming! NEVER liked PINK FLOYD or the DOORS at all either... John Bonham & Ian Paice were the ones who inspired me the most. Ironically, I've never thought much of Peter Criss - yet I took lessons from Eric Singer who never gotten his due respect!!

  • @HardRockDrummer666 i agree with you on moon,to me he was sloppy. bonham and paice, powell and mcbrain. i enjoyed pearts contribution to the buddy rich tribute. there is a bonham tribute concert on youtube put on by brian tichy, check it out, some of the players are killer, others, not so much. and yeah, eric singer was a great player, as is carr.

  • @sparkles67 The Groove Remains The Same was a good production - all three shows. The original and then they added two encore shows a few months later.

  • @HRD666 That said, let me assure you that I am a RUSH fan and a Neil fan. I don't need to see his DVD. I know he's intelligent, but you can't tell me that there is any joy in what he does. His interviews are all about "work" and "sacrifice" and the "chore" of playing tours..and how "hard" everything is...he's satisfied when he plays well, but there is no joy. He doesn't enjoy fans (good thing Alex and Ged do!). It's all about precision which is fine but leaves little room for emotion.

  • @HRD666 Well, we DO agree on one thing...Tommy Lee is a clown and doesn't belong in the same sentence as the others you mentioned! I was never a Prince fan and didn't know much of Sheila E.'s work prior to the Letterman thing...it surprised me and I thought she nailed it...and most of it was, indeed, solo with the band playing along in small spots (Neil had programmed sounds and backgrounds that he triggered...is this "solo"?).

  • @johnehollenbeck, I know that there are some folks (I won't name any names) that have no clue to what you're speaking of when you say "music"! Thanks for appreciating and it's for people "like you" that Roy makes "music".

Once (back around 1950) when Charlie Parker asked Roy to do a rehearsal for a gig and Buddy Rich had been doing the gig and his drums were there. Buddy walked in just as they were about to start and gave Roy a hard time about using his drums. They became good friends years la

  • The guy is 86. To me, it doesnt matter if other people are better than he is. Music is about being passionate about playing it. I only hope I'm as good as he is on drums when I'm 86. Thank you Mr. Haynes.

  • The guy is 86. To me, it doesnt matter if other people are better than he is. Music is about being passionate about playing it. I only hope I'm as good as he is on drums when I'm 86. Thank you Mr. Haynes.

  • One of these days I'll post the tv/studio rehearsal which was warmer, with hotter drumming!!

  • Thank you Mr. Haynes for playing some music on "drum solo" week!

  • @johnehollenbeck But it was DRUM SOLO week - not WATCH THE DRUMMER PLAY ALONG WITH THE BAND week!! I like watching drummers as much as any drummer would - but where is the SOLO on DRUM SOLO WEEK?!

  • sounds like the music you hear in the Sim City.

and I always love jazz music!!! Love the Drum Solo Week!!!

  • I was there and for an 86 year old man to come out, no having warmed up AT ALL, play in a room that felt as cold as my refrigerator and play like this is amazing. Buddy Rich played a lot of great fast rolls and stuff but I never heard him play MUSICALLY "with feeling". I wonder what most of you guys will be doing at 86!

  • With no offence intended to Mr. Haynes whatsoever - I can't say that I'm very impressed with Dave / CBS's picks for "DRUM SOLO WEEK"!! Neil is ALWAYS a pleasure to behold, Anton kicked it WAY UP at the end (LOVED the episode where DAVE said he said juggling 3 sticks COULD NOT BE DONE!) - but I would not have went with THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH band or even CONSIDERED Sheila E! She was as lame as I expected... PORTNOY, LANG, MANGINI, WACKERMAN, MICKEY JONES, MORELLO - even Peter Criss/Tommy Lee!! LOL

  • @HRD666 Your bias has clouded your judgement. Sheila E. ROCKED and Roy Haynes is a LEGEND. He creates more emotion with one fill than Peart does in his entire solo. Neil is great, as are Mike P. and others, but their playing is clinical and cold - like a soundtrack to a calculus exam. Great drummers stir emotions with their playing (see Gene Krupa). Haynes is in this category - just look at his face while playing. Neil may as well be a robot, as there is no emotion on his face or in his hands.

  • @MiRaleigh Your judgement has been clouded by your bias... SHEILA has NEVER, EVER impressed me in any way so we may as well agree to disagree on that issue!! Never at any time did I show Mr. Haynes any disrespect like you did to Neil Peart - watch a Peart DVD and you will notice two things: He is extremely intellegent and shows little emotion ever. I've been drumming for 40 years and have TOTAL respect for people like Mr. Haynes, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Louis Bellson, etc...

  • @MiRaleigh My point - since I obviously did not state it specifically - was that it was DRUM SOLO week - not watch the drummer play along week! That is why I wasn't very impressed by the work of Sheila E. or Roy Haynes. They are both making a living doing what they love so my comments could never take that fact away and my hat is off to them ALL for that alone... I was hoping to see some AWESOME drum solos like Peart and Figg's were! Anton surprised the HELL out of me towards the end!! KUDOS!!

  • @MiRaleigh That is also why I made the JOKE at the end: "even Peter Criss/Tommy Lee!! LOL" - whom I have never been impressed by ANY of their SOLOS!! Tommy Lee's Flying Drum Solo: ...a little to the LEFT! duggetta duggetta duggetta... A little to the... RIGHT!! duggetta duggetta duggetta... BIG DEAL! Lame as hell and no where near worthy of the attention he's recieved over it. I'd rather watch Thomas Lang play MOONROCK or...?? At least that holds your attention as you watch in awe...

  • What's with that outfit?

  • I'm going to pretend I didn't read that...Kohn....

  • I'm going to pretend I didn't read that...Kohn....

  • I liked this solo a lot better than the one Neil Peart did the following night.

  • looks like the guy from the shinning.

such a shame buddy couldnt play on this

  • Music is the gift of a lifetime.

  • Very cool!

  • WOW, matched grip, never knew... Roy - you're awesome man, and one of my heroes!! :))

  • Big boy toms!

  • wow

  • LEGEND.

  • I want to still be playing and rocking a pair of cool shade like that when I'm 85 yrs old, too.

  • I don't know......... I hated his left hand, and I was really looking forward to seeing a really good solo, but didn't see one. ;(

  • @dtdrummerlady: Yeah, you know you're right. His left hand did seem awful weak--like he was sort of just flailing on the high hat and snare. Maybe he has arthritis or something... it looked like he was barely holding that stick. Still, the guy IS old.

  • Are you sure thats not Kenny Aronoff???? LOL

  • Performing with Roy Haynes in this video is:

    Jaleel Shaw - Soprano Saxophone

    Martin Bejerano - Piano

    David Wong - Bass

  • The legendary Roy Haynes...

Really, the drummer is the rock of a band.

  • What a G. Great performance.
