"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole."
"Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile."
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."
Really powerful commentary. Kieth just keeps getting better and better. Finally someone in the media with a golden tongue who is willing to stand up and fight all this crap. God Bless.
i tend to have an over-all belief that there aren't any really *BAD* presidents, just as thre are no *idiots* that can attain the office. And this is wholly subjective, of course, on your own personal political bent.
I didn't support Clinton, but I don't think he was a "bad" president. I supported Bush, but I don't necessarily believe him to be a "good" president.
The unfortunate thing is that most people outside of America feel exactly the same way as Keith Olbermann. And we don't feel it necessary to use patriotism to justify a failed President.
I have to say, while Bush is not what i want in a president, he is not exactly failed. That evaluation is wholly dependent on your political philosophy. There is also a feeling - on the other side of the aisle form you - that he has had a successful presidency.
History will judge - and maybe in the not-too-distant future. The next two elections will tell the tale of a failed or successful Bush presidency.
From my initial Google search: "Bush Fake News..."
"The practice, which also occurred in the Clinton administration, is continuing despite President Bush's recent call for a clearer demarcation between journalism and government publicity efforts. 'There needs to be a nice independent relationship between the White House and the press,' Mr. Bush told reporters in January, explaining why his administration would no longer pay pundits to support his policies."
funny... i run "bush fake news" in google and i can find no such reference to clinton. how far did you have to dig to find an article that had clinton's name in it? try it our fellow truth seekers.. the whole first page if hits is about this administrations fake news.. press releases filmed to look like news stories.. and it's not only the use of these fake news releases, it's the misuse and unless I missed it somewhere nobody ever claimed the clinton administration was misusing them.
As you suggested, I went to Google, typed in the search criteria: "bush fake news." A list of links came up.
I clicked on the VERY FIRST LINK. It was story by David Barstoe and Robin Stein of the NY Times, entitled, "Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged Television News."
It took me all of three minutes to find that quote. And i didn't even have to type "Clinton" into the search field.
So, again, the search is turning up no "fake or fradulant news," only "unattributable news" which apparantly is only *suspected* of being "covert propoganda," in violation with the Office of Accountability.
Those stories are in the Google list link after link after link. So far, there have been no "fake events" turn up, only governmental produced stories on those events.
and another thing. the source you did up is dubious at best and you had to skip articles in truthout, the gardian uk, washington post, media matters, americanprogressaction, info wars, and many more before you get to the lone place you use, timeswatch or somesuch who's reason for being is whining about how liberal the new york times is.
and i noticed you didn't address the Armstrong Williams deal where they paid him to take there views and represent them as his own. they bought a "journalist"
Well, JH, I have ONLY been researching for roughly an hour or so, intermingled with varied outside distractions, so I merely read the very first two articles that came up on the Google list. The articles you cite above were not listed in the top two. It's not my fault the Clinton mention was in the very first article on the list.
As far as "not addressing" certain articles, I didn't realize you were expecting me to write a treatise in response to your claims. You simply suggested I do a seach.

It's interesting that you are attempting to impune my word. Is this the tactic your political philosophy espouses when someone offers up a different point of view?
Funny, where I come from, honest debate and substantive dialogue are considered to be good things. Apparantly, that is not the practice here.
For your benefit, Jack, I snapped a screenshot of my desktop, showing two windows. One has the Google search I conducted, the second shows the TruthOut page that contains the New York Times article.
In the screenshot, you'll see the very first link in the list entitled, "White House News Forgeries Widespread." It takes you to TruthOut, and the NYT Barstow & Stein article.
But I get the picture. You're just out to discredit. Who knows, maybe this time you'll call me out as GWB's personal hit man; or perhaps I'm simply a dutiful pawn, spreading misinformation for my Emperor. Wait! Maybe I'm really Rush Limbaugh...
this started with me taking issue with seamsusduggery's use of the word hyperbole and the fact that his comments didn't take issue with what KO actually said. he has now at least made an honest attempt to point out what he disagrees with.
but still, i think KO's reference to the Gettysburg Address was about bush's failure of leadership, not about some plot to keep the pit there, not hyperbole because, even if you disagree, it doesn't reach any threshold of gross exaggeration needed to call it that.
and he challenged "bought off" news media to attain this goal. with the armstrong williams affair for certain, and the misuse of video news releases the comment, at the very least, has some credibility, and therefor, not hyperbole.
I have to concede that there are certainly things that disapoint if not anger me about Bush. He is not what I voted for in 2000 and 2004. I was originally a Steve Forbes supporter who threw in with Bush because I felt he represented my *over-all* political philosophy, though not on every point.
I am a little lost as to where I want to put my energy in the next presidential election, as I consider myself a small "c" conservative Libertarian.
So, you're saying that "standing ovations for Bush" being misreported is proof that Bush bought-off the media to prevent a building of a Ground Zero memorial? Did the Bush Admin. report this clapping fraud? Were ANY audience members standing? Were there SOME that could have led to a misinterpretation? Or was it a... conspiracy??
I'll go Google the search criteria to see how much more crow I can be served, enderwiggin...
And, frankly, are you more concerned with a dissenting poitn being "served," or the "real" truth?
The Core Question is: Is there a violation of procedural accountability regulation, or is there actually "fake, fraudulant" events being manufactured as propoganda? I think the evidence, if you see my earlier responses, points to the former.
no that is NOT what the core question is. you may want to change it to that for your convineince but this was about your comment " He also charges that the Right has "bought off" news media to attain this goal." remember the video we were actually discussing?
also, Keith never said that bush had some goal or plan to keep the site like that. but that it was another failure of leadership.
and it is true they created fake news reports and bought off Armstrong Williams.
I'm not looking for any sort of convenience, I am merely dialoguing. And I am well-aware of the topic at hand, but topics produce topics, and you rifle lots of question while answering very few posed.
And, yes, I DO believe that is the core issue., when you peel away all the layers.
hes absolutely right and its a shame that no matter how much people like olbermann try to explain the truth, people will still ignore and take sides further worsening the situation
At last, America has found the heir to Edward R. Murrow. It's about time someone in the media had the courage to notice - and tell the sheep who haven't yet noticed - that the emperor has no clothes. Here's to the early retirement of the likes of Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter, et. al.
At the beginning of this statement he does not introduce it as news, or investigative at all. He says "last comment", which means opinion in the news world, and he's entitled to it, and he doesn't have to PROVE anything that he says, although how can you dispute the fact that ground zero is still empty with no memorial?
I haven't disputed the fact that this is his personal opinion. I have simply done what everyone else here has done by expressing my opinion regarding his statements.
I went on to ask for journalistic accountability on the claims he is making. Without it, his statements are no more factual than the docu-drama most of you just resisted. And on that basis, perhaps Keith's statements should be edited and censored. No double standards.
I refuse to watch the docu-dramas, United 93, World Trade Center, etc.. As much as I won't forget the happenings on 9/11, I don't need the fabrication of fiction mixed in with the facts to where I can't remember what was real or not.
If you'd like to see proof, I don't know where you can turn. I do think that reporters have been boughten off.But I'm leanin towards conspiracy theory.
Cite an example of the Bush Administration commissioning fake news. Again, rhetoric and political opinion donot count here. As you have asked of me, let's hear some facts and evidence.
TV news reports in America that showed President George Bush getting a standing ovation from potential voters have been exposed as fake, it has emerged.
I suggest you try Googling 'bush fake news'. You might be surprised. Then again I'll be surprised if you do.
Hmmm... from what i am seeing so far in this Google search, there is a lot of talk about "pre-packaged" stories from the White House and other gevernmental stories, but nothing about "fake" stories.
I will concede that the "pre-packaged" "look like" (as the articles state) a violation of the "covert propoganda" regulations.
It looks as if what is constituting "fake news," is only labled as such because it was filmed or recorded by governmental sources instead of "news media." The events "reported" are actual, real events, but in violation of the Office of Accountability's" regulations.
So the issue is not "fake events" being reported, it's stories produced about actual events by a governmental office as opposed to a news media outlet.
Let's argue his words... Olberman utilizes Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in an attempt to illustrate how Bush and the "Right" are preventing a memorial from being built at Ground Zero - his implication being that the Right wants the site kept as a "mass grave;" a scar on the landscape for photo ops. He also charges that the Right has "bought off" news media to attain this goal.
I ask: where is the substantive, researched fact? I'd like to see some proof, rather than Leftist HYPERBOLE.
not all exaggerations are hyperbole. "I nearly died laughing," "I was hopping mad," and "I tried a thousand times." are. show me keith's.
again. this and mr "hkl. don't argue against his words.
olbermann is a complete class above roberts, will, or donaldson imop. will at least writes well.
it's refreshing to me to see keith be passionate because that's how i feel. we are witnessing a time of folly in executive leadership in this country that is unparalleled in American history.
The day Mr Olbermann acquires the same coherence of argument and conciseness which Cokie Roberts, George Will and Sam Donaldson effortlessly display is the day he earns the respect of (at least some of) those who disagree with his conclusions.
Eloquence and passion do not amount to much when one simply rambles on, jumping from one point to another, in the same monologue. The only people you end up "convincing" are those who already agree with you (see the comments above for proof).
Jackhammer111>> What is it about Olberman's commentary that makes you sing it's praise? Like everyone else above, I was commenting in-general as opposed to dissecting his statements.
And, yeah, "hyperbole" IS a cool word. And in this instance, wholly apt.
Unabashed biased. Not a shread of objectivity, but, rather, pure, unadulterated, left Wing Fringe propagandist hyperbole. Why is MSNBC even considered a "journalistic" network, when it's unmitigated Left Wing bias governs it's overall slant on the news. MSNBC is as much a Leftist mouthpiece as the left accuses FoxNews of being for the Right Wing. Shameful commentary.
what you guys call "objectivity" is just another word for humoring the terrormongers in the republican party. keith olbermann is awesome! and he's plainly making the right people mad. right-wingers won't be appeased anymore.
Keith is our generation's Edward R. Murrow. Long before the rest of the media began to play catch-up, Keith has consistently shown that the emperor indeed has no clothes.
May common sense prevail in freeing the American people from this no-checks-and-balances regime & its untruths to those it is supposed to represent. And thanks to Keith for speaking up for us, the People.
It's too bad Olbermann happens to be the ONLY real journalist left, not to mention because everyone else are right wing tools the disillusioned kool aid drinkers try to dismiss him as some raving liberal. It's a shame what our country has become when the Truth becomes considered liberal propaganda.
from 2009: obama is a good leader. my fake news trumps your b.s. from 2004. dweeb.

i tend to have an over-all belief that there aren't any really *BAD* presidents, just as thre are no *idiots* that can attain the office. And this is wholly subjective, of course, on your own personal political bent.
I didn't support Clinton, but I don't think he was a "bad" president. I supported Bush, but I don't necessarily believe him to be a "good" president.
Vote for me.

The unfortunate thing is that most people outside of America feel exactly the same way as Keith Olbermann. And we don't feel it necessary to use patriotism to justify a failed President.

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS: Does the agreement of non-Americans' grant any more substance to Mr O's arguments? Does their disagreement take anything away?
Your counter-argument is irrelevant. Try again--with coherence this time.

Keith Olbermann is a throwback to an earlier era. An era when journalism was more than a means to an end (thanks Tony Snow).
His humor may be what draws people to his newscast but his honesty is what keeps them coming back.

Bush told reporters in January, explaining why his administration would no longer pay pundits to support his policies."
seamusduggery 5 years ago
funny... i run "bush fake news" in google and i can find no such reference to clinton. how far did you have to dig to find an article that had clinton's name in it? try it our fellow truth seekers.. the whole first page if hits is about this administrations fake news.. press releases filmed to look like news stories.. and it's not only the use of these fake news releases, it's the misuse and unless I missed it somewhere nobody ever claimed the clinton administration was misusing them.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
As you suggested, I went to Google, typed in the search criteria: "bush fake news." A list of links came up.
I clicked on the VERY FIRST LINK. It was story by David Barstoe and Robin Stein of the NY Times, entitled, "Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged Television News."
It took me all of three minutes to find that quote. And i didn't even have to type "Clinton" into the search field.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
So, again, the search is turning up no "fake or fradulant news," only "unattributable news" which apparantly is only *suspected* of being "covert propoganda," in violation with the Office of Accountability.
Those stories are in the Google list link after link after link. So far, there have been no "fake events" turn up, only governmental produced stories on those events.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
and another thing. the source you did up is dubious at best and you had to skip articles in truthout, the gardian uk, washington post, media matters, americanprogressaction, info wars, and many more before you get to the lone place you use, timeswatch or somesuch who's reason for being is whining about how liberal the new york times is.
and i noticed you didn't address the Armstrong Williams deal where they paid him to take there views and represent them as his own. they bought a "journalist"
jackhammer111 5 years ago
Well, JH, I have ONLY been researching for roughly an hour or so, intermingled with varied outside distractions, so I merely read the very first two articles that came up on the Google list. The articles you cite above were not listed in the top two. It's not my fault the Clinton mention was in the very first article on the list.
As far as "not addressing" certain articles, I didn't realize you were expecting me to write a treatise in response to your claims. You simply suggested I do a seach.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
And why do you deem the New York Times article by Barstow & Stein as "dubious?"
I thought the New York Times was a pretty legitimate source for news.
Or is it that the article isn't biased enough for your liking...?

Yes, I did indeed say that.
It's interesting that you are attempting to impune my word. Is this the tactic your political philosophy espouses when someone offers up a different point of view?
Funny, where I come from, honest debate and substantive dialogue are considered to be good things. Apparantly, that is not the practice here.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
For your benefit, Jack, I snapped a screenshot of my desktop, showing two windows. One has the Google search I conducted, the second shows the TruthOut page that contains the New York Times article.

But I get the picture. You're just out to discredit. Who knows, maybe this time you'll call me out as GWB's personal hit man; or perhaps I'm simply a dutiful pawn, spreading misinformation for my Emperor. Wait! Maybe I'm really Rush Limbaugh...

this started with me taking issue with seamsusduggery's use of the word hyperbole and the fact that his comments didn't take issue with what KO actually said. he has now at least made an honest attempt to point out what he disagrees with.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
but still, i think KO's reference to the Gettysburg Address was about bush's failure of leadership, not about some plot to keep the pit there, not hyperbole because, even if you disagree, it doesn't reach any threshold of gross exaggeration needed to call it that.
and he challenged "bought off" news media to attain this goal. with the armstrong williams affair for certain, and the misuse of video news releases the comment, at the very least, has some credibility, and therefor, not hyperbole.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
I have to concede that there are certainly things that disapoint if not anger me about Bush. He is not what I voted for in 2000 and 2004. I was originally a Steve Forbes supporter who threw in with Bush because I felt he represented my *over-all* political philosophy, though not on every point.
I am a little lost as to where I want to put my energy in the next presidential election, as I consider myself a small "c" conservative Libertarian.

Daaaamn! seamusduggery just got served!
enderwiggin82 5 years ago
And that's what it's all about. getting "served?"
I'll go Google the search criteria to see how much more crow I can be served, enderwiggin...
seamusduggery 5 years ago
And, frankly, are you more concerned with a dissenting poitn being "served," or the "real" truth?
The Core Question is: Is there a violation of procedural accountability regulation, or is there actually "fake, fraudulant" events being manufactured as propoganda? I think the evidence, if you see my earlier responses, points to the former.
Serve. Love.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
no that is NOT what the core question is. you may want to change it to that for your convineince but this was about your comment " He also charges that the Right has "bought off" news media to attain this goal." remember the video we were actually discussing?
also, Keith never said that bush had some goal or plan to keep the site like that. but that it was another failure of leadership.
and it is true they created fake news reports and bought off Armstrong Williams.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
or actually, if it makes any difference it would be more correct to say they paid him to take their views and state them as his own.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
I'm not looking for any sort of convenience, I am merely dialoguing. And I am well-aware of the topic at hand, but topics produce topics, and you rifle lots of question while answering very few posed.
And, yes, I DO believe that is the core issue., when you peel away all the layers.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
hes absolutely right and its a shame that no matter how much people like olbermann try to explain the truth, people will still ignore and take sides further worsening the situation

search "fake news" in google.
does the name armstrong williams ring a bell?
columnist paid by the whitehouse to spew education policy?
jackhammer111 5 years ago
At the beginning of this statement he does not introduce it as news, or investigative at all. He says "last comment", which means opinion in the news world, and he's entitled to it, and he doesn't have to PROVE anything that he says, although how can you dispute the fact that ground zero is still empty with no memorial?
thelioness1981 5 years ago
I haven't disputed the fact that this is his personal opinion. I have simply done what everyone else here has done by expressing my opinion regarding his statements.
I went on to ask for journalistic accountability on the claims he is making. Without it, his statements are no more factual than the docu-drama most of you just resisted. And on that basis, perhaps Keith's statements should be edited and censored. No double standards.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
I refuse to watch the docu-dramas, United 93, World Trade Center, etc.. As much as I won't forget the happenings on 9/11, I don't need the fabrication of fiction mixed in with the facts to where I can't remember what was real or not.
If you'd like to see proof, I don't know where you can turn. I do think that reporters have been boughten off.But I'm leanin towards conspiracy theory.
thelioness1981 5 years ago
what did i like?
the bit about squandering goodwill here and oversees after nine eleven.
the bit about getting something done at the site.
the bit about promising bi-partisan co-operation then trying to turn our government into one party rule.
the bit about the executive trying to brand critics of the war as " as morally or
intellectually confused, as appeasers, as those who, in the Vice President's words yesterday, "validate the strategy of the terrorists."
jackhammer111 5 years ago
Cite an example of the Bush Administration commissioning fake news. Again, rhetoric and political opinion donot count here. As you have asked of me, let's hear some facts and evidence.

From 2004:
US government faked Bush news reports
Chris Tryhorn
Tuesday March 16, 2004
TV news reports in America that showed President George Bush getting a standing ovation from potential voters have been exposed as fake, it has emerged.
I suggest you try Googling 'bush fake news'. You might be surprised. Then again I'll be surprised if you do.
ToledoNative 5 years ago
Hmmm... from what i am seeing so far in this Google search, there is a lot of talk about "pre-packaged" stories from the White House and other gevernmental stories, but nothing about "fake" stories.
I will concede that the "pre-packaged" "look like" (as the articles state) a violation of the "covert propoganda" regulations.
Still researching...
seamusduggery 5 years ago
It looks as if what is constituting "fake news," is only labled as such because it was filmed or recorded by governmental sources instead of "news media." The events "reported" are actual, real events, but in violation of the Office of Accountability's" regulations.
So the issue is not "fake events" being reported, it's stories produced about actual events by a governmental office as opposed to a news media outlet.
I concede to that point.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
with the lincoln thing, and throughout, he's calling attention to a sin of omission regarding the site.
the bush administration has commissioned fake news. did you not know this?
is that all ya got?
jackhammer111 5 years ago
I wholeheartedly agree with "hkl." Substantive commentary trumps passionate rhetoric any day, in my book.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
Let's argue his words... Olberman utilizes Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in an attempt to illustrate how Bush and the "Right" are preventing a memorial from being built at Ground Zero - his implication being that the Right wants the site kept as a "mass grave;" a scar on the landscape for photo ops. He also charges that the Right has "bought off" news media to attain this goal.
I ask: where is the substantive, researched fact? I'd like to see some proof, rather than Leftist HYPERBOLE.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
not all exaggerations are hyperbole. "I nearly died laughing," "I was hopping mad," and "I tried a thousand times." are. show me keith's.
again. this and mr "hkl. don't argue against his words.
olbermann is a complete class above roberts, will, or donaldson imop. will at least writes well.
it's refreshing to me to see keith be passionate because that's how i feel. we are witnessing a time of folly in executive leadership in this country that is unparalleled in American history.
jackhammer111 5 years ago
The day Mr Olbermann acquires the same coherence of argument and conciseness which Cokie Roberts, George Will and Sam Donaldson effortlessly display is the day he earns the respect of (at least some of) those who disagree with his conclusions.
Eloquence and passion do not amount to much when one simply rambles on, jumping from one point to another, in the same monologue. The only people you end up "convincing" are those who already agree with you (see the comments above for proof).
hkl 5 years ago
For the record: HYPERBOLE - n. - rhetoric; obvious and intentional exaggeration; to exceed; excess, exaggeration, throwing beyond
seamusduggery 5 years ago
Jackhammer111>> What is it about Olberman's commentary that makes you sing it's praise? Like everyone else above, I was commenting in-general as opposed to dissecting his statements.
And, yeah, "hyperbole" IS a cool word. And in this instance, wholly apt.

jackhammer111 5 years ago
Unabashed biased. Not a shread of objectivity, but, rather, pure, unadulterated, left Wing Fringe propagandist hyperbole. Why is MSNBC even considered a "journalistic" network, when it's unmitigated Left Wing bias governs it's overall slant on the news. MSNBC is as much a Leftist mouthpiece as the left accuses FoxNews of being for the Right Wing. Shameful commentary.
seamusduggery 5 years ago
what you guys call "objectivity" is just another word for humoring the terrormongers in the republican party. keith olbermann is awesome! and he's plainly making the right people mad. right-wingers won't be appeased anymore.
highway234 5 years ago
Actually, No. What I mean by "objectivity, is the ability to look beyond party affiliation and biased political propaganda.
What I mean by "objectivity," is stop pandering to the "impeach that fascist Bush" cult.
What i mean by "objectivity is "fact over hyperbole (a really cool word)."
seamusduggery 5 years ago
notice there's no argument against the facts in this (and most all) republican responses like like this
i just read it again. i don't see any hyperbole. maybe he just thinks it's a cool word.
same old sloganeering. "left wing bias" "leftist mouthpiece.
when we attack people like linbaugh or o'riely we can use there actually words against them.
this response is devoid of that.
