During the summer, these things love riding the thermals from the hills around our place. And that makes for some creepy events as you're laying out, a shadow spreads over you, you open your eyes, and one of these is floating silently 8 ft. above your face. Scares the shit out of you.

I've since discovered that there is a roost roughly 2 miles from where I was standing. A friend told me he sees them every morning on the way to work just before sunrise. This video was taken about 6 pm.

The Turkey Vulture roosts in large groups. It is possible you are close to a roosting spot. Is this late in the evening?
