I'm a gay man. Was just listening to "File Under Easy Listening" that I've owned since It's release in the early nineties. Decided to surf me some Bob Mould on YT. And low and behold, what are some of the first comments I see before the praise?.... The "OMG he's gay and I'm gonna be sick" crap! For those focused on the latter...check the dictionary for "Insecurity" and "Fair Weather Fan"..... Better yet - Just look in the mirror.
Husker Du utterly kicked ass. I too can't believe that anyone could even think that it's an issue who Bob Mould chooses to go to bed with, except inasmuch as now that he's more upfront about it, he seems to be happier - and good for him. His music has helped me so much in my life that all I want for him now is that he has a great life. If he keeps on making good stuff, so much the better, but there's already so much that I'm not worried.
Thanks Bob! Was in bands in Minneapolis, and there are 1000's of bands there now playing all types of music...Husker Du kinda paved the way for alt bands there...I thought the scene was fantastic
i won't buy into the homophobic stuff much, but think of this homophobs ( as any one knows homophobs are in fear of their own latent gayness) : if not for Bob there'd be no revival of the indie/alt alternative scence that could probably rewind to the Velvets. the du pre-ceeded early REM, then Nirvana, etc. and got NO recognition for blowing all those disgusting 'choose life' hair bands off the music scene. the man is owed a debt of gratitude.
does anyone seriously give a shit if he or anyone for that matter is gay in 2009? husker du were amazing and as a brit i'm totally gutted that they weren't one of ours. lol ps ive booked chartered trips for my funeral! best track ever in the whole of rockn roll
Ah yes, a dumb comment. I think I will reassess my life as I know it and control my need for comment so I can impress you with my intellectual prowess. Yes, he doesn't seem like a faggot. A poncy flamer with a lisp and a limp wrist. What's so dumb about that? The stereotype perhaps?
He dosen't seem like a hairy biker who hangs out down the Blue Oyster. It's nice to be reassured by stereotypes, isn't it? But don't worry I'm told he smells 'gay.'

That's odd. I scratched and sniffed my monitor and only smelled glass. Actually, I think most Bob Mould/Sugar/Husker Dű fans (like me) weren't surprised or don't give a damn. He still doesn't seem gay. In a light in the loafers Freddy Mercury/Elton John/George Michaels sort of way. Understand me now?
amazingly, a lot of gay people aren't the clown version you've been fed by CBS. they're gay PEOPLE, i think you've got it the other way, maybe?
not everyone who is straight is a rapist, football jock. I don't maybe I'm not getting what you're saying or where you're coming from, it just seems like a reverse closed mindedness.
Thx for the post. Bob's comments on influences may seem surprising now, but they shouldn't. The Ramones also saw themselves as "pop" and emulated 60's bubblegum. I interviewed Bob and HD for a local punk zine in '85 before a kick-ass gig in an Atlanta firetrap called 688, and they were all smart, friendly, and easy-going as Bob is here, very gracious to a local teenager. My then-editor is now drummer for Music Hates You. Dunno if he still has the tape. Would be interesting to hear it now.
@zeit69 true. but i like his acoustic stuff too. i mean i've got hearing problems just from listening to every single recording in all his incarnations the du, sugar, and solo that Bob has put out. notice the way people genaralize about how the great electric players play acoustic cos they're gettin' on. it's cos they've given their hearing up for us like Townsend for example.
If you notice at the beginning of the interview, you will notice Bob's AWA (American Wrestling Association) "cage-match" shirt. This was the local (Minneapolis) professional wrestling organization that I used to watch with my dad on Sunday mornings. Back then, pro-wrestling wasn't full of steroid freaks. Bob still loves pro-wrestling. Even tried to write for the WCW.
Hmm - has anyone ever seen them in the same room together? An interesting theory unravelling here. That'd explain why The Hold Steady are so damn good...
