If you're referring to the Taliban i n the eighties, at the time we were helping rid them of the Russians who were trying to take Afghanistan. Most of the groups the US backed were far better then the existing ones in power.
Iran on the other hand knowingly gives money to groups that have no problem with suicide attacks, using women and children as human shields, or other disgusting acts.
I would say there is a large difference between the two.
