@dougla63 What is the mas you are playing? How is it different from what other bands are playing? What is the story behind the mas? Because the dance does not show anything different from anyone else. This is all I'm saying. Mas' these days show a sexuality that doesn't really say anything real... it's all abstract. I know because I developed a curriculum to teach carnival to people who don't know about it. Prove to me that you're playing mas, and I will see things your way.

@PHEOLA1 The reason it is said that mas is not creative is because back in the days people mas' bands were very original. nowadays, all the bands are pretty much the same- bikini and beads. That's the reason why most men don't play mas' anymore. Back in the days, you saw things that were either going on in society or something historical when you looked at mas'. Now all you see is flesh. And it makes it hard to play an abstract mas like that.

@PHEOLA1 I'm glad you like the costumes. But is that ALL playin' mas' is... you put on a decorated bathing suit, and do the basics of soca dance? That is not what Carnival was meant to be... the creativity is dying out because it's cheaper to make a bikini and beads costume. There is no more ritual, or specific dance moves. There is no more transformation of masquerader or audience member. There is nothing that stays in the memory... nothing special... I could see those costumes anywhere.

@PHEOLA1 and as for soca and calypso being sexual... yes, some soca and calypso was sexual, but it was usually in the form of a story, and used double talk. Nowadays, you have a handful of artists who even possess the skill to disguise their words. i met a guy who swore he could sing soca because he could sing the words 'girl wine on me' . That's not all soca and calypso is supposed to be about. Some yes.... but not all. Thank God we still have calypsonians... but they will pass soon. Then what?

For all those who actually care to know... those women are not really playing 'mas'. They are doing social dances. They have no choice because the costumes they are wearing are abstract and really doesn't dictate a particular movement. This is why Trinidad carnival is no longer the greatest show on earth. It used to be because of the old time masquerades. But bands are too big and commercial now. The band leaders are not making any new, theatrical, or meaningful costumes. Short changing Trini.

Where could the greatest show be? Everything is commercial. There's no more creativity. trinidad should've been producing new characters and mas dances. Instead, it looks just like Brazil. Besides the people who play ole mas... Carnival is not something a spectator looks forward to. I'm just generalizing... it's not personal. I just think Trinidad has much more to offer... being that Carnival was fought for with blood, sweat, and tears.

I dont know what your talking about cUz Trinidad & Tobago Recognized As Island Of The Year a big part if that award is because of their carnival as well as the Caribbean's leading holiday destination. Trinidad carnival grew but it's still number one!

Trinidad's carnival is said to be number one. But it is no longer unique because there are no new characters being created. Nothing that really talks about what's going on in the society. that's what made it great before. now the majority of the bands are playing bikini and beads mas. But Brazil does that... and so does every other country that follows Trinidad's carnival aesthetic. Where are the new dances and rituals. I shouldn't be part of a band in which I didn't do the spiritual ritual.

really study Trinidad's carnival past... and re-enact in your mind at least... the struggle and the triumphs of our anscestors. Then you understand what Trinidad's masquerade is really about. You understand why the Trinity of Carnival has been lost. Then you will see why Trinidad's carnival is not greatest show on earth anymore. It's just one more show like the rest. It's time to revive it.... not accept what it has become.

Brian MacFarlane's presentation this year actually was a reflection of "ole time mas" in Trinidad. In an interview he did say not in these words, but the quality of the mas has gone down.

I'll blame it on the younger generation wanting to be more sexy and look pretty. The ole time mas is still there, but not as much as before. Pretty mas is in and sadly at the expense of the history and standard of Carnival.

I agree. But my big beef with Trini carnival is that on Tuesday, you should see new characters being portrayed... not abstract bikini and beads. Even with the less clothes they could still make characters that tell a story just by watching them. What's going to happen soon is people who are not from Trinidad are going to make their carnivals better to attend, and Trini carnival will lose it's flavor. It's no fun to watch anymore- only play... not everyone can afford that.

@ccb167 it was obviously a choreographed dance. That wasn't my point. My point is that if you guys were playing an actual masquerade, you would be doing the movements that de mas dictates. All I saw was one or two basics put into an order, and danced to whatever. Or course tourists will come... but soon, mas bands will be more tourists than Trinis, and they will think that 'that' is all there is to Carnival dancing... but in reality, Carnival dance has the potential to be infinite.

@dougla63 you don't get what I'm saying. Let me put it another way. i work with someone who doesn't know what carnival used to be like. He told me he thought Carnival looked just like a bunch of Las Vegas showgirls. It wasn't until I explained the history of Carnival that he realized there was much more to it than bikini and beads mas. Now, we've created a whole curriculum to teach carnival to people who don't know about it.
