  • @boeing7372

Get your facts straight...SWA pilots are paid by the hour! I know!

  • Don't encourage or discourage the use of regional airlines altogether...You're still safe.

Other than that you did an amazing job proving your point and finding the facts.

    Kudos

  • great video your completley correct but it is still just as safe as a regualar airline.

  • Quite a few errors in your video. But thank you for taking time to discuss this issue. That PBS video was so far from the truth we all want to puke who live in the 121 world of aviation. Pretty simple people die heads must roll.. America demands it. Have you looked what Colgan has done since the crash? Expanded bigger than they have ever been. More planes more 200 hour pilots who cant get on anywhere else. Great Lakes! AMAZING STICKS no autopilot. Ill put my family on GL any day of the week.

  • @batlinbear Every word I said was accurate and true and MANY have said that I told their story as well. GLA is the sorriest excuse of an airline in America. You'll have no problem getting the tickets because they sell them even if the flights can't be made for lack of a crew. THAT is documented. Irowood-Gogebic has now said good bye and good ridance to this trash and we on area are thrilled. Good luck to you and yours..

  • @batlinbear Thank thank thank you!!! I'm glad you too recognized that there were absurd exaggerations and errors in both videos. "Pilots don't get paid if the airplane diverts..." are you kidding me? What a bunch of BS! Southwest pays their pilots by the trip, not by the hour - which means they are encouraged to keep things rolling on time - is that a crime now too? Oye, this frustrates me....

  • problem is you can't go to majors without at least 1500 hours experience, but from what pilots tell me, they either got in with 7000+ hours on their own time in 20 years, or they were fighter/tanker/bomber pilots in the AF/Navy. Regionals is where new pilots start and within 5 years they have gained appx. 4000-5000 hours, than they move to the majors.

and i can go for hours on the wrong things the regionals do, but it all depends on how much the customer is willing to pay.

  • @Sharod101 We just got the good news that GLA is out of the picture now for our area and we're getting a new carrier. I'm thrilled and hope the new airline will do the job as well as Midwest Connect did when they were here. Thanks for your comment.

  • @simplecommentary no problem. i also want to add that Experience shouldn't be held up to such a high standard, in the the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, pilots for Tankers, Fighter Jets, Helicopters and UAV's are assigned and licensed to fly their aircrafts with literally 500+ hours, and thats how its been for a long time, and its going great for them.

there should be a required amount of hours yes, but hours shouldn't be held against pilots and their pay/position so strictly.

  • @Sharod101 I researched this pretty well and agree with you. I was shocked to learn of the low pay and working conditions these folks have to deal with. Thanks again.

  • (cont) I am not saying that you are wrong, just that the source you were quoting misrepresented the facts.

Also, regarding pilot pay: I would love to have made $21,000 last year. My wife and I laughed when we opened my W2 and it said I only brought home $8649.18 for 2009 as an FO for GLA. So I really had a good laugh when the President of the RAA stated that finding a $50.00 hotel should be no problem.

  • Thank you for your informative reply. I do appreciate it. However, if you watch the video I referred to you will see that the same pilotwas later given the resposibilty of instructing "new" pilots in a new aircraft that he'd never flown. Management really is lacking at GLA. I truly feel for you pilots... Thanks again for your reply.

  • I'd like to make another comment on your video. I appreciate you making this video because you are trying to understand the hardships the regional pilots are facing and trying to getting the info out to the public.

Regarding the Captain in the video who upgraded with only 500 hours, at a minimum he would have had 1500 hrs as required by law. The video misrepresented this, when realistically the number he was stating was probably 500 hours in that particular aircraft.

  • It's sad what the industry has come to. People have to die in order for changes to be made. The real problem is upper management of airlines persuading the FAA to turn a blind eye to major safety problems just to make a quick buck. As of now the only people with power are the ones with deep pockets.

Simplecommentary thanks for sheding light on the subject.

    Zach

  • Thanks Zach. The video I referred to also says that the FAA does not just regulate safety but is also responsible for "promoting" the airlines. This is a huge conflict of interest that the public should be aware of. Thanx again for commenting.

  • Flying Cheap...

Duluth - Delta Connection flights operated by Compass, Pinnacle, and Mesaba.

Wausau - Delta Connection flights by Mesaba - American Eagle by American Eagle

Iron Mountain and Escanaba - Delta connection flights by Mesaba

    Ironwood - independent airline GLA

Marquette - Delta Connection and American Eagle

Green Bay - some Delta flights - the rest are regional partners

Minneapolis and Chicago are the nearest "Mainline"

All airlines are driven by profit over safety....

  • FACTS:

    16 Hours Max Duty Day

8 Schedule Hours Flight Time per 24 Hours

1500 Flight Hours Total Time or more to be a Captain

24 Hours Off in 7 Consecutive days

    100/120 Flight Hours per Month

    1000/1200 Flight Hours per Year

The airline industry (labor) was failed by the Labor Act of 1936 - you need to lobby Congress and the President to change this - but, you have to remember, with these changes you will pay a higher fare for airline tickets... are you willing?

  • Personally I'm going to drive further AND pay more just to NOT flyGLAl. So, you bet! I'd pay more for a safe flight that actually takes off when scheduled. When our little airport was serviced by Midwest Connect we never had problems. The biggest problem is GLA management, not simply regional airlines. Thanx for commenting.

  • @Flynsk8r It doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive. A lot of the money is sucked up to pay for the executive compensation and bonuses. Those at the top suck all the pennies for themselves.
