I knew this trick a while back. You're right though, it's not the trick, its the presentation. The most effective performance I have ever done with this trick it was at an 18th birthday party, and I was pretending to be drunk. I kept forcing the same card to the bottom, or to the top (occasionally I did a variation of this trick where it is on top) and I pretended I didn't know what was going on.
