I don't think that Mario should retire, Although i do think that they should stop creating the mario classic games such as 'mario galaxy'. Whereas the more innovative games such as 'Mario Kart' should carry being made because these game will appeal to people no matter how much graphics and gameplay is improving on other games.

Although I havent enjoyed Mario since the Snes there is no doubt he is the king of video games. He is a big draw and so many people still enjoy the games and I for one would love my children and the next generation to be able to play mario.

Also, just btw, there's no such thing as "Mario Brawl"; the game series is called Super Smash Brothers, the most recent one is called Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Nothing to do with the Mario question.

Like other people have said...I just can't see nintendo retiring mario anytime soon. Also, I think that it is interesting that the author used mickey mouse as an example. I have a feeling that most people have never seen/have no knowledge of the original mickey mouse and are only acquainted with him in terms of disney marketing nowadays. While nintendo has created many new games featuring mario I still think that they are able to keep some of the original game's aesthetics. hmm I don't know...

In any games store Mario donimates the top 10 chart, there's no way he should go. Nintendo + Mario are synonymous - it would be like having Fish without Chips, Blasphemy!

Mario Kart on the N64 is one of my favourte games even now, when it came out on Wii it proved how timeless he is - the characters and environments will appeal to kids who didnt grow up in the 80s and I am sure the "Wii" generation will recall their Mario Kart experience with just as much nostalgia in 20 years as we do now.

as long as Nntendo keep doing a great job regenerating and rejuvenating the franchise as well as they have this time round for each furute console (I adored seeing the new Wii worlds etc, even though part of the fun was my familiarity with the original, if i had happened upon Mario for the first time on the mdern systems I feel he would still prove a powerful character contender, even in the face of movie adaptations etc) i see no reason why Mario should ever retire =)

I think as long as Shigeru Miyamoto is still developing and designing games for Nintendo, Mario will always be there and should not retire. I have so many great memories of Mario, but as I no longer play video games, my views may not be as valid as someone more involved in today's console market.

I agree with most of the comments so far. I think one main Mario game every console is fine, but Nintendo using the character in every other game does saturate the market. Especially all of the sports games and to a lesser extent Mario Kart and Smash Bros. The one genre I'd like to see more of is the Paper Mario RPGs; those were excellent. Even then one per console cycle is more than enough.

I read a comment on a forum about how Sega should take a break from churning out Sonic games each year.

The person who made the comment mentioned that Doctor Who had gotten stale, thus they took a break from it, before reintroducing it to the public.

So, hmm. I don't entirely know. Maybe Mario should take a break kinda like that or something.

I think that the gaming industry has far surpassed Mario...Todays gamers prefer a realistic game with realistic graphics and gameplay....Ive always been a playstation fan, not so much nintendo...so my answer is somewhat biased..but its my opinion never the less...yes i do think that Mario should retire, and not only Mario but just about all of the arcady looking nintendo games...They may be loved by older adults and little kids...but im 22 and it just aint my cup of tea.........

I definitely think that the games he's most associated with, smash and kart, are too similar between platforms and it's getting played. I think smash is played out, but with some real innovation in the battle section kart could keep going. To me mario stands for a fun and goofy sect of gaming, what is almost the last of its kind in a sea of first person shooters which are also all the same tbh. Nintendo reinvented the console, now they need to reinvent games, if not characters.

Nintendo rely way to much on Mario, so it's unlikely they'll give him up. In my opinion Mario games are past their best and he should retire while he's still somewhat popular. As the article said, he's an old school icon; he doesn't really belong in the current console generation.
