mario needs to back to 2d platform games ,imagine how huge a game they could make if they went back to old school mario,3d mario just isnt as good imo, galaxy was ok,but i still play mario allstars on the snes if i want to play a mario game *****MARIO 3 IS STILL AWSOME !! ***
NO mario is a classic he is the father of all modern video games he was the first video game with a real story tied into it but he needs to slow down some of his games are juzt plain wierd but no!!!!!!! mario will never retire
Be honest mate , Mario is a legend , And as mario kart , It would not be mario kart if it did not have karts , It would not be smash brothers , If you did not get your favourite nintendo characters , And fight , My opinuion
I don't think that Mario should retire, Although i do think that they should stop creating the mario classic games such as 'mario galaxy'. Whereas the more innovative games such as 'Mario Kart' should carry being made because these game will appeal to people no matter how much graphics and gameplay is improving on other games.
Although I havent enjoyed Mario since the Snes there is no doubt he is the king of video games. He is a big draw and so many people still enjoy the games and I for one would love my children and the next generation to be able to play mario.
Nintendo would never retire Mario; he's the mascot. It would be dumb.
Also, just btw, there's no such thing as "Mario Brawl"; the game series is called Super Smash Brothers, the most recent one is called Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Nothing to do with the Mario question.
Like other people have said...I just can't see nintendo retiring mario anytime soon. Also, I think that it is interesting that the author used mickey mouse as an example. I have a feeling that most people have never seen/have no knowledge of the original mickey mouse and are only acquainted with him in terms of disney marketing nowadays. While nintendo has created many new games featuring mario I still think that they are able to keep some of the original game's aesthetics. hmm I don't know...
In any games store Mario donimates the top 10 chart, there's no way he should go. Nintendo + Mario are synonymous - it would be like having Fish without Chips, Blasphemy!
Mario Kart on the N64 is one of my favourte games even now, when it came out on Wii it proved how timeless he is - the characters and environments will appeal to kids who didnt grow up in the 80s and I am sure the "Wii" generation will recall their Mario Kart experience with just as much nostalgia in 20 years as we do now.
as long as Nntendo keep doing a great job regenerating and rejuvenating the franchise as well as they have this time round for each furute console (I adored seeing the new Wii worlds etc, even though part of the fun was my familiarity with the original, if i had happened upon Mario for the first time on the mdern systems I feel he would still prove a powerful character contender, even in the face of movie adaptations etc) i see no reason why Mario should ever retire =)
Yes, mario can do a lot of things now. He has come a long way from being a plummer. Im sure his resume would be very impressive. Mario can be placed in almost any situation and it makes him almost ageless
I think as long as Shigeru Miyamoto is still developing and designing games for Nintendo, Mario will always be there and should not retire. I have so many great memories of Mario, but as I no longer play video games, my views may not be as valid as someone more involved in today's console market.
Nintendo will always be re-inventing gaming. They are getting quite smart at game design these days. Mario Galaxy is amazing!! As for retirerment... no. :0)
I agree with most of the comments so far. I think one main Mario game every console is fine, but Nintendo using the character in every other game does saturate the market. Especially all of the sports games and to a lesser extent Mario Kart and Smash Bros. The one genre I'd like to see more of is the Paper Mario RPGs; those were excellent. Even then one per console cycle is more than enough.
I think a break could be good as long it aint too long otherwise like the article says it would be a shame if the next generation of gamers dont know Mario.
I think that the gaming industry has far surpassed Mario...Todays gamers prefer a realistic game with realistic graphics and gameplay....Ive always been a playstation fan, not so much nintendo...so my answer is somewhat biased..but its my opinion never the less...yes i do think that Mario should retire, and not only Mario but just about all of the arcady looking nintendo games...They may be loved by older adults and little kids...but im 22 and it just aint my cup of tea.........
I think so too, I love Nintendo and I love Sony Playstation. I agree Mario could survive if they could head down what playstation has done for their games while keeping the nintendo element.
I definitely think that the games he's most associated with, smash and kart, are too similar between platforms and it's getting played. I think smash is played out, but with some real innovation in the battle section kart could keep going. To me mario stands for a fun and goofy sect of gaming, what is almost the last of its kind in a sea of first person shooters which are also all the same tbh. Nintendo reinvented the console, now they need to reinvent games, if not characters.
I agree reinvent Mario for todays generation, I have seen a game where the first in the series was for the young then they realised their audience was getting so they aimed their sequel for an older audience who remember the first game.
Does a computer generated character have integrity to protect? Was he not designed for nintendo to whore out all over the world? Not a gamer, so my opinion might be biased.
Mario is a legend! Mario Kart on the SNES is my favourite game of all time and I still play it now! I bought a SNES on eBay last year just so I could keep playing it
ok, in my opinion. i think that the mario games for the time being are really just that they are improving upone em each time they make it for a new system, there is always new features and what not. but yeas i do think they could cut back alittle. but if the money IS in mario it would prolly be dumb to stop. litarally everyonr i know that has a wii and gamecube have all the mario games. so they obviously do still make money.
Nintendo rely way to much on Mario, so it's unlikely they'll give him up. In my opinion Mario games are past their best and he should retire while he's still somewhat popular. As the article said, he's an old school icon; he doesn't really belong in the current console generation.
i dont think Mario should retire, i think they sould do like what you said about Micky Mouse, they should fade him out a little and create new and very different characters but still keep it so that nintendo are well known for Mario. :)
They should cut the sports and all the other crap and just use Mario main games
Even though Mario Kart Wii and Brawl are great but games like that should step back and Mario should be come a once a year very main Icon in one game each year.
Mario games are still fun!! Why would they stop making good, fun games just to make a legacy. Mario doesn't have to be a thing of the past when he still makes the gaming world even better now.
I reckon that they shouldnt just stop all of a sudden, just stop making as many games with him in it, but still make some like one a year, and then inabout 7-10 years time just stop.
I think that the points are valid, but Mario is a classic video game character like the little black dress is to fashion. It never goes out of style, but it does go under some changes as the years progress. But no, mario shouldn't retire.
No, he shouldn't. They need to start aiming their games to the hardcore gamers and just take a step back from what they're doing. They need to stop coming out with games like mario baseball and mario football and go back to their older style.
the begining kind of looks like something you would see on your pip-boy

Hey,
Interesting vid. I think that Mario should retire. But with a bang! It's better to go out with a bang then to fizzle out.
Although I'm pretty sure Nintendo won't get rid of him. If they do they will phase it out which aint good.

Hmm... there's lots of valid points here.
I read a comment on a forum about how Sega should take a break from churning out Sonic games each year.
The person who made the comment mentioned that Doctor Who had gotten stale, thus they took a break from it, before reintroducing it to the public.
So, hmm. I don't entirely know. Maybe Mario should take a break kinda like that or something.
