Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh I have to disagree. I think the dark world map theme gave a sense of despair. The world is pretty much destroyed and Kefka won. You walk out to the over world realizing you lost pretty much everyone. Life seems to be inhabitable due to the fact everything around you is in ruin. It's a catastrophe and with that song I think that can bring up the greatest feeling of sadness and despair.
@craftmatic2 Well, the SNES wasn't capable of that. Even if it was, the result might have been even worse quality than this. Just go look up some remixes and modern arrangements of this.
ToP never made it to the SNES, only the S Famicom. Close enough I suppose, but back then all we wanted was the SNES version. But obtaining a SF and the cart, is close enough.
i never ever would have classified this song as sad, the "stupid" singing ruins it for me. Im a huge Nobuo Uematsu fan, but this particular song (in original format) isnt sad. The orchestrated version is fantastic, but celes's them is more sad than this.
@TheSnesMusic , sure it was never released in America neither in Europe, but thankfully somebody translated so we can play that awesome game on emulator ! but when i think about it again maybe it shouldnt been on First place at least 2-5 somewhere =)
@TheSnesMusic Wow...ToP WAS made for the snes first for your information...Damn man -.-...dint release abroad japan cos Playstation was high around that time .
@TheSnesMusic well... ToP is actually for the SNES... used to play it awefully often. Loved the challenge in this game since it wasnt that easy after a certain point anymore.
@swordinademonskull The SNES is only in Western Culture. He would have to change his name to TheSuperFamiconMusic. And according to this: "Tales of Phantasia was the first Super Famicom game to be 48MBit in size, and was also the first to feature streamed audio voices, made possible by sound programmer Hiroya Hatsushiba." It has an unfair advantage in cartridge size.
@TheSnesMusic ToP IS on the SNES lol. It was released on SNES, PSX, and GBA. You can emulate it, buy it on a repro cart, or get a flash cart like the SNES Powerpak. Personally, I can't stand emulation, and don't wanna shell out the coin. So I bought an SNES Powerpak. =D
Thank you for your superb lists of SNES music. This was simply the time when music in games really sounded like game music and delivered the atmosphere.
That is one of the reasons why the SNES is so amazing.
I thought you did a great job with your lists and chose wisely. Of course you are always going to get criticism, 'cause everybody experiences games and their music differently.
Here's my two cents: I'm really missing music from Terranigma, particularly on this list. Like "Elle's Theme"
@DinoRave888 I think a lot of this song sounds like pieces of the FFVII overworld theme and some of Aerith's theme. But better.

My God I wish they could get rid of that MIDI voice ruining it and replace it with an actual girl singing.
It hurts to hear the MIDI....
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghhhh.
Worst music in the entire game when it should have been among the best.

@DinoRave888 you mean Aerith's theme sounds like the beginning of this song. Because this song came first.

I wouldn't exactly call the Opera scene sad...

This is the saddest? I mean, it's up there....but no way this is above the Celes theme from FFVI imo
