In response to everyone who has made negative comments about the early work from Alanis...You have to start some place and no Alanis was not exactly happy with this stuff as she started to change her style, but people, it is a part of the growth process as a musician....and I will give kudos to Alanis...she was only doing what was popular in the years of 1990/91/92/93
You know what? I hate this style of music with a passion. I just do, my opinion, I don't ever force it down anyone else's throat. BUT, she can take it and make it good. I grew up in a period when all I listened to was Black sabbath, metallica and Guns n Roses. I never figured I'd be jamming this loud in here. But I have always deeply respected her, and she had so much sadness hidden away, eventually, it had to come out in later albums. That made no sense, but shit, this woman is God.
AAlanis IS genius, period. During this "phase", I feel that she was not allowed to be her true self. She, no doubt, has a great voice; however, this type of music is simply not her. Now she is expressive and her true self/voice comes out. She truly has a gift from God and I love her music.
the creative middle ground you want is "Flavors Of Entanglement" whicvh Alanis herself has said is an album she could see "pop alanis" doing as a comeback. it's got the heartfelt lyrics Alanis wants to writes but the soaring. studio perfect vocal layering and pop sheen that Guy Sigsworth offered. just listen to a track like "Giggling Again For No Reason:" or "Tapes" her singing is mindblowing and wonderful and better than ever
FAB track! This song has been the inspiration for a lot of modern ballads if you listen closely. Plus, she did not get dropped, her contract expired, that is something different...
It can't be denied that her earlier music was less than inspired, but it also can't be denied that she sacrificed much of her talent as a vocalist during her transition, and isn't as good a singer anymore.
I wish Alanis could have found some sort of creative middle ground - inspired lyrics along with perfect vocals.
I have to take back what I said above after having listened to her post-SFIJ material. The unpleasant qualities present in JLP and - to a greater extent - SFIJ are virtually absent in those albums.
I do not think some of you understand Alanis......I read on comment on the " Real Alanis".....I will be happy to give ya folks insight here, being a HUGE fan of hers, I am only 3 months and 18 days to the tee younger than her.....Alanis hates this era in her life....that is what some of Jagged Little Pill and some of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is about.....u really need to see her Behind The Music VH1 did
yes the music is good, that is because Alanis was eager to please her record company and producer...but she hates it because it is not the music she wanted to do, she hates doing songs about false relationships, she likes her lyrics based on reality and events in her life
Are you saying she's only a good singer when she's trying to please other people? ; )
Anyway ... No one forced her to write superficial songs. She should have been more open in her music when she began her career in earnest. It's her own fault that her early songs came out the way they did.
Yes but if she'd done that then there's a good chance she would have been dropped before Jagged Little Pill etc.. could have even been made. It was the same with pink yano.. she doesn't even count her first album as one of hers at all.
I don't see how writing an inspired song instead of an uninspired one would have gotten her dropped. Most listeners (and producers) wouldn't have given a damn one way or the other as long as it would sell.

I still think NITT is her best album, though.

The "real" Alanis. What does that even mean?
Life changes people. Who she was then may not be who she is now, but that doesn't mean she wasn't any less "real" then.
(For the record, this is the best song I've heard from her.)
