I just think what a shame to lose such a talented musician so young. The heights he could have reached. KISS would have been better if they let their bandmates contribute more. RIP Eric. We will not forget you.
good song,it s disappoinding that browsing on youtube i always end up finding a good kiss song that i don t know why they didn t release,i ve found five or six songs so far that i think would have mde animalize or crazy nights better albums
Just finished reading his new book eric carr.He was treated very badly by simmons and stanley whilst he was in kiss but unforgivingly when he was battling his illness,He will never be forgotten one of the best drummers ever.To a true legend R.I.P.
He was a great songwriter and Gene and Paul should have given him a chance. I feel they were jealous, especially Paul Stanley. Eric had so many talents and he was a gentle and giving soul. The others treated him disrespectfully.
It was his birthday on the 12th. He would have been 61 years old. He (in my opinion) is the greatest drummer of all time! I was very upset when he wasn't even listed on Rolling Stones Top 100 Drummers of All Time...
Eric Carr was and will always be my inspiration and the sol reason that I became a drummer! As my tribute to him and kiss, I have the four iconic faces tattooed on my ankle, Eric, Paul, Gene, and Ace!
Too bad Gene and Paul didn't let Eric sing on more songs. He was definitely the best drummer they've had, although I always preferred the 4 original members. But like everyone knows KISS was and will always Gene and Pauls band.
Eric Carr was one of the greatest drummers to EVER sit behind a kit. As awesome as the 80's scene was, Eric was a driving force in the 80's and for my money, THE reason the 80's rocked!!
Utter disgrace this was rejected for H.I.T.S!!!! Shits on anything on that album by a mile!!!! RIP ERIC :) Hope you are playing ths up there in heaven .....still kicking ass!!!
@dartheric It is and it isn't. Eric and Bruce recorded the basic tracks intending the song for Hot In The Shade. It's pretty much just them - just like, "Little Caesar," was. It may not be an official KISS song, but it sure is an unofficial one.
KISS rejected this song because it would have been the best song on hot in the shade right after forever....this song kicks more ass than anything on that album.....Eric was amazing...what a talent....
@DEADSTARRADIO Well said and so true! They could have taken a song off there with keyboard shit in it and put this one in. Gene or Paul must not want to share the spotlight too much. It makes me wonder how many good songs Ace and/or Peter handed in that were rejected too that Gene wants to keep hidden in the vault.
cause this song has the lyrics when lightning strikes in it im sure tommy got the idea for the song from this one it has the same kick 0:44-0:53 is where the lyrcs when lightning strikes is first yelled
its eric people! gene always had a growl to his vocals and you'd hear it if he sang it, yes there were songs that it didn't show, but w this song, so much power into the vocals, gene's growl would have shown. Eric had a smooth voice, kinda like tommy thayer has now. listen to when lightning strikes, its the same deal.
Ridiculous that this tune didn't make it onto a proper KISS record. It certainly kicked most if not all of the material on HITS. I have a feeling control/jealously (Gene/Paul) was the culprit. Hell, if the issue was Eric singing two cuts on the record, I could hear Gene singing the tune, or even dumping "Little Caesar" from the record in favor of this song.
This is such a pity they didn't put this song in the Hot in the shade album. He was indeed very talented!! I really like this song. Eric you are really missed!
I deffiantely agree that this song should have been on "Hot in the Shade". Contrairy to popular belief, 'Hot In the Shade" has some damn good stuff in it. Personally, I would regard this album as one of the most underrated albums of all time because it's got some heavy stuff on it, deffinately their 2nd-best album without makeup (the best being "Revenge"). I would consider Eric Carr the best drummer for KISS. He was heavy but very intricate. He was a well-rounded player, and damn good too!
@SonicThunderBYG - agree with your assessment of HITS, it has been largely overlooked by the fans (mainly due to the god awful mixing/mastering of the record IMO). "Betrayed" and "You Love Me to Hate You" are two cuts that compare to any KISS rocker past or present. Great thoughts on Eric C. too.
ERIC CARR was a bad ass drummer, he blows away the "Catman" & Singer! Carr looked crazy with his fox costume! He tore it up every nite 4 KISS! Gene & Paul dogged him thru out his tenure w/the band. I truely miss U CARR!!! This is a cool song, 2 bad it wasn't on the H.I.T.S. album! Check out Little Caesar!
eric carr was and is the man.great song should have been on hot in the shade. but lets face it paul and gene run the show you think eric singer has a say hahahaha they even tell him how to play he has no control if he told paul and gene anyhing they could fire him and replace him so face his head would spin they dont give a fuck its all about money to them.
@B5Erik .. IDK .. to me it sounds like Gene .. but not .. ya savy?
I love Eric .. just met Bruce last night ..Great guy! I meet alot of "Celebrities" in what I do and he was easily one of the coolest! Kiss lost me when Eric Passed ~ and I absolutely agree. Kiss' best drummer and sorely missed by me .. R~I~P ERIC
arcane.bobs: Duke of Rock from XXCultradio just wanting you to know we play 59 yrs of Rock, including this song. Thanks for paying tribute. We think all Rock should be free, and videos like yours keep it that way.
Great Song! Yes, Gene & Paul should have used this song on one of their album's. Again, Gene & Paul are in CONTROL and they don't want nothing taken away from them. It's bad enough they had the ball's to let Eric Singer & Tommy Thayer dress in Peter's & Ace's Character And. also have Tommy sing "Shock Me", the way Ace played it live. I did get a chance amd speak to Eric Carr back in the 80's. I've met him at a club at a club in Queens. Eric took time to speak to all of us, R.I.P. Eric.
Face it the real reason this wasn't on the record is that Gene & Paul wouldn't have gotten the royalties for it. Unless they get their greedy paws on it they won't use it.
That was always Peter's and Ace's biggest complaint about KISS. Their music never made the records.
Hmmm...I'm sort of curious here about your "greedy paws" statement of Gene/Paul~When Peter released his solo album, it's my understanding that his album so the least out of any member of KISS~Furthermore, after Peter left the band, he's had a few solo albums he's released without much success~Now, wouldn't Peter's album be all of his own material and if so, why didn't that sell hundreds of thousands of copies? Let's make the muddy waters clear here...Peter is not a writer, Gene/Paul are, thanks!
KISS received 3/4 of Peter's first two alnums after he left KISS. This is why Ace waited 3 years to release his first solo work. As per solos, Peter's still sold 1.3 million copies in the US alone; hardly a failure.
Most of his solo works have been cowritten by Stan Penridge. He sued KISS because he was never paid his royalties (he died but his family has continued the suit.)
I suggest you look up Jennilee if you want to hear Peter at his best, or Blue Moon Over Brooklyn.
They should've used this song AND "LC" on "HITS" to replace "Read My Body" and Cadillac Dreams." That would've made the album quite a bit better. Too bad Paul and Gene are control freaks and don't want anyone showing them up.
@B5Erik That they rejected it for hot in the shade, and picked songs like love's a slap in the face, king of hearts and somewhere between heaven and hell instead, is unbelivable.
This an unfinished Demo Released for all of his fans....if you were one of those fans then you would know that this is an unpolished DEMO...Thats why it's sounds like one...Get up to speed people
Great song! Gee, thanks Paul & Gene for not including this gem on a KISS album. Idiots. This blows away a good portion of KISS tunes.
If this was a demo from HITS, then this probably would have been the best tune on the album, barnone. Gene & Paul still need those royalty checks though. (sarcasm)
They are a lot of fucking songs that should have been on KISS records that weren't. It's My Life should have been on Psycho Circus. Sword and Stone shouldve been on Crazy Nights. It goes on and on.
"It's My Life" was written for "Creatures", G&P didn't think it fit with other songs. I agree, but they could have shitcanned any of Gene's songs on "Animalize." Gene doesn't have 1 good song on that LP.
@Sirscorps Maybe that's because Gene was too caught up in an acting career to show up.
KISSFAQ says it all: "Because Gene was busy filming his movie 'Runaway,' he quickly completed his material for the album and left Paul to finish... As a result Gene finds himself minimally represented on the album, similar to the musical performances on 'Dynasty.'"
....1st let me say, Ive been a long time Kiss fan...... anyway....this is no masterpiece...but in all honesty, this sounds A LOT better than a lot of the questionable stuff that made it on to the 80's and 90's Kiss albums...why they didn't realese this is a bit strange...
I'm sure it was because with Gene and Paul as producers (final say as to what goes on the album), they figured they already threw Eric a 'bone' with Little Caesar.
This is definitely, in my opinion, better than 'Love is Like a Slap in the Face' or 'Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell'.
My apologies to anyone who loves those songs, just my opinion.
"HITS" was an average. G&P probably didn't want to know how good some of Eric's songs were. Even though "Little Ceaser" is a little bit more than the motown song, "Ain't That Peculiar", it's still better than 11 other songs on that album. This is a killer tune.
The Rockology Disc is essential, for this track alone. The rest of the disc is hit or miss demos and tunes for Rockheads. What really should happen is a KISS endorsed Eric Carr album featuring great tracks that never made an album. When I hear stuff like this I just don't get holding this guy back, in favor of say some of Gene's lesser moments on Asylum, Crazy Nights, & Hot in The Shade. Eric really could have been a shot in the arm when Gene was paying more attention to acting.
is this eric singing lead vocals, wow i did ask him this question if he would ever sing lead vocals or any kiss songs in the future his answer"You never Know" then Gene laughed @paul and then they all smiled @ me then we shook hands, this was in 1984 @radio city music hall nyc, peter criss was there backstage..that was a night i will never forget..till we meet in heaven my brother..
That's incorrect. Read the liner notes written by Bruce Kulick on Rockology. The last four songs on Rockology were written for the Rockheads, but all of the rest of the songs on Rockolgy were written for KISS (or other bands if Paul & Gene rejected the songs, which they often did).
i met him @ the country club in reseda ca. for a warm-up gig prior to hot in the shade, i saw him in the parking lot walking towards the venue, he was holding two large bags (one in each hand) and was walking rather fast, i walked up to him and said "hi". He kept walking and said hi very quickly. i felt VERY bummed out. Then he must have noticed how i felt, because he stopped, walked back and talked to me for a while. WHAT A COOL GUY, I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.
Awesome how this sounds like a Def Leppard song

They should've used this song AND "LC" on "HITS" to replace "Read My Body" and Cadillac Dreams." That would've made the album quite a bit better. Too bad Paul and Gene are control freaks and don't want anyone showing them up.
Sirscorps 2 years ago
Is this Eric on Lead vocals or Simmons...?? I can't tell?? Good tune , they never should have bumped it off!
stingray1964 2 years ago
Gene had nothing to do with this song - other than foolishly rejecting it (along with Paul) when it was submitted for Hot In The Shade.

Damn...what idiots! They were probably threatened..it's a REAL good song.
thx, dude....RIP Eric.
stingray1964 2 years ago
@B5Erik That they rejected it for hot in the shade, and picked songs like love's a slap in the face, king of hearts and somewhere between heaven and hell instead, is unbelivable.

Hot in the shade was kind of lame.
this would have been a good song to add to it.
Dont get me wrong I like rise to it, Hide your heart & several other songs.

Great song , thanks for posting.

Eric Carr actually died of cancer. Paul and Gene had nothing to do with his death. They were actually there with him in the hospital.

This an unfinished Demo Released for all of his fans....if you were one of those fans then you would know that this is an unpolished DEMO...Thats why it's sounds like one...Get up to speed people
nywilf 2 years ago
No, it's a FINISHED demo. Bruce Kulick finished it himself (by adding the solo that they never got around to back in '89 and then mixing the song).
And the production on this thing sounds better than anything on HITS.
B5Erik 2 years ago 3

It goes on and on.
slang51 2 years ago 2
"It's My Life" was written for "Creatures", G&P didn't think it fit with other songs. I agree, but they could have shitcanned any of Gene's songs on "Animalize." Gene doesn't have 1 good song on that LP.
Sirscorps 2 years ago 4
true! less gene songs means better songs of the band. Paul's songs are better usually...
TitanstarDH 2 years ago 5
I know but they recorded it again for PC with Ace singing the final verse.
slang51 2 years ago
@Sirscorps Maybe that's because Gene was too caught up in an acting career to show up.
KISSFAQ says it all: "Because Gene was busy filming his movie 'Runaway,' he quickly completed his material for the album and left Paul to finish... As a result Gene finds himself minimally represented on the album, similar to the musical performances on 'Dynasty.'"

The intro lick is a bit awkward, as I've never heard a 1-2 (natural)-1-4 progression to start a riff.
That said, it's completely original and lends a heavy tone.
The song as a whole is damn good.
Sing-a-long bridge to chorus sections and definitely sounds like a proverbial bridge linking the H.I.T.S album to Revenge.

....1st let me say, Ive been a long time Kiss fan...... anyway....this is no masterpiece...but in all honesty, this sounds A LOT better than a lot of the questionable stuff that made it on to the 80's and 90's Kiss albums...why they didn't realese this is a bit strange...
milehighmuskie 2 years ago 2
I'm sure it was because with Gene and Paul as producers (final say as to what goes on the album), they figured they already threw Eric a 'bone' with Little Caesar.
This is definitely, in my opinion, better than 'Love is Like a Slap in the Face' or 'Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell'.
My apologies to anyone who loves those songs, just my opinion.

Eric was the heart of Kiss. His death proved the saying "only the good die young." Great tribute.
Eric, you're still missed.

Eyes of Love and not boomerang...

This sounds like it would have fit in on "Hot In The Shade" perfectly!!...and would have been a hit!
Eric's solo material is great!

Eyes of Love wasn't written for KISS, it was written for his cartoon, The Rockheads/
Felidaise 3 years ago
That's incorrect. Read the liner notes written by Bruce Kulick on Rockology. The last four songs on Rockology were written for the Rockheads, but all of the rest of the songs on Rockolgy were written for KISS (or other bands if Paul & Gene rejected the songs, which they often did).

He was my favorite drummer of all time. So nice to people and pumped some attitude back into Kiss when they needed a kick in the ass. Sings well too!

i met him @ the country club in reseda ca. for a warm-up gig prior to hot in the shade, i saw him in the parking lot walking towards the venue, he was holding two large bags (one in each hand) and was walking rather fast, i walked up to him and said "hi". He kept walking and said hi very quickly. i felt VERY bummed out. Then he must have noticed how i felt, because he stopped, walked back and talked to me for a while. WHAT A COOL GUY, I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.
