I'm on my second round of dreads, first time i had a friend that did nothing but dreads put mine in, she swore by the stuff. I did my own this time around, used a little. From both experiences I can say the wax helps at first, in moderation! A little goes a long way, then back off the wax as time goes on. It helps, just don't turn your hair into wax sculptures.
when i dreaded my hair, back in 2005 i used not only back combing, twist matting, pluse beez wax!! worked good! When I redid them a a few year later I didnt use wax, it was the same. @Dakukobura@IpocTV only reason they look "uniform" is because the hairs get glued down, it does nothing to help the dreading process. yeah dude hes right u said like 3 times a week i think..or i could just be making that up. u probably used like half a jar in a week. as u go on use it less and less like once a week, then once evry 2 weeks and so on until like 3 months and u wont need it at all. and if ur still having troubles with them coming undone it doesnt hurt to put bands in as long as u take them out early enough

....on top of that, Ancient tombs in the Mayan culture, 1'000 of years old, have been dug up with people who have dreads to their feet, and their hair is straight. Dreadlocks were actually around WAY before Rasta. IN the Bible, in the OLD Testament, the Nazarite Vow was to NOT comb or brush your hair and a sign of consecration to God, the Vow means different things for different people. Jesus was a Nazarene and John the Baptist did the Nazarite Vow. You are only suppose to cut your hair if you are in mourning, if you shame someone badly, or if you have been shamed, that is why I have dreads, and when the time is right to shave the head in shame, I will...
I dreaded my hair the natural way, because I am a Rasta. I don't promote wax, however, don't knock it either. Its your hair...do what you want with it. My hair is a representation of my strength, but my soul is what makes me who I am. Its just hair. True Rastas and lovers of locks shouldn't go around Knocking people because of how they do their hair. All dreads are beautiful. DO you need wax to dread your hair? No... But if they like the waxed look... who cares? Jah Bless
FUCK ALL U PEOPLE NATTY DREADS RULES!!!!!! Thumbs up if your proud to be a natty dread btw theres nothing wrong using Beeswax thats how I started out and my locks is perfect and fine xD
wtf ... not to be rude but get ur facts straights... of course wax is ganna be bad if the bumass who is using it dosent know how to use it.... so ppl just have to get thier information and instuctions readdd!!!!!
Look people, wax was very beneficial to me. I used very little, rolled it into the dreads well and waxed about twice a month for the first two months of my dreaded life. Now it won't do me any good because they are all locked up well, but in the initial locking process wax was great. In the two weeks between each wax I palm rolled my dreads daily and the wax comes off onto your hand. So just to throw this out there, wax DOES come out, it WAS beneficial for me and I got NO negative effects.
@lumpybruisychickeny1 i can't debate that, i've never looked in the middle of my dreads. all i know is that my dreads don't have any wax residue anymore and it's been about a month .5 since i stopped using wax and my dreads look clean cut :) all i'm sayin is that dread wax does do what it's advertised for doing and i didn't have any negative side effects. the photos used in this video are of ridiculous amounts of wax. do what you feel is right, brother :) have a good one
Why should you use wax? If you want permanent, good looking dreads, then wax is NOT the way to go. I've had dreads for just a bit over 10 months, and they're basically mature, WITHOUT WAX. With wax it could take longer, because you have to wash all that shit out. And you pay, you give your money away for a thing that you don't need. What's the point?
lol@mrsprimo dreadlocks have been a hairstyle way before it waS a lifestyle sorry to burst ur dumb fucking bubble people have been wearing dreads because the way they look for hundreds of years....the rastas werent even intruduced to dreads untill the late 20s after people from india intruduced it to them so stfu
@xxjokr122...hairstyle before a lifestyle? does that explain the fact that they came naturaly from neglection before it became discovered as a "style"?..do you think the earliest civilization started out taking care of their hair?...i don't think so man.
@xxjokr122 True deadlocks are the first original hairstyle before humans learned how to cut/style their hair but then again it has been proven that the first humans were african so logically africans would have dreads before indians.
@xxjokr122 actually it was waaay before that bud. they have been around since the humans have been around basically the age of the neianderthals or even earlier.

maybe if you have to try so hard, dreads are not for you. hint***SOME PEOPLE should just be who they are and not try so hard to emulate a culture or lifestyle that is not their own. The knots of a dreadlock signify the tumultuous path of a people historically oppressed and abused. Do you have the right to wear dreads if you do not share the culture? And to my haters, NO, it's not just a hairstyle.
that is ONE culture that wears dreads. not the only. Rasta people wore them to sho that they were not part of the crowd, that they are different. Wearing dreads is not a right earned from having a difficult life, its a way to wear your hair that reflects who you are.
"Dreadlocks are associated most closely with the Rastafari movement, but people from many groups in history before them have worn dreadlocks, including the Hindu Shiva worshippers of India, European Celts (particularly the Druids), historic African peoples,[vague] and the Sufis of Pakistan."
@ezelje --- yadda yadda yadda --- say what you want, y'all are trying so hard to pull off a "hairstyle" that LOOKS like it's been neglected, when really you just want attention. Grow up.
@mrsprimo999 why do you pick your hairstyles? is it for attention? i tend to chose them because i like them. take a leaf from your own book and grow up yourself. presuming to tell people why they do what they do, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
@ezelje It just seems silly that people with smooth-textured hair would want to either torture (OR neglect) their hair to coerce it into a style that............well, I don't know how else to say this, but, it just looks stupid on them. Yes, I said it. Dreads look stupid on white people. And now, I'm finished. But before I depart......as to "having no idea what I'm talking about", I've been stating MY opinion so I'm the only one who can know what I'm talking about, ya dig? :)
@b1gw0rm187 You're not going to get mature full dreads in 3 days. They take patience & time. If you want fabricated, artificially "mature" dreads; use wax. If you want natural, maintenance free beautiful dreads, don't. It's that simple. ;)
i would say that in small amounts every few months it doesnt hurt, however if used frequently it just sticks dreads together rather than them dreading
Jamaican Mango and Lime Cream Wax...is alright if your twisting individual locks. But if your using the Towel rub method I suggest not using it, just use the locking twist gel.
The cream wax has petroleum in it, and the build up sucks!
I'm not using any products in my hair. Why put something foreign on my head just to fill the pockets of these hair product companies. Time and patience when growing locks pays out well in the end.
If you want dreadlocks do nothing just wash your hair and rinse well. Maybe don't use shampoo with sodium laurel sulphate. Don't spend your money on nonsense
hold on i use dreadheadhq wax and my dreads look wonderful.and2 or 3 times a week lol ur retarted.i do it once a month, wash my hair a week after the wax and rest of the time every 3 days and touch up with knottyboy locksteady gel and dhhq lockin accelerator after every wash and looks tons better that those shiity locks from the video
their plenty people with dreads who use wax, ITS JUST THAT MOST DUMBASSES OVER WAX!!!!!! you only need a lil bit, you put it in once a week, and wash out with a residue free shampoo, the wax holds the dread together so it can tighten than not using wax, just dont fuckin overwax dumbbitches!!, o, and dont use bees wax, it has chemicals that fuck your hair up months later
@killadub234 Wax is a residue, waxing your hair in the first place then straight away you have over waxed. There is no need to wax stop listening to johnny clean he is selling you wax you don't need.
I am not here to call anyone names or disrespect anyone, BUt I have had sister locs or very thin locs most of my life, and Knotty Boy wax was a life saver asi ti allowed me to maintain my "just twisted-look" for a very long time. The wax has made my hair longer and stronger. But you do have to be VERY careful, when you use the wax, and yess it does wash out very easily with hot water and shampoo.
WAX SHOULD ONLY BE USED VERY VERY VERY VERY MODERATELY this is not something that u should apply everyday or even every week USE IT AS LESS AS POSSIBLE and keep hair dry when it being used also waxes that should be use by people is water or oil base waxes since water will wash out the water based wax and since oil is lighter then water it will wash out easily people who have had bad experience with it is because they abuse it again USE IT AS LEAST AS POSSIBLE and give it time
I HAVE BEEN USING THIS MANGO AND LIME WAX AND THIS IS THE BEST SHIT I EVER DID FOR MY HAIR. IT SMELLS GOOD IT TAKES CARE OF FRIZZY HAIR. AND IM LOOKING FRESH TO DEATH...NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD DO IT JUST SAYING ITS NOT HORRIBLE LIKE PEOPLE BELOW ME ARE SAYING 0_o
Also, after some time freeforming (which is what mainly helps afro-textured hair that has been aided in locing up), you can simply switch out products. The pictures in the video were a MAJOR stretch. I have NEVER seen THAT MUCH wax in a person's head before. His hair looked incredibly stiff.............scratch that, it didn't even look like hair. It looked more like yarn. That was entirely too much. Before using ANY prodoct, look up how to use it.
I have to say, I'm surprised by the amount of people that are REALLY being negative about wax. I for one, believe that it is a GREAT way to START the look of locs, ESPECIALLY for very short hair. And, if your hair does not unravel/is not resistant to locing (like mine), you can go for months (with proper care) free forming after getting them shaped the way you want them to be. In short, use whatever product helps you get the LOOK you want. Just avoid petroleum, and don't apply huge amounts.
i agree dude. the guy in the vid used ''Pea sized amount, perhaps a little more'' your supposed to be using like half a pee, twice a week, and then wash it all out with hot water and dread shampoo and then put new wax in.. i bet this guy overused it alot!
you know what? now your just being stupid! i mean is this rly anything to get all worked up about?
about the wax: of course its hard to wash out, it is after all beeswax inside knotted hair. but since it is beeswax, you can also melt it out. this wax is good for hair types that don't knot so easily, so that you can take a shower without the dreads ruined. its a good starter wax, just wash the crap out after a month or two and go natural..
i've had dreads with wax and without, right now i have been growing them without it and i have to say it is a million times better than using wax. maybe some would just say i "overwaxed" it but waxing at all just can't even come close to the product of natural. it feels better, cleaner, looks better, and locks faster without wax. go natural.
wax is good for your dreads if you use the right ammount dont listen to this guy, ur saposed to wash out the wax with hot water about every week, and put in fresh wax, theres no wax build up, its when u use 2 much wax that u have problems. But using it properly give ur dread nutrients and helps tighter neater dreads form
It doens't wash out with hot water. I washed it twice a day with super hot water, dread shampoo and then drying with hair drying to melt it more.. it doesn''t come out and NO I didn't over do it. This is the 4th time Ive had dreads and I've always used wax. I just woke up to the fact that wax does NOT wash out without serious hard work and months of washing and washing and washing and picking and pulling and more washing.
I used wax in the begining....the wax always washed out....However I did stop using them just because they do give your hair a waxy look...Rock the bun while they mature it locks them up tight!
Your only suppose to maintenance your hair once or twice per month. At the rate some of these people do their hair 3+ times per month is crazy. Wax or not it will fall out anyway if your always in your hair, twisting it. Wax is definatly good people don't like it cause they over do it and the result is fall outs caused by thinning of the roots. As for the mold, you need to use non-petroleum and residue free wax and shampoo. Mold comes from trapped water from residue leaving shampoos.
I CAN'T GET THE WAX OUT OF MY FUCKING HAIRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! I washed it, I dunno, 20 times with dread head shampoo and it won't come out! Any ideas? (Not cutting dreads)
I am not sure how long you have had your Locks but, If you don't know already you should use residue free shampoo. Sorry to waste your time if you already knew this or have tried it.
im with the kitty chick...wax is good..only if you use sparingly..people have the misconception that wax is bad because they are intimidated by the chances of over use..you have to be aware of how much you put in your hair..please take my word for it my dreads are great and i have used wax.
who said anything about mold? dirt and other things get trapped inside that get stuck to the wax. and you can't tell me that they feel/smell like dreadlocks should with all that shit in your hair.
how long have you been using it for? i suggest you stop.
if you ever get rid of your dreads, i dare you to take one and open it up and dissect it. then maybe you'll get it, but of course it will be too late by then.
ok, i used wax from dreadhead hq. i'm glad i did cuz i'm a nursing student and my dreadies needed to look "neat". but if u watch knottyjonnyclean on youtube he'll explain why alot of people don't like wax. it's cuz u can over wax really easily. but if u just use a little bit for the first month just to keep them lookin nice and getting them to lock tighter (the way i did it) u should be fine. no worries mate.
Does wax really screw up your hair? because i've been useing just beezwax ever since i got em which is like... 5 mounths and they are alright but in the long run will they turn out bad?
Yes! The wax will build up and you'll have to cut them off there are wax products that you can use just dont use beezwax its really bad for your hair.
there is never need for any amount of wax. all it takes is patience. wax is a temporary solution that causes the hair not to dread as well as it would on its own. trust me, i have seen enough people who use wax for many years to know that it's not good for dreads.
to maintain them they need to be mature enough and use a crochet needle.
dreadlocks = matted hair, NOT hair being slicked down and held together by wax.
hey guys keep in mind i didnt use it either. Let others learn that it's wrong on there own if there gonna use it let them use it. If it's really that bad then they'll realize it and take care or the problem, as best they can.
well then how could you possibly know the effects if you don't use it yourself? why would you tell someone to use it? why let them ruin their hair when there is no need to? that's just mean.
everyone i've talked to who have dreads and used it has regretted it. it doesn't matter what their hair type is, wax for dreads is bad, period.
wow im mexican and i have dreadlocks does that mean im stealing african culture NO because some of my ancestor's ( The aztecs had dreads before any black and white man ever step'd on america so in other words native americans where the first ones with dreads in AMERICA we couldn't stole there culture because we where a ocean apart. ) now for white people i cant say the same .
thats bkuz dreads didnt start as a style its just WAT HAPPENS wen u just DONT mess with ur hair, i mean cavemen probably had dreads on wat is now american soil so its not just africans
1. youre mexican, and youre talking about stealing culture.
2. who is (was) an ocean apart?
3. as ive said before, dreadlocks belong to humanity, anyone saying otherwise just cant accept the fact that they belong to something much larger than their race or ethnicity.
no matter the skin color or texture of the hair...dreadlocks are the same as matted hair. you cant tell me in "your" culture its called something different. It is matted hair! AND we all stem from the same ancestors...we are brothers and sisters.
If you are trying to make a point about ethnicity not mattering with dreads, HUGE kudos. For everyone debating this, EVERY culture has a tie to dreadlocks. Do some research and you will find it in every culture. Some earlier than others, but how much copying can people do from one another when transportation is walking?
I know vikings had them and chinese monks these people didnt always had matted hair they braided there hair or pony tailed it and didnt bother doing nothing to it but loc it as there rituals and many people of different oregons did the same. So stop bitchen people and do some research plus i dont BITCH WEN I SEE A BLACK PERSON WITH STRAIGHT HAIR IS NOT LIKE I TELL THEM WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY TRYING TO BE WHITE AND STEALING OTHER PEOPLE CULTURE its because I dont care what they do with THERE HAIR.
im mexican as well bro. The reason everyone i the world got them is because they didnt have time to take care of thier hair. They were to busy tring to survive. You really think if our ancestors were alive they'd be fighting over this?
not really bro but im just trying to protect our ancestor's rituals ( aztecs, incas, and other native americans ) from people who say that loc's was never part of our culture and we are stealing it from there culture. so really im not trying to argue about dreads but about what is of our culture and having an ignorant fuck say stupid shit without knowing shit about are culture.
google the shit up " Aztec dreadlocks " just because they had straight hair doesn't mean they didn't have Loc plus look up "Dreadlock mummies or skeletons of peru".
google "chauchilla cemetery" , this is where they found 3000-year old mummies in peru with Dreadlocks still intact. See the pics for yourself. Truth and facts right there
Wax is good and bad in a way, you just have to keep your hair washed and you'll be str8. When people leave that wax in their hair for a long time, they run into problems in the long run. Thats just my opinion....

tooo ANY OF YOU THAT THINK WAX GOING TO HELP YOU GET DREADLOCKS YOUR WRONG over a long period its going to start to mold and when you wax your dreadlocks the wax stays in there..soo you can say your dreadlocks are held together by wax unlike other people dreads like mine are nautral and not candles!

i know! time and patience! dreadlocks products are an industry, and people are making money out of it :) its important to make people understand there are alternatives to spending money on products.
myself I run a salon where we dont use any wax during dreadlocks making
I used, natural wax for those organic freaks out there. Home made too, my mom is an herbalist. It was bee's wax and coconut oil. Use a double boiler, melt the wax. Aim for 90% Wax 10% coconut oil.
i've used dread wax before on all three of the times i've dreaded up including the ones i have now and no problems and my hair looks way better than the guy in this video idiots use wax and mess up from overwaxing not waxing in general and i got proof on that have you ever tried wax the correct way?
yea it does you have to use hot water like when my locktician does my hair she uses hot water she doesn't use wax but i do and she recommends it but she knows it cakes until it is washed out
I'm on my second round of dreads, first time i had a friend that did nothing but dreads put mine in, she swore by the stuff. I did my own this time around, used a little.

No... But if they like the waxed look... who cares? Jah Bless

So just to throw this out there, wax DOES come out, it WAS beneficial for me and I got NO negative effects.
speedboarder87 1 year ago
Wax doesn't come out if you cut your dreads you will still find nasty wax in the middle where you use it
lumpybruisychickeny1 1 year ago
@lumpybruisychickeny1 i can't debate that, i've never looked in the middle of my dreads. all i know is that my dreads don't have any wax residue anymore and it's been about a month .5 since i stopped using wax and my dreads look clean cut :) all i'm sayin is that dread wax does do what it's advertised for doing and i didn't have any negative side effects. the photos used in this video are of ridiculous amounts of wax. do what you feel is right, brother :) have a good one
speedboarder87 1 year ago 2
For fucks sake people.

@xxjokr122 True deadlocks are the first original hairstyle before humans learned how to cut/style their hair but then again it has been proven that the first humans were african so logically africans would have dreads before indians.

maybe if you have to try so hard, dreads are not for you. hint***SOME PEOPLE should just be who they are and not try so hard to emulate a culture or lifestyle that is not their own.

ChrisRoss714 2 years ago
Also, after some time freeforming (which is what mainly helps afro-textured hair that has been aided in locing up), you can simply switch out products. The pictures in the video were a MAJOR stretch. I have NEVER seen THAT MUCH wax in a person's head before. His hair looked incredibly stiff.............scratch that, it didn't even look like hair. It looked more like yarn. That was entirely too much. Before using ANY prodoct, look up how to use it.
21rolemac 2 years ago
I have to say, I'm surprised by the amount of people that are REALLY being negative about wax. I for one, believe that it is a GREAT way to START the look of locs, ESPECIALLY for very short hair. And, if your hair does not unravel/is not resistant to locing (like mine), you can go for months (with proper care) free forming after getting them shaped the way you want them to be. In short, use whatever product helps you get the LOOK you want. Just avoid petroleum, and don't apply huge amounts.
21rolemac 2 years ago
i agree dude. the guy in the vid used ''Pea sized amount, perhaps a little more'' your supposed to be using like half a pee, twice a week, and then wash it all out with hot water and dread shampoo and then put new wax in.. i bet this guy overused it alot!
bexgh666 2 years ago
You cant wash that nasty shit out.
itschamesbitch 2 years ago
yes u can..if hot water isn't enough, you can melt it out with a hair dryer. i've also read that u can soak the dreads with apple vinegar..

Peace and love.
itschamesbitch 2 years ago
you know what? now your just being stupid! i mean is this rly anything to get all worked up about?
about the wax: of course its hard to wash out, it is after all beeswax inside knotted hair. but since it is beeswax, you can also melt it out. this wax is good for hair types that don't knot so easily, so that you can take a shower without the dreads ruined. its a good starter wax, just wash the crap out after a month or two and go natural..
bexgh666 2 years ago
i've had dreads with wax and without, right now i have been growing them without it and i have to say it is a million times better than using wax. maybe some would just say i "overwaxed" it but waxing at all just can't even come close to the product of natural. it feels better, cleaner, looks better, and locks faster without wax. go natural.
deftonesinatra1 2 years ago 2
wax is good for your dreads if you use the right ammount dont listen to this guy, ur saposed to wash out the wax with hot water about every week, and put in fresh wax, theres no wax build up, its when u use 2 much wax that u have problems. But using it properly give ur dread nutrients and helps tighter neater dreads form
petersonp715 2 years ago
It doens't wash out with hot water. I washed it twice a day with super hot water, dread shampoo and then drying with hair drying to melt it more.. it doesn''t come out and NO I didn't over do it. This is the 4th time Ive had dreads and I've always used wax. I just woke up to the fact that wax does NOT wash out without serious hard work and months of washing and washing and washing and picking and pulling and more washing.

DejaBlues 2 years ago
Your only suppose to maintenance your hair once or twice per month. At the rate some of these people do their hair 3+ times per month is crazy. Wax or not it will fall out anyway if your always in your hair, twisting it. Wax is definatly good people don't like it cause they over do it and the result is fall outs caused by thinning of the roots. As for the mold, you need to use non-petroleum and residue free wax and shampoo. Mold comes from trapped water from residue leaving shampoos.

really is the dread wax so bad? i wanna know the thru
sonideroman 2 years ago
yes...
ymereg3333 2 years ago 3
what happen whit the wax?
sonideroman 2 years ago
first... it will embed itself in the dread, making the dread less flexible and 2 times harder.
second... you can easily see the wax
... even if you dont see it, i bet if you chopped off part of the dread it (the wax) will be stuck on the inside of the dread.
a.k.a. build up
third... it holds water... a.k.a. can cause mold
fourth... sticky and will make others think you dont wash your hair.
need more?
ymereg3333 2 years ago 2
thanks my bredda....and, what is the best option for get good dreads?
sonideroman 2 years ago
there are plenty of options.
i dont have a correct say for the best option though...
plenty of people do the back comb method or twisting
some people do the natural way
...some people to a combination
Example... backcomb then natural.
eventually it will dread.

AfroSamurai92 2 years ago
there is never need for any amount of wax. all it takes is patience. wax is a temporary solution that causes the hair not to dread as well as it would on its own. trust me, i have seen enough people who use wax for many years to know that it's not good for dreads.
to maintain them they need to be mature enough and use a crochet needle.
dreadlocks = matted hair, NOT hair being slicked down and held together by wax.
o0kittyfetus0o 2 years ago
hey guys keep in mind i didnt use it either. Let others learn that it's wrong on there own if there gonna use it let them use it. If it's really that bad then they'll realize it and take care or the problem, as best they can.

If you are trying to make a point about ethnicity not mattering with dreads, HUGE kudos. For everyone debating this, EVERY culture has a tie to dreadlocks. not really bro but im just trying to protect our ancestor's rituals ( aztecs, incas, and other native americans ) from people who say that loc's was never part of our culture and we are stealing it from there culture. so really im not trying to argue about dreads but about what is of our culture and having an ignorant fuck say stupid shit without knowing shit about are culture.

you know even if wax doesn't help locking it can still be used as dreadlock hair gel and it helps stop your hair from smelling mank.
mank means like shit

stops it smelling 'mank' until the mould and mildew kicks in. remember wax doesnt wash out. then you have all the bugs that like mould and mildew.
