Wow! A Connoisseur! You are completely right. Emerson plays in 4/4 instead of 9/8 as Brubeck wrote it down. And I always asked myself why? I'm sure, that today, Emerson would play it in 9/8. It is much more expressive and does not sound as a country song....
Don't forget it was a part of the show... Emerson isn't a jazz musician and when first he was playing in The Nice he was rideing his orhgans and 4/4 is more natural for things like that... can you see a reason to keep 9/8 by rhyhmic sectin by 5 minutes when Keith was doing show? I don't think so.: )
