The guitar James is playing is a custom made by a luthier named Ken Lawrence. He took James' Explorer specs and made this one for him. So far I think that this is the only one in existence. James has had this for quite a while dating back to the MTV VMA's in '96. Other than the World Magnetic Tour, the only other time I've seen him use it was @ Woodstock '99.

no they're not, its a gibson black beauty. pickupss are emg. same goes with most of hetfield's shit. the les paul repro's by esp are copies of custom GIBSONS. for example his iron cross les is a gibson, but he now uses the esp one sometimes cuz he has a deal with esp.

In almost every video I watch of Metallica (and that is a bunch) he is playing an ESP/LTD. He was playing a red les paul custom ESP at Ozzfest 08 I was there they didn't use one gibson I promise.
