I've just replaced a pair of Metzelers on a 2011MY Speed Triple - 2380 miles, under 2mm on the centre line so still legal, but with the worst/wettest of the winter to come I didn't see them going past 2500ish legally/safely.
The performance of the tyre is good, loads of feel and you can use as much of the tyre as you want to take it to the edge, no problem. Chicken strips sir? No, that's fine with Herr Metzler. The profile remained good, just unacceptable wear rates! Dunlop Sportsmarts fitted.
@gongoozled i took my bike in for a warranty problem and noticed i had parked it next to a bran spanker that did not even have number plates on ,and i noticed it had dunlops on it
The Racetecs that come as standard on the 2011 Speed Triple are K3 compound designed for fast road use and aren't full on track day tyres. The track compounds are K2 and K1 increasing in grip and wear rate. The K3 is a good compromise for fast grippy road use. Metzeler Racetecs employ a single compound with a flexible steel belt for better cornering grip. If you aren't nailing the bike to the limits try a bt023 or even a bt016 as they are mutli compound and shouldn't wear as quick.
@Mr1050speedy your probably right after a big moment on a wet road i have lost a bit of confidence in them and even when its dry but cold i just dont feel to great with these tires .i have know whore out the rear and now have a m5 but still have a worn out race tec on the front but i will soon be swopping this for a m5
@ROOSTER1067 i had the same problem with the race tec ! rear tire was a damn slick after 1800mls and i bought my triple brand new so i didnt hit the gas hard at the beginning !
@schoarama87 mine was bald at 2400 miles but this was in the cold wet part of the year and i was running in the bike so if i had bought a second tyre it would have lasted considerably less
Just got in from a ride, looked at my rear tyre and after 960 miles i have 2mm of rubber remaining. I think It may last another 200 miles if im lucky. But im well impressed with the grip in the dry and the feel from the tyre!
@trex450sev2 in the dry there awsome ,just wore it out just had a metzeler m5 fitted and took it out for the first time today and seems just as good once scrubbed in .not yet tried in the wet but supposed to be a lot better.there is a lot more tread depth and a lot more groves for the water to go,and they supposed to last longer but still a sports tire
Would it be possible to maybe make a before and after video of those tires? like make a video now that they are not worn out at all anymore and then maybe one after a couple of thousand miles etc. ?
@trex450sev2 its a new bike witch i paid 9 grand for and dont want to crash it and some of the time i have had it ive been running it inn .plus the tire profile is a very round profile and very difficult to use all the tire ,not my ducati in the clip i use all the tire on that
@ROOSTER1067 sorry if it sounded like im taking the piss, just having a laugh. I have now got rid of my KTM SMT, and also have a new speed triple, I have 2mm of tyre not used on the side, it's just going in for it's first service. Great bike! I have a black one with R&G tail tidy, triumph oversized gold bars, fly screen, belly pan, single seat cover, low boy arrow exhaust, aluminium res on front and rear break and the triumph LED indicators front and rear.
@trex450sev2 no probs sounds like your a more agresive rider then me ,just dont feel ready to push it futher yet.when i get a new bike i always go steady on it for a bit until i feel ready to push harder
@ROOSTER1067 The Arrow Low Boy is worth every penny, alot cheaper than what im used to paying for Akrapovic systems on my KTM's. And it is a huge weight saving. It keeps the centre of gravity even lower aswell.
@trex450sev2 i could see the centre of gravity being a lot lower ,its just looks like something missing to me if you know what i mean ,but it all down to personal taste ,not that i am saying i dont like it
How much weight do you think the Arrow Low Boy saves compared to the standard twin cans?
I'd also like to add I have about the same amount of chicken strips left on my rear tyre, I'm not very experienced yet tho so I have a good excuse :)This is my first bike ever, a few people said I was crazy getting a 1050cc bike as my first but I'm not having a problem handling it sofar ( The engine is still limited at around 100 horsepower tho, putting it on full power when I get my license)
@Baziell I think It saves about 6 KG's in weight, I had a 600cc and 1000cc for my first bikes. The reason a less powerful bike can help when starting out is it enables you to concentrate on your riding technically. Body position, laying the bike over, braking etc. Without the worry that your going to get spat off if you don't respect the power. Just respect it and stay smooth with the right hand.
@trex450sev2 true a less powerful bike dose make you a better rider you need to carry more corner speed a big engine can make lazy and boot it down the streights.
@ROOSTER1067 I might add it's just the right side of my tyre which is almost all used, the left has 10mm remaining, need to go to europe and practice on some roundabouts! My KTM SMT had Continental Sport Attack tyres which were a good compromise, loads of grip in the wet.Only let go once and i was giving it a hand full on a squared off tyre. I personally like the tyres fitted on the Speed Triple, I don't get much enjoyment from riding in the rain anyway, so I will just ride smooth in the wet.

@ROOSTER1067 Yeah your right, personal tastes. How about the arrow twin cans to replace the standard ones, they probably save 5 kg in weight.

Got the same bike and tires and I feel the same way about them. I'm not extremely comfortable on them in wet conditions.
Was thinking of maybe getting metzeler m5 's next, I hear those got great grip aswell but are way better in wet conditions ( and last a bit longer).
Baziell 9 months ago
@Baziell had a big moment on them and lost confidence in the wet since, dont know why triumph speced them on this sort of bike ,
