i went to DMA at OWU this year, and just so some of you guys know, they teach you the conducting routine THAT morning, you don't exactly have very much time to go over it
it depends on which one you go to. I don't remember exactly, but I think the summer symposium DMA that I went to was a couple $100. But that covers housing and meals for a week.
In marching band, as a drum major, it's not necessarily your job to be emotional while conducting. It's the job of being the only representation of tempo. If you're getting all emotional while conducting on a podium and the band is on the other side of the field the tempo will appear vague and not concise at all and most likely an error will occur.
Being "emotional" while conducting is for orchestral settings or concerts in my opinion.
@Seanssk84life So untrue. The point of a drum major isn't to be just a human metronome. Along with marking time, you're supposed to convey the emotion and feel of the piece for the band. When the band has something to feed off of they gain a sense of emotion and perform better
Of course one shouldn't cry and laugh on the podium, but only a bad drum major would be stiff without any emotion, and only a bad drum major would let emotion interfere with tempo. Music IS emotion, no matter the setting.
What I meant in my previous statement was explicit. I didn't say, "Don't use any emotion at all." I'm simply saying conducting is first, then emotions come second. Primarily though, my point was not to be completely emotional in an exaggerated sense. Regardless though, these students are learning to conduct whereupon they'll integrate emotion later. If emotions make the ictus vague, then who the hell is keeping tempo? That's all I really wanted to point out, and I agree with you.
was that firebird?

The "County" sponsers our school's drum major camp, so if there is any extra money its probably just a little bit.
