its a rare occasion that wolves attack people,and they are not 'evil'.they are just animals in the wild that just live their life according to their surroundings.maybe they attack our cattle and stuff,but thats because we have chopped down so many of their habitat that a lot of the deer have gone too,so they really didnt have a choice. like i said, it's very rare for that to happen. wolves get territorial in winter, it's the folks fault for going near them in the first place.

When travelling in bear country, you must take pecautions & I think it would be wise when passing through wolf territory to take precautions too. It's not a good idea to take your dog for a walk if you know wolves are about for example.

Wolves are curious, they do not like other canines in their territory. If you were alone, it is likely they would have stayed away. It was the dogs that bothered them.

@gyrate4 That is an outright lie. Where I live we have a healthy wolf population. In some areas we have problems with wolf depredation. In spite of having twice seen a pair of wolves right in my yard and living within about a 1hour drive from a zone where wolves needed to be controlled I HAVE NEVER TAKEN A SHOT AT A WOLF. Most of the hunter that I know do a lot more to preserve wildlife and their habitat than the uninformed You Tube trolls.

That's a 100% mortality rate and this wasn't in hunting season. There's documented proof that predators killed more ungulates than hunters.

Hunting is away of putting food on the table for some people. When my grandfather came to this country over 100 years ago they lived off the land until their livestock herd was established and they had enough land cleared to grow a crop. Does that make him a bad person. People still eat meat today.

@tuguybear Hunting is regulated by duration of the open season or if necessary by limiting through a draw. The draw is like a lottery. Only successful applicants can obtain a tag. Since the wolf introduction, hunter success rate has declined steadily and may be closed. Wolves can kill all they want and sometimes they don't even eat it. Up here our Dene are limited to 2 caribou and there is no non resident hunting. The wolves don't have to buy a tag and they have no limit to what they can take.

About 25 years ago we started to see moose down in the farm country. Now we have moose as far south as Regina, something NEVER seen before. At the same time the wolf population in the forest zone has exploded. There has been unprecedented low hunter success rate in the Traditional moose country

The wolves have been increasingly taking livestock form the farms and needed to be controlled. We have had wolf depredation in the Saskatchewan river valley and other areas 200 miles from the wolfs traditional territory. They have pushed the moose out of the bush and are now following them into the farm country and getting into trouble with farmers and ranchers.
@tuguybear So here is what you will see and are seeing. When the wolf population increases and the game ungulates they feed on become scarce they will expand their territory as you are now seeing. As they expand there will be conflict with livestock and human encounters. The bottom line is, if you have an increasing and expanding wolf population you will eventually need to control that population whether you like it or not. Our Dene people had to do the same thing from time to time.

What these women have to realize is that any activity in the wolve's territories is a cause for concern, so the pack Will come to investigate. These wolves were probably inexperienced young ones, and when young wolves come upon something they don't know about, they will try to play with it or get closer to learn more about it. Added with the dogs, who are viewed as threats to the pack, there is no question in my mind why they approached these women.

its a rare occasion that wolves attack people,and they are not 'evil'.they are just animals in the wild that just live their life according to their surroundings.maybe they attack our cattle and stuff,but thats because we have chopped down so many of their habitat that a lot of the deer have gone too,so they really didnt have a choice. like i said, it's very rare for that to happen. wolves get territorial in winter, it's the folks fault for going near them in the first place.

Attacks happends often when people has dogs. The dogs is a threat for them. Wolves will soon die if we are not doing anything about it. They deserve to live because they are smart and like a family. @NothingButBarbeque I don't think we can be so catagoric, wolves are capable of changing their habits & behaviour, adapting to new situations, Wolf attacks though rare do occur, but there is no need to over react.
When travelling in bear country, you must take pecautions & I think it would be wise when passing through wolf territory to take precautions too. It's not a good idea to take your dog for a walk if you know wolves are about for example.

Wolves are curious, they do not like other canines in their territory. If you were alone, it is likely they would have stayed away. It was the dogs that bothered them.

@gyrate4 That is an outright lie. Where I live we have a healthy wolf population. In some areas we have problems with wolf depredation. In spite of having twice seen a pair of wolves right in my yard and living within about a 1hour drive from a zone where wolves needed to be controlled I HAVE NEVER TAKEN A SHOT AT A WOLF. Most of the hunter that I know do a lot more to preserve wildlife and their habitat than the uninformed You Tube trolls.

Yellowstone park hasn't shrunk in that time so there is just as much room for them now as there was 15 years ago. Studies show that wolves favourite prey when available is elk. Several years ago the moose population was plummeting in one area. Officials radio collared about a dozen moose calves. Everyone of them was killed by predators. That's a 100% mortality rate and this wasn't in hunting season. There's documented proof that predators killed more ungulates than hunters.

@gyrate4 You really don't have a grasp on our situation. I look out my window and see 2 feet of snow. The wind chill this morning was 41 below. Many people here are employed in seasonal construction. Hunting is away of putting food on the table for some people. When my grandfather came to this country over 100 years ago they lived off the land until their livestock herd was established and they had enough land cleared to grow a crop. Does that make him a bad person. People still eat meat today.

We have wilderness that is the envy of most places in the world and we haven't needed outside help to preserve it. @tuguybear Hunting is regulated by duration of the open season or if necessary by limiting through a draw. The draw is like a lottery. Only successful applicants can obtain a tag. Since the wolf introduction, hunter success rate has declined steadily and may be closed. Wolves can kill all they want and sometimes they don't even eat it. Up here our Dene are limited to 2 caribou and there is no non resident hunting. The wolves don't have to buy a tag and they have no limit to what they can take.

@tuguybear The self limiting argument works great IN THEORY. Here in the real world we have a very similar situation. We used to have a very large moose population in the Pasqua and Porcupine forest. About 25 years ago we started to see moose down in the farm country. Now we have moose as far south as Regina, something NEVER seen before. At the same time the wolf population in the forest zone has exploded. There has been unprecedented low hunter success rate in the Traditional moose country

@tuguybear Some hunter who were always successful every other year said they never saw a moose in the Pasqua hills. The wolves have been increasingly taking livestock form the farms and needed to be controlled. We have had wolf depredation in the Saskatchewan river valley and other areas 200 miles from the wolfs traditional territory. They have pushed the moose out of the bush and are now following them into the farm country and getting into trouble with farmers and ranchers.

@tuguybear So here is what you will see and are seeing. When the wolf population increases and the game ungulates they feed on become scarce they will expand their territory as you are now seeing. As they expand there will be conflict with livestock and human encounters. The bottom line is, if you have an increasing and expanding wolf population you will eventually need to control that population whether you like it or not. Our Dene people had to do the same thing from time to time.

What I find very frustrating are people who place their own ideology ahead of the needs of people who have a direct stake in the process. There are extremist on both sides. What really pisses me off is the Euros that have screwed up their own wildlife management but try to tell us how to handle ours.

What these women have to realize is that any activity in the wolve's territories is a cause for concern, so the pack Will come to investigate. These wolves were probably inexperienced young ones, and when young wolves come upon something they don't know about, they will try to play with it or get closer to learn more about it. Added with the dogs, who are viewed as threats to the pack, there is no question in my mind why they approached these women.
