Thx for this review. There was a time when Michael Jackson was a brilliant showman. Though I continued to track his career into the 2000's, his peak was surely in the 80's. That's when fans got their money's worth. "This is it" is just capitalizing on MJ's death, and nothing more.
Remember guys Michael said he was preserving his voice. Also the Dangerous tour rehearsals are on youtube. They are not that great and not nearly as good as This Is It. Michael ALWAYS half heartedly performs or sings during a rehearsal and then knocks it out of the box. The film was not to show insight into him it was about his rehearsals. Besides, the openening disclaimer does say FOR THE FANS!!!!! It's NOT for you!
Kevin is a huge fan and has every album and there is a big differance between a youtube video and a massive Imax release for a half hearted performance. The Disclaimer also says it was for Michaels private archive and never intended to be seen by anyone which is telling of the motives behind This Is Its release. I have nothing against MJ but this film has nothing but sub par performances and no insight into Mj himself as the ads stated it would. I do agree hardcore fans would find it enjoyable.
You know EVERY critic who didn't like it says the exact same thing: They wanted insight into MJ himself. We the fans already knew about MJ and there was nothing else left to tell. If you missed it while he was alive you missed it.
And maybe we'd never get to know that stuff since there was that wall of privacy MJ was famous for, but you can't tell me all the hours of footage they have of MJ couldn't have yielded more interesting footage.
Although I do want to make an additional point that the movie specifically advertised that we WOULD get to know MJ like we've never known him before! Since that promise was not kept it's a perfectly valid complaint for people to have.
