@baseballfuries08 I was speculating on the lyrics. 'seen the real atrocities buried in the sand, stockpiled safety for a few' not sure if Palestine is very sandy though.
There are too many great Joy Division songs for me to pick a favorite, but this is right up there.... all of the studio out-takes on STILL are awesome. I just looked at the JD documentary again today and realized anew what an incredible band this was.... way ahead of their time and yet soaking in it.
I got a live version, which sounds really good, starts off slow on the drums, and speeds right up, sounds powerful. If I could go back in time and see any one band, it would be Joy Division.
after the crash the "comunist " system in estern europe many people strart living in real the ice age without job , any prospect , with really small support from goverment .

Thank you for the lyrics---I used to have STILL on cassette and this song was defintely one of my favorite jthe genuinely spooky Exercise One,(which I actually used to do my exercise to--hey, it was fun, plus the song's got a great beat, plus Peter Hook's mad phat bass booming through it) and the live version of Isolation. If I remember correctly,it was never released as a single, though I could be wrong.
I can't believe it took me this long to find out about this band! Although it's always nice to find out later sometimes then never. FYI i found out about joy division from another band She Wants Revenge, they grew up listining to these guys. I'd check em out if you like JD.
Do you know if there is any link with Siouxie & The Banshees' The Staircase (Mystery) (1978)??
Sounds so close... Maybe... the Zeitgeist?
But anyways, both awesome and timeless songs!!!

I hated this as their worst song after Novelty. But now... I just wanna make it louder and louder.

the beat songs like "rock n roll high school" by the ramones and the riff sounds a bit like "white riot" by the clash
paolorossifan2006 1 year ago
i don't think they heard rock n roll high school before writing this.
TADGELL 1 year ago
true. this was recorded before the ramones song but the beat for this and bits of the drum intro to rock n roll high school are similar
paolorossifan2006 1 year ago
@paolorossifan2006
Actually this was recorded after. Rock N' Roll High School was recorded in late 1978 and released in summer 1979. This was recorded in late 1979.

Seen the real atrocities, buried in the sand
Stockpiled safety for a few -
we stand holding hands I -
living in the ice age ....
Nothing will hold, nothing will fit
Into the cold, no smile on your lips
Living in the ice age ....
Wonderful song! Best proof that good music is immortal :)

Such an underrated JD song. Probably my favorite behind Disorder. Honestly though nothing is ever going to top Disorder.

Yup, Disorder's their most beautiful song. Ice Age's very impressive though.
