  • 16 people hate dogs. and chemistry.

  • I wonder why the liquid oxygen oscillated. o.=.o

  • Could the lady at the end say "actually" any more? XD

  • You decanted out the "l" in Sulfur. You guys must be really good at your jobs.

  • ''so where we doing this then?''

    ''...in the dark somewhere''

Did they know they were on camera? lol

  • loll..oh poor Neil ,he is always the one to clean the instruments at the end of the experiment.

  • i thought they used magnesium for cameras o.o

  • Brazil has no sulphur deposits. all of it we use here is from other places around the world. Our main source is the Andes

  • @itabiritomg you are wrong, tons of sulfur are produced in Brazil by Petrobras. those huge mountains of sulfur come from our petrolium.

  • 3:03 it went 88 mph

  • @MrAwesomeAsian22 That took a long time to figure out. When I saw the clip again: "LMAO!!!" haha nice one

  • Very interesting stuff..you guys did all the elements??

  • 3:19

  • 5:50

    I was expecting some kind of information on this but the video ended >.>;;

Or was the fact that it was found on your colleague's honeymoon and consists of sand and sulfer the only reason for showing it? xD

    ~Jkun~

  • Those sulphur (or sulfur depending on what sort of English you use), look like tiberium crystals.

  • is it possible to melt powder sulfur without burning, like the sulfur in black powder.

  • Could anyone tell me when they started and stopped using this reaction for photography?

  • 3:01 sounded like a lazer

  • Don't you just wish you had a personal scientist go around with you. Think of the adventures!

  • Comment removed

  • Really useful, thanks:)

  • baaaaaark...BOOM *dog dies*

  • "This may be why in old photographs, people look so surprised. Because MY GOD! this thing has gone off! WOOSH!"

    LMAO!

  • Oh science <3

  • NEIL TALKED!!!

  • How do you explain "Thermite on Ice" explosion?

  • @RagingBubuli

Well, the best theory I've heard is that the thermite is so hot, that on contact with the ice, it separates it into it's constituent parts; hydrogen and oxygen. of course, when hydrogen and oxygen come in contact with an ignition source (thermite sparks) the reaction is very violent, and produces a loud, powerful boom.

  • isn't it meant to be sulfur now instead of sulphur? :P

  • If it wasn't for the Professor and his hair, Pete and his green labcoat, and Neil (the stig) and his failure to have any talking parts whatsoever and his success at having to clean up after every experiment, I wouldn't watch these videos.

  • light saber @.@ 3:03

  • Best intro to date.

  • That sounds like a lightsaber

  • he talks!

  • I want to try this

  • is that Dom Jolly ?

  • Is that Dom Jolly?

  • NIEL TALKS!!!

  • It seems like that sound has been used for a "time travel" sound in a movie, but I can't figure out which one... anyone know? It's VERY distinctive.

  • It seems like that sound has been used for a "time travel" sound in a movie, but I can't figure out which one... anyone know?

  • Thumbs up if these videos make you feel happy and smart at the same time!

  • the stig has spoken at 1:13

  • you mean witchcraft at 1:40

  • i've got one of these geological samples of sulfur too..and i think it smells somehow good. crazy, but not bad...

  • I like how the small lecture theatre is pretty huge XD

  • lol, look at the oldest's t-shirt. really like it, really stylish :P

  • Any chance you can upload this in HD? Along with all the other original videos? Cause this one is almost painful to watch.

  • 2:06 LOL

  • This guy is the James Cordon of the science world

  • Did Neil use to be a hitman or a body guard for some royal family or something?

  • That's a cute little noise she makes @ 5:22.... lol

  • Finally, At 1:13 I've heard a tiny glimpse of actual voice of the ice-cool chemistry iron man - The Unstoppable Neil.

  • @soberek He speaks in the potassium video aswell :D

  • @soberek

Sorry, his real voice is at 3:02

  • hey,his friend picked up sulfur piece on honeymoon!!...lol..hope,he is not slapped by his wife...thumps up man!..real chemist u people are..

  • so awesome!!

  • why does 3:02 remind me of back to the future:S looks cool:D

  • 2:07

  • @blazerx900 WOSSIJ

  • I just started taking chemistry and my teacher told about this channel.

    now I can't stop watching

  • I think this is the first video I saw where I heard Neil talk!

  • it is exalent and dynamic video of sulfure

  • Nice experiment, notice (or rather listen closely) the moment he lights the gas in tube there is soft laser blast like sound. And then main charge goes off. This is realy nice sound effect, i bet it was used in some sci-fi movie.

  • Anyone else think this sounds like the age-linking sound from Myst?

  • whats that?

    -blue light.

    and what does it do?^^

  • that has to be the coolest sound i have ever heard =)

  • more neill please

  • Hi, I LOVE your videos aot, and they have taught me so much about chemistry etc. I am just wondering, seeing I study particle and quantum physics, where did you get that 2m glass tube from? I am building a particle accelerator and a 2m glass tube, with the ability with a diffusion pump to create a vacuum in would make an excellent accelerating tube. Please tell me where I can get that tube from?

    Thanks

  • Just watching the SO2 gives me asthma...!

  • @ periodicvideos if a large amount was used in a metalic combustion chamber with this would it make a object mave faster or expolode?

  • When kids hate science at school, you know they have a bad teacher...

  • WHOOSH!!

  • the bald guy should share his feelings

  • Wow, i would wish u sent programs on Discovery science (: i watch it all the time :D

  • 133137 views

  • LOL 4:32

  • @AlphaMaleRyan actually, pete himself spelt that name wrong because he's a very old freind of his own.

  • @aashish7kumar5 that makes sense, hah thanks for the answer

  • There should be way more attractive woman scientists. She is just awesome. The videos are already incredible and to have the lesson from a hot teacher is just the icing on the cake. (Trying to say I think she is really hot without being crude lol)

  • that sounded like someone timetravelled :P

  • Holy-Terrorist;>*=* wtf, 4:20 (Suphur) other person speak name (Sulphur) the name is Sulfur !

  • I always thought flash powder like Ba(NO3)2/Mg were used in cameras

  • wow it was really cool being able to see how little a viscosity liquid oxegen has

  • Being a science technician myself I completely sympathise with Neil cleaning up all that Sulphur...

  • i love how half the dialogue in these videos is less like 'wow thats cool' than 'hahaha, oh, you silly chemists'. lol

  • Neal's tha MAN!

  • Very insightful and funny episode guys :)

  • Comment removed

  • Back To the Future???

  • i bet u that this could one day be used to power space ships weeeee

  • Poor Neil, he always have to clean up =(

But I'll be glad to spend a night with him to cheer him up ;)

  • Neil is so hot <3

  • I know that in tire manufacturing Sulfur is mixed into the rubber compounds before the mixture is super heated with steam and pressurized in the tire molds to make a longer lasting tire. The process is called "Vulcanization" (nothing to do with Star Trek).

  • SO2 is the devil. I was making sulphuric acid awhile ago which involves bubbling SO2 into water. I accidentaly breathed in a little of it and had a sore throat for 2 days... :(

  • SO2 is toxic and can kill you.

dont you know you have to handle it under a fumehood?

  • @entoris476

#1- it is in a fumehood.. Listen as he says "thats why we are doing it inside this fumehood."

#2-you will need A LOT of SO2 for it to reach toxic levels. As airsoft has stated below us, just a small wiff of it will not kill you, it will only give you a sore throat or alittle worse. Other than that, you are right, it is extremely deadly and he should be alittle more careful with it even though he is trying to make a seemingly dull field look a lot more fun.

  • @entoris476 It was outside. But from now on I'm going to either not do it at all or figure out a better way to keep from breathing it in.

  • lol at 4:32 "suphur"

  • 5:22 gross she belches

  • So it would be best to clean up the Barking Dog experiment BEFORE the sulfur oxidizes too much.

  • i lol'd wtih that explanation of why people looked so surprised in old photographs XD

  • Bomb!

  • Could you imagine leaving that stopper on (if it were a metal tube) ...you could use this stuff in guns and crap

  • I wonder how many people have used this reaction for sci-fi sound effects

  • Is SO2 heavier than air?

  • @coolliger some air (xenon and krypton are heavier)

  • @coolliger

Yes SO2 is heavier than air, breathing this gas even at very low concentrations (1-10ppm) makes a very unpleasant taste and smell (not like rotten eggs, thats H2S).

  • Why is it ok to do the "barking down" in a glass container, but for other combustion experiments it is not?

  • come to Iceland, you will find alot of sulfur there

  • i'm really glad i found this channel and i can say that their videos are very educative and fun.And whoever agrees with me give me a thumbs up

  • @Slic3R1 I do, in fact, agree with you, but I'm going to give you a thumbs down. I'm a nonconformist, what can I say ? :D

  • @Slic3R1 I agree to you, they´re explaining that stuff quite good and I really like those experiments they make.

  • that old guy is the man

  • @MrStickywicket Prof Martyn Poliakoff. He is indeed the duck's nuts. V. cool dude.

  • arent you worried abiout that test tube turning into shrapnel?

  • Whats the equation for getting sulphur?

    NO2+CS2-->?

  • --> carbon dioxide + nitrogen + sulphur? just a shot in the dark...

  • this channel is really interesting, well done....but I can't help but feel sorry for the wife of the man who found the 'sulfur sand' on their honeymoon! :-)

  • ][_{[]}][_

  • wait a minute they used magnesium for cameras a while ago not no sulphur

  • Before we could make electric flash lamps a variety of chemical reactions were used to make the flash. Magnesium powder and permanganate was one, as were sulphur flashes.

  • but agnesium lights easy and sulfer takes high heat magnesium is induced by water to

  • This was before they used magnesium.

  • i can not see this happening unles they had a blow torch and a gas mask

  • That dude's hair is fucking wicked.

  • one of my favorite videos

  • wow hes sexy

  • how the heck do you make liquid oxygen?????

  • lower it's temperature.

  • Fill a Dewar full of Liquid Nitrogen, put a copper tube through it, and run pure oxygen through the tube, and voila! Liquid Oxygen.

  • SUPHUR!!! >:O

    XD

  • Sulphur isn't smell!

  • Sulphur*

  • I bloody love the sound that reaction makes... sounds like some sci-fi laser cannon

  • I'd say it sounds more like a warp drive.

  • These guys need a discovery channel show or something.

  • @justareflexion

    I'd watch it!

  • @justareflexion Respectfully, I disagree. TV shows for the most part have to be exciting, even if they are educational. The moment they become exciting, the quality of the information drops. Also when you are pressured to post an episode at least once a week, the quality goes down at the same time quantity goes up. Besides, the videos on you tube are free, TV is expensive. Everything is just fine as it is, let it stay the same.

  • @justareflexion

lol... he does... it's called 'PERIODIC VIDEOS'. You're watching it. Right. Now.

  • FLOOSHH!

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 Extended

  • 3:02 is the reaction. Quite interesting.

  • that would make an awsome potato gun

  • Neil is JACKED!

  • this is pretty awesome

    love the hair

  • Comment removed

  • two hours ago an idiot named "sweetyteety9" posted the above comment.

  • Potattooooo cannon!!!

  • 3:18 wav

  • halo noise<?

  • Thats wat i was thinking

  • You're a loser

  • lol bigbluemonkey i know you...

  • how so you suppose he'll do that if he slit his own throat?

  • Did all of that sulphur in the flask burn away, or did it run out of oxygen?

  • "you see, hes probably thinking about chemistry while going on honeymon..I dont think he tells his wife"...haha

  • Gotta love Sulfur

  • cool

  • This DOES NOT WORK.

  • oh i know but i was bored, i really dont believe in these
