  • All that work to install used u-joints?

  • hey wayne, them ford driveshaft's do they have to have that round cover cap deal that goes on the slip yoke there? that suppose to keep out dirt and mud. i notice that on yours it doesnt have the round cap there...does it matter if its not there or does it???

  • Dec 31??? New years eve?? Shouldn't you be taking a shower and getting ready to celebrate the new year? A few drinks!

  • Why do U-joints suck sooooo bad???

  • awesome vid thanks for posting!

  • "The other methods to using this would be to actually use a press like you're supposed to, or, to use a press like you're supposed to" I has to rewind and watch that twice to make sure I wasn't hearing things

  • Why not use a torch and just cut the U-Joint in two pieces and hammer it out.Is this a good way or bad way?

  • that works great for drive shafts that you can get to with easz but i use a big c clamp on sprayers drive shafts n the needles are a pain if they drop

  • nice hat haha

  • someone needs to feed that cat, lol

  • randy is a prick, this is the cost effective shadetree way, I like it I'd screw it up. take it to a auto-parts and have it pressed in....you buy the shit they may do it for free....

  • Good video Brother...Thank you it was good to see it done again as a reminder !!!

  • hey randy1807 why dont YOU SHUT UR BEAN HOLE you inbred hill-billy assed

    country bumpkin biatch

  • Try Using a Blow Torch next time instead of Just Pounding without Heat!! Goes a lot Quicker!!!!! Is he putting USED Joints back in???? they are Only $10.00 a piece for New!!

  • Try Using a Blow Torch next time instead of Just Pounding without Heat!! Goes a lot Quicker!!!!!

  • I'm going to replace the front u-joint in the front driveshaft on my s10 tomorrow and needed a refresher, thanks. 2 more things. 1) when you said light taps I was thinking you were going to rap on it with those pliers and 2) awesome hat.

  • thanks 4 the vid , i thought i was doin it rite yer vid confirmed it 4 me thanks

  • Get er done

  • I've used a vise for 20+ year as well. Press and correct size sockets gets it done. Thanks for the video.

  • Funny and this is gonna be out there ,but you guys in Montana and here in eastern Canada, live about the same ,think the same ,act the same ,talk the same ,i enjoy your videos BTW and always happy to watch some more =)

  • Great video, I have to replace my Front u-joint on my 2004 dodge Ram, so your video helped except i dont have a vice ! Is it possible to change them without one? Im going to replace both joints of course, its a two wheel drive. got the parts coming from New York, I`m in England , anyway , i like your attitude to life and what your doing is great . Andy, England.

  • Awesome video!

I have an 05 Tundra, I used your method but also had to use some heat before I could get the caps to budge.

If they are tapered and I ruined it, mine sure did go back in really tight, and no more problems with the new universal joint :P

  • A little trick to keep the needle bearings in place when you pull the cups off is to fill the cup with grease. The bearings stay in place and there is no worry during installation that the needles will fall out of place. When you put the cup back on, the grease will squeeze out.

  • your video is the clearest hands on on youtube!, anyway try a Wilton brand vise - they last forwever!

  • At the begining of your vid it shows a bunch of spray cans, paint, ect., and A CAN OF BLASTER PENETRANT...if you would have soaked the joints with it, say 1/2 hour before , would of pressed the cups out MUCH EASIER! Try it next time and see.

  • very smart idea .. thanks for making this video buddy.

  • good job man

  • i see u do it the same way i do

  • ive never thought of doing it this way.. ive changed many by just puttin the d shaft in the vise and beating them out with a socket and hammer lol works good for me

  • @randy1807 wow your funny and not very bright too, to bad you dont seem to realize it, there is no taper in the cup, why dont you mic it out sometime and shut your hole next time you want to sound smart furthermore, I did this job the same way that we had been taught to do it in college so I kinda got a hunch that its the right way, HA taper in the the cup wow amazing what some people believe

  • @wagner59270 - You are correct that the caps are not tapered. But, I have never done, nor seen anyone install the caps from the inside out... Never seen the snap ring installed first either. Def not how I was taught... Also, no mention of some emory cloth to clean the journals out - that may help in the future.

  • @wagner59270

Sorry, but I have to agree with Randy on this one. Your method for removal is incorrect as you should never press a cup all the way through the flange yolk.

Some cups (and flange yolks for that matter) are in fact tapered, however, it's not the only reason not to press through.

On shafts with smaller u-joints and large cups, the clearance is so tight that the old u-joint would have to be cut in order for it to be removed with a cup pushed to the center.

  • @98snakeeater

The correct way is to use a press with a U-fork to press down on the sides of the U-Joint when removing instead of the cups (you only press directly on the cups when installing)

If you must use a vise, have an extra set of hands hold a pair of equally sized sockets between the sides of the U-Joint and the vise jaws while you crank.

Checkout YoungGearLLC's U-Joint Removal and Install video to get an idea of what I mean.

  • @randy1807 Someday when you get smarter you'll realize that when REMOVING u-joints, one of the caps is pressed inward. Now we couldn't do that if they were tapered, now could we? Also, if the cup was tapered do you honestly think he would have EVEN gotten it started "backwards". Thanks for the laugh anyway.

  • @randy1807 someones a little jealous?

  • @Po0rEmerica jelous of what fuking retard think your god ???????

  • @randy1807 Are you crying?! There's no crying on youtube!

  • @randy1807 He never said he was a Mechanic anyway

  • @randy1807

You can't even spell have the words you attempted to type out...

By the way, there are no tapered cup caps on a U-joint. How else would they rest and lock into the ear flanges on the Output shaft Yoke?????

    Stupid ass.

  • @TheJeepWheeler Before you correct someone on grammar, make sure you are using correct grammar yourself. It's "half", not "have". "Have", is used to imply ownership as-in: "You have no friends." "Half", is the word you needed to use there. Next week, we'll discuss proper use of, "to", "too", and "two".

  • @cburris52001

yeah, my bad retard. Must have worked a 9 hour day then typed that out. Have fun being a loser going around on youtube and commenting on peoples opinions that have absolutley nothing to do with you. Do you feel sorry for the guy I was commenting to? Do you know him? Does it make you mad I tried to put someone down on the internet? Sorry your pussy got chapped about it. "Maybe next week", we can work on you keeping your mouth shut before it gets fucked. Peace faggot.

  • i changed u joints for yrs with just a socket and a hammer

  • so did I... stopped doing it that way for a reason too

  • @wagner59270

I''ve seen people bend the ears on the yoke while using a vice as a press. Two 4"x4" and a hammer and some sockets, always works flawlessly.

  • Comment removed

  • when something is not working use a big fucken hammer lol

now u kept saying light taps. i did not see not many light taps. lol

  • those were light taps lol

  • use some heat went putting back together

  • When I drive in a bearing or anything similar , I always grease the friction surfaces with any lithium grease, which makes pressing it in much easier, and helps in alignment as well. I highly recommend this simple tip.

  • sweet Wayne. Take a punch and tap them snap rings into the grooves of the yoke, I have had problems with rust in the ring groove and the snap rings arent truely seated..good vid dude!

  • interesting way to do it there Wayne!!! but hey if it works; then it works man!!! cool deal!!! :)

  • I always thought you had to have a press to do this. This makes a lot of sense and I'm going to try that with my jeep. But I have one question. If you put to much pressure on the socket, won't it split? I just raving but I would like to know. Thanks for the vid Wayne and I look forward to more. 5 out of 5.

  • could possibly but I would say most likely not... a cylinder is a very strong structure and most of the time when a socket breaks its from outward pressure... I have also used nuts of the correct size or small peices of round tubing

  • good idea this vid will come in handy ,i hate dealing with u-joints because of the needle bearings but i think this method will make it easy

  • The shaft in my Trans Am had a vibration, so I thought I would change the joints. The original joints had some sort of adhesive that held them in. The guy at the parts store told me I would have to heat it to melt the glue since it would take a lot of force to break them loose.

I took it to a driveshaft shop and had them changed. He spun the shaft and showed me it had a slight curve. He straightened and balanced it as well.

You're right about heating it. Me doing it would have made it worse.

  • Hi Wayne, i would'nt argue with how you did it, But i would fit the spider to the small end of the shaft first, that way you dont have the weight of the long shaft to handle while you fit the small end.

In other words, opposit to the way you did it.

You can also make the it easier if you clean it up with emery tape and add a drop of oil.

Just my two-penny worth, But hey fella a good vid, Jim

  • that is a good call and I may have to remember that next time

  • good job keep it up

  • Is your shop cat strictly a shop cat, or do you letm inside..

  • just a shop cat

  • ive done that since i was a teen

  • my way is better i use a torch

  • not sure how you would install ujoints with a torch... much less salvage old ones

  • i take them out with a torch i install them your way

  • You can heat the ends of the shaft so the steel expands and the cup will slide out easier. The problem with that is you sometimes bend it when you get it hot. You're right about salvaging the old ones. The heat doesn't do them any good.

I have used a vise, and once had to use a c-clamp to press them out. The c-clamp way sucks. Luckily my shaft was clean and not rusted.

  • indeed applying heat to any part of a driveshaft is never a good idea since there is a very bad possibility of warping and thats not good on a part that has to be perfectly straight

  • sorry to break it to you, but your way would most likely ruin every drive shaft that you've tried to do it to...

  • Nice video! good job on the U joint... *****

  • i hear kitty meowin

  • as usual

  • lol wat the fuckin hell is up with youtube changin the way we sign in and shit

  • YouTube needs to fix these video problems.

  • youtube needs to fix this video error problem!!

  • A ball joint on the car press works AWESOME for U joints as well.. Its a hellova alot bulk to work with too.

  • video error

  • ahh shit again

  • @wagner59270

    Yup... Me too D-:

  • yes this sucks its been doing this for some time now on vids that i watch
