JEEZ!! is there anything better than skilled grownups playing like grownups? If only the industry would cater to people over 14, more guys like Gatton could have viable careers, and not be dead many years before their time. Thank God for the friggin' internet, huh?
@jpalberthoward9 Well when it comes to the "industry" per se, referring mostly to large music companies, their sole concern is selling loads of records. And who can blame them. And what age demographic buys the most records? 13-18 year olds. And 13-18 year olds want to see singers who are their age, and not 30 year old guitar killers. As a 30 year old guitar killer, this saddens me, but it is the way of the world. Best thing you can do is write a great song and cross your fingers.
This makes me think of a joke about a new arrival in Heaven encountering a mysterious, virtuoso guitar player. I can't remember the setup, but the punch-line comes out like: "No, that's God. He just THINKS He's Danny Gatton".
Yer it's slightly odd seeing Danny with a les Paul, but there's no mistaking his style, a one of a kind. I think he suited the telecaster more, though an amazing player
seriously, this is one of the most amazing guitar performances ive ever heard, and i listen to all the great guitar shredders out there, believe me, ive heard them all from Greg Howe, Allen Holdsworth, Frank Gambale etc...... BUT this is unbelievable, this is not just only shredding very amazingly, this is way more, those triads etc. are crazy, they way how he is soloing with triads and voicings is outstanding
Not really Country Western guys; Southern Swing - way different. The man was so ahead of his and everybody elses time as a guitarist; what a shame he couldn't handle it....Just lost a close friend to the big "S" in February... can you imagine what he could have achieved and yet given us were he to still be alive. Thanks, Danny, for what you did leave us with.
@JohnnyTsak316 omg johnny, i've followed you, as best i could since i saw you play free at montgomery college in the late 70's i think, you played sails of charon and a myriad of other scorp tunes as well as others, i had no idea you new gatton, god no wonder your so good, when does your album come out?
All his FX are built by him and are in that box on his guitar by the bridge below his wrist. He was criticised 4 being all about gadgets and it was gadgets that really made him sound good.So from then on he stopped using FX etc and only used what was built by default into his amps by the manufacturers. So yeah he really could play that fast.Look at his 'Hot Licks' clips on You Tube where demonstrates a technique that, according to Gatton is so easy,u can 'Mindlessly practice while watching TV'
Sometimes it's really hard for me to listen to Danny - my laughter (in total astonishment) is a serious distraction! It's hard to focus on the video too, because I'm just shaking my head in constant amazement.
@namtil I've had that same feeling for 16 years and at his best he is uncanny. Technically Lenny Breau and Scotty Anderson are at least his equal. But his rip roaring improvised soloing is astonishing. The most relentless blazing soloist of the century. 87-88 his best live gigs had brilliant lead Jazz guitar and in the 70's 74-79 he could play at breakneck speed and play clean and never miss a note; unexplainable!!!
@namtil Good comment namtil' I've felt the same way for 16 years. The 3 periods of Gattons most potent playing to me were 74-79 raw blazing clean soloing, 81-81 great fingerpicking, 87-88 great jazz chops; the billion note wonder..Technically Scotty Anderson especially around 85 was the best ever technically, and Lenny Breau the all time guitar genius had the most difficult/sophisticated style BUT nobody ever had the explosive improvised soloing of one DanieL Wood Gatton...
@gattonmaster Thanks for your replies. Like all of us, I try to appreciate the masters. Luckily, it's not too hard to find them! Recently, I've come to love Scotty Anderson's playing, and Lenny has always been an inspiration (meeting and hearing him back in the 80"s helped - he's absolutely the real article). Danny Gatton remains the most "in your face" and sublime of the three - kind of like listening to John Coltrane (if he played a Tele).
Just got to put my two cents in. My god he played fast licks. I think he's using a pedal call Memory Man, which repeats notes that he plays, therefore it makes it sound that he's playing faster. I once locked into a lick using a memory man and all the musicians looked at me like Whoa! I'm not taking anything away from Danny, I've seen him play live at least a dozen times. He was incredible.
@djtomfinn My two cents...guitarists who can play fast are a dime a dozen...it's the ballad playing that separates the men from the boys...Danny was the best without effects...they called him "Danny Gadget" when he used his Magic Digus Bow"...so he got rid of it...with just a Fender Twin Reverb and a Tele he put those critics down!!!
This is a treat-I've never seen video of Danny from this era-look's like he was going' for a Roy Buchanon look with the beard and hair style. It's also cool that Buddy Emmons is in it who is one of the World's great steel players.Check out Buddy with Lenny Breau on the album "Minors Aloud".Killer stuff.
@dinguitas - hello my friend, you echoed my thoughts exactly, how the hell does a guy get this kind of chicken pickin' out of a damn Les Paul?? - it just goes to show, in the hands of a master, any old guitar will do!
Danny has an otherworldly method of expression that the likes of Anderson, Emmanuel, etc. cannot even come close to. Technically proficient as they are, next to Gatton, they have all the soul of frozen pumpkin pie !
I notice it said "undisclosed location" at the end of the video. This was actually filmed at the Cellar Door in Washington DC, the same place where the Redneck Jazz Explosion live CD was recorded. If I recall it was 1978.
I bet if one could find a clip of Danny playing when he was in his mid teens, he'd have his incredible chops in place even then. I give a lot of credit to his parents for recognizing his talent when a child and encouraging it. Great video!
Thanks sooo much for uploading this!!! Has to be the earliest recording I have seen to date. Its nice to take a trip back to visit Danny's humble(r) beginnings!!!
Danny Gatton was unique. His playing combined the very best of all the great players who came before him: Les Paul, Carl Perkins, Duane Eddy, Roy Buchanan, Chet Atkins, Joe Maphis, etc. He was the true master of the Telecaster. I once thought I'd never get to see him play...thank God for YouTube.
@Garret00074 Well, shame on me as a Gatton fan, I hadn't heard of Jimmy Bryant. I just checked out a bunch of his stuff with Speedy West. Damn! He clearly was one of Danny's biggest influences. Thanx for hipping me to another fantastic guitarist!
@Garret00074 I know all about him; check out Lover, China Boy, Come ALive Polka, Tico Tico. But the Best of Gatton has to be seen and heard to be believed and that takes ALOT of experience and time TRUST ME.
can somebody please tell me what song this is? I`m a huge Danny Gatton fan and have most of his stuff but i can not identify this song and its driving me LOCO!!!! THANX
Absolutely Wonderful! Perfect pairing, Gatton & Emmons. Love the Cliff Gallup bit at 2:41. In fact, what's not to love about everything Danny did. Such a treat to see him in the RNE days with his version of the Les Paulverizer. Thanks so much for putting this on. Magnificent!
Incredible. Thanks for putting this up. This is the oldest video I have seen yet of Danny & band, going back to late 70's. I hadn't seen footage of him with the Les Paul either, just Tele and Gibson hollow bodies. Amazing how he drops the low E down to an A at the end.

Danny recorded a live CD with this band: "The Redneck Jazz Explosion" I've seen used copies on Amazon, but I think it's also been reissued.
(the legend) Buddy Emmons - Steel Guitar
Scott Taylor - Drums
Steve Wolf - Bass
