you sir and your band mates are rock gods in my book! top 10 all time greatest jams of all time! you guys rolled the 60's in to one rock smash. I was 8 in 1969 and talked about this song for years..anyway right on!!
Great job, David. I loved this song when it was out, and it's really nice that you thought of putting this on for us to see you in this format. A little shorter hair than you had then, but that's true for most of who go back to that time. Really enjoyable.
I'm afraid I never heard this great tune while it was in A-list rotation on radio stations, but in Albuquerque in the 80s, the AOR-ish station I listened to had a daily feature they called "Sixties at six" where they'd play great and (by that time) rather obscure tracks. I lucked out hearing this track and have been a fan of BP ever since then. Thanks for posting and for the great tune.
There is a great new book called "House of Hits: the Story of Houston's Gold Star/Sugarhill Recording Studios" that chronicles the Bubble Puppy's recording studio. The 13th Floor Elevators, Lightnin' Hopkins, Beyonce and many others also recorded at Gold Star. If you're a fan of this time, you'll love the book. I even learned things I didn't know about our studio!
I bought the vinyl album when it was first released (and I still have it). I bought the CD within the last year--so happy to get it.
There are only a few songs that when I hear them, I am instantly transported to another time long ago--when life was such a Gathering Of Promises. MC5's "Kick Out The Jams" is one. "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" is another. Bubble Puppy was a fantastic band--I regret that I never saw them perform live. This video is great--David, you still rock! Thanks for posting it.
Excellent!!! Good to see you still got your chops. I saw Bubble Puppy umpteen times back in the day - Love Street - Vulcan Gas Company etc You guys were really good!!!
This song has been one of my favorites of all time since it was released and sounds so unbelievably great after all these years. I still have the 45 and it was just fantastic to see you do your thing on this video. The song will be with me forever!
Im newly discovering bubble puppy, and im hooked!!! I found you guys by reading the liner notes of a funkadelic cd that sed you guys played together in detroit so I thought I would check you guys out,AMAZING!!! how do I get a hold of an album?
This was a big hit in KANSAS CITY AM radio station W H B This song came in at no. 60 on the top 71 of 1969. I still have the reel to reel when I recorded the program on Jan 1 ,1970.
Pretty cool that you did this. Thanks very much for this. As I found out, this song is not as easy as one might think. The timing definately makes it unique. Its great to be able to send you a little note about it! What kind of stuff are you doing now? Anything I can look into?
i have your single on my jukebox. i was 15 in '85 when i first heard it on an oldies show here in chicago. love the song. now my young kids (8 & 5) love hearing it on the jukebox, or computer, LOUD! thanks!
I managed a band, played this song in battle of the bands all over e.tex and won every one.Right after it Radio played. FSB (First State Banke).Randy Nunnaly.
Later that year Grand Funk toured, came through Dallas, the opening bands trailer was stollen in SherevePort,La. GF had to have a opening act, the local Dallas band filled the slot. The band that could not play was considered electric noise. (Pink Floyd). Would have gotten noticed sooner.
From thee most under-rated album of all time. How about an appearance on Austin City Limits and do the whole album? Today's music scene needs a good kick in the ass!
Absolutely fantastic. I must have watched your video a hundred times. I bought your Demian LP back in the early 70's, and to this day is still one of my favorite albums. I still play it quite regularly. I was so delighted to finally find it on CD (although an import). Windy City is a great tune. I feel as if I grew up with you. Thanks so much for posting this video. Any chance of drumming to a Demian song? Face The Crowd???
I've been wanting to do another vid. Windy City is a great idea. I've always thought my part on Windy City is kinda backwards. I couldn't come up with a backbeat that worked, so I played the snare on the "one" instead. I'll have to learn Windy City, its been so long since we played it.
Face the Crowd was recorded at 3:00 am in the morning at Electric Ladyland studio in L.A. The drum booth was completely "dead". Very hard to get my energy up for that song.
Thanks so much for replying back to me. It's great that you might do another vid. I'm sure I speak for myself
and the 10,000 + other people who have watched this video, that it
would be an honor if you would post another one. Thanks for the interesting info on Windy City and Face the Crowd. WC sure is a complex bluesy number, but your drumming was
astounding on it. Would love to know more about this LP, but have taken enough of your time, which I greatly appreciate.
David. Love the vid. With a top 20 hit, Bubble Puppy must've had a TV appearance, ay? I'd love to see something posted on youtube sometime, if you can get your hands on the footage! Please oh please tell me there's SOMETHING out there!!
Dave, I was 13 when this song came out. I'll forever associate it in my head with my crazy adolescence and my best friend at the time. What an awesome tune. Thanks for posting this; really took me back. How time flies, right? We thought we'd be young forever.
Your the man-- i can play guitar with ya! Ha! you are the drummer! i am from michigan i am 51 years old--i play this song every weekend-you are the man-i play all the riffs and everything, my drummer tries-- you got it!!
A most unbeliveable band. Damn I wish I could have seen you guys play. Alas I was only 10 when this came out. This IS one THE best LPs of all time bar none.
When it came out, me and my buddies were just starting to do gigs and were all blown away by the tune. At 13, I bought the 45 record, and a second one in case the 1st got damaged. I saw Return to Forever in '74 and they sounded to me, like that. I could hear Lenny White and Stanley Clarke doing it. The whole thing sounds like Return to Forever.
Your drumming is incredibly good.
To me, this will always be the first fusion song I heard.
Thanks! Return to Forever and Lenny White were a big influence on me later. "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (1973)" was a year or so after Bubble Puppy called it quits so it didn't influence my playing at the time. I never heard anyone compare us to fusion before, but I guess since parts of Hot Smoke are in 7/4 I can see that. I loved the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Did you ever try to cover Hot Smoke? I would like to hear it if you did.
I never did HS&S, but at 13 was doing Purple Haze and the like. The town I was in at the time in Nova Scotia played C&W except for an hour/day, and that's where I heard HS&S. I went to Zeller's, a department store and in a corner they had maybe 1/50 of records in my back room, that's where I bought 2 45's for 90 cents each. I'm jealous your Dad was a drummer, what a boost! Why fusion? Hmmm... mostly instrumental, the punches, the muffled C part. Thanx!
I was only a one year old when this song was created, I just heard this song on the radio about a week ago on WKLH and I was thinking what a great song that is. There was a caller who talked about buying the record and was so stoked to hear it again. How lucky he was to be a teen in the time of great music and classic cars! Great to see your still jammin, that song must be fun to rock out to.
Born in 1950. Made your album into a disc and have it in my changer in the car. In fact I played parts of it today. I saw a picture of you guys in the rock and roll hall of fame with a short story as a one hit wonder about three years ago. How bout doing the Hippiefest next year. You'll steal the show !
Mr. Fore, I think I came close to meeting you in Austin about 25 years ago. (I'd seen you in '71 in Odessa; you opened for the Grass Roots, (but I left after you guys. Caught Todd a few years later with Rusty Weir.) I was telling a buddy, Jim Callam, how much I liked you guys, and he said "David works here at a club, and I can introduce you!" Had to move back west, so I missed you "by that much". Great to see that "Demian" is now out - I'm waiting for mine right now. Regards, Scott
.........beyond awesome.......THIS is music....heard it back in 69 when I was 15...bought a copy of it....wish I still had it...BUBBLE PUPPPPEEEEEEEE.......unbelievable
I still remember Bubble Pupply. Do you remember Love Street in Houston. David, your One of my favorite Drummers. Looks like your still Kicking in Austin? Hows Todd and Roy? This is from Little Deb P. Moving Sidewalks and Thirteen Floor Elevators used to be the weekend line up. Good Times, Good timessss.
You guys were great, I saw you twice at the KC hall in Alice around 69 or 70, still have the album I got as a door prize, got the CD a number of years ago, "Gathering of Promises" is one of the best albums of all time. Thanks for the great music.
Dave great to see your still out there. I was happy to find this video. I was 10 when this song came out but I got to tell you Gathering of Promises is one of the best LPs of all time. The follow up to Bubble Puppy (Demian) was another great LP as well. Thanks for the music.
Finally called me. He broke 2 main vertabrae in his neck. They had to go through the back of his neck and fuse them together. He wasn't able to speak for the last 6 weeks. Any donations would be appreciated even if it is only 5 or 10 bucks. He will pay back. It is mainly for pain medication. All donations can be sent to Roy Cox 3308 South Oklahoma Dr Oklahoma City OK 73129 and must be made by money order made out to Roy Cox.
David, I love this song a lot and your performance is such a huge part of why this song will make people happy forever. Thanks for this video, what a treat.
Dave, What a rush. I was another Corpus Christi kid that idolized Bubble Puppy everywhere from the Stardust Ballroom and Love Street in Corpus to Mother Earth, the Back Room and Continental Club (reunion) in Austin. You guys really had it. YOur live shows generated some of the greatest electrical music storms ever. Kevin Dunne, Austin, TX
Get the "Fuel 2000" release of our LP "A Gathering of Promises". It has the LP and ALL our singles, including the mono version of Hot Smoke, which is the best sounding.
That song will always sound great and you are an awesome drummer. I have some wonderful memories of the sixties & seventies when I was in Corpus Christi, Texas. We were good friends. You play even better now. Vickie Butler
I hope you're still playing out live somewhere because you still got it brother! I heard this only once when I was 16 and went right out, bought the 45, brought it home and learned Rob's lead pretty much note-for-note. Did he use an E-Bow on that opening note? I've never duplicated that sound with feedback. I worked in a band that covered that tune back in the late 70s. I remember the Rugbys 'You I'. Tough song, but their lead guitarist couldn't hold his own against Rob in a million years.
THANK YOU SO MUCH !! David Fore!!! Heard HSS in the car today on XM Radio. I rocked out!! Haven't heard that song in years!! I had goose bumps and tears!! I was 16 when that song came out!! Loved it!! HIPPIE CHICK and proud of it!! Can't wait to somehow get that on my I tunes!!!
Three songs from around the same time period that run together in my mind - "Apricot Brandy" by Rhinocerous (an instrumental), "You, I" by the Rugbys, and "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" by the Bubble Puppy. Great to hear this one again!
CORRECTION--When The Bubble Puppy contracted with ABC Records they changed their name to Demian (not D-a-m-i-e-n as I wrote below).."Face the Crowd" is my favorite on that album.
Glad to see you are still jamming on the drums. I worked with you many moons ago at Cypress. We once jammed at one of the maintenance guys houses on "Stranglehold" which was great. I played bass. I had not played in many years at that time, but it helped to get me back into playing with bands again. Thanks for helping me rediscover the bass! As you know I really dug D-Day as well. Hope to see you around town someday.
The flip side of the '45 was a song called 'Lonely'I believe. The guitar solo by Rod Prince (correct me if I'm wrong), rivals todays shredders... and yesterdays masters. Extremely awesome song you need to hear if you haven't even by today's standards.
Saw this band (somewhere in Austin) Fall-1973. Ouch we're old! They released one self titled vinyl album under a different tag--Damien. Still have it in the library.....
This is so exciting to see. David Fore, thanks for sharing this. I still have the 45 and wish I could find this great tune for download! BTW, were you as relaxed in the recording studio? :-)
This is Dickie Malone the bass player/singer. My music site is westernelectro dot com down. My current band is THE HULLEY GULLEYS. I have been in the music business for 42 years, never had a real job. I owned a live music club in Houston from 1992 to 2002, THE FABOULS SATELLITE LOUNGE,and have played in or managed or produced bands since 1965. Stanely Moore and I were best friends in the first grade in Corpus were i was born. PEACE
NOW HEAR THIS ! I heard, "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" on the radio yesterday! I was driving and darned near went off the road due to a major flashback! ha! ha! It was probably a Twinkie flashback as I was only 14 when this came out. Great and fabulous and wonderful to hear again. Hearing it again inspired me to look on YouTube. Great to see you here Dave and ditto on the drumming kudos. All The best!!!
hi David, thanks for the video. still have the 45 on the juke box in the rec room. my kids who are now in their 20's remember the song as they grew up on "my" music. keep it up ! Van Z
Absolutely my all time favorite song. Must have played the 45 at least 1000 times back then and still can't get enough. Saw Bubble Puppy at the Cobra in Hastings, Michigan late 60's? Great memories!
Was in a band from Austin in the early 70's, Travis Potter got us into recording studio in east Texas, Vidor or nearby, studio burned down before we got the final tapes...any idea how to get in touch with Potter family to get lead on whether anything survived the fire??
Oh yeah .... memories. I played in a band that opened for you guys in Victoria. Ya'll were the best band I ever heard live. When you came out for a sound check, I never heard a click or count, and you broke into Elizabeth and NAILED the studio version .... awesome!!
What happened after Bubble Puppy? Did you play with The Explosives and Roky for a while in Austin?
Dave those AMPS were GREAT SOUNDING amps. I'm of the opinion that todays amps can't quite capture the 'warmth' of the older amps like those...
Do you remember playing the little town of Victoria? Most people haven't even heard of it. When I was there, it was a town of 10,000. Now, it's a town of over 60,000 people. Of course, we're mostly old farts as well...lol..isn't time fun when you're having flies?
The Kustom amps were also very comfortable to sleep on in the van on long road trips, in addition to sounding great. That's Rod's Kustom on Hot Smoke.
This brings back some memories! You guys were the best. I had this 45 but my cousin borrowed it and never gave it back. So now I have the CD! Watching this video is a thrill.
We played the Teen Canteen many time for Ricky Weir was it? The radio station in SA wore out their copy of H.Smoke on the air so we would play anywhere they asked!
wow. . .you should see the smile on my face. . .I had the 45 back. . .well. . you know how far back. There were some great bands in . . .Fever Tree, y'all, Moving Sidewalks, 13th Floor Elevators, and in northeast Texas (Tyler) there were Nitzinger and what was that other band Bugs was in??. . .oh yeah, Mouse and the Traps. Did y'all ever record at Robin Hood Brian's studio?
David , Very cool. Chris Gerniottis referred me to this clip. Bubble Puppy are one of the most underrated groups of their time....But , is there a video for "Too Young To Date"? John.
this is great. i can't possib;y describe how much i dig your album gathering of promises. i rate it in the top 10 albums ever, not to go on or anything. i dig your drumming
Thanks David, just want you to know how much Bubble Puppy's music and lyrics mean to me. Roy's bass/vocals, Todd/Rod guitars/harmonies and you of course wrapping it up with perfect accented time signatures. It embodies the psychedelic Texas sunshine and warm breeze. I have every song and cherish each one, I also have Demian LP. You 4 guys created on solid explosion of music in a short period of time and then it was extinguished forever. Magical days of creativity indeed.
Roy sang lead on this one. Rod, Todd, and Roy divided up the lead singing chores. Usually Rod and Roy wrote together, Todd by himself. I wasn't writing at the time.
David thanks for recreating this, I would love to see it on an acoustic set. One of the all time great psychedelic songs. I will always respect your drumming! Wish you guys would reform!
Great to watch you play Hot Smoke again. Some of my best memories are of attending Bubble Puppy concerts in Corpus so I could emulate your style of playing. Joe Whitenton
I don't remember seeing the Bad Seeds play. I have a film of them (playing on Teen Time) on the site I created for the SFG Gang. I will always be thankful to you and Stan. It gave me a real desire to play in a band. I fed myself for a long time with a drumset and still enjoy playing now and then. My best memory of Rod Prince....I found him sleeping in our flowerbed on Meadowbrrok street in CC...it's amazing any of us lived through those days.
Hooray! You played at my sr prom at the Warwick in Houston -- I graduate from Clear Creek in 1970. We all loved you. I still do! Rock on! Peace! another David

Everyone,
There is a great new book called "House of Hits: the Story of Houston's Gold Star/Sugarhill Recording Studios" that chronicles the Bubble Puppy's recording studio. The 13th Floor Elevators, Lightnin' Hopkins, Beyonce and many others also recorded at Gold Star. If you're a fan of this time, you'll love the book. You might have a tough time getting vinyl, but Charley Records just released a new Bubble Puppy CD complete with the BP story.
There are about 20 re-releases, so you should snag one, and some have all our singles as well as the LP. Get one of those.

You guys were great, I saw you twice at the KC hall in Alice around 69 or 70, still have the album I got as a door prize, got the CD a number of years ago, "Gathering of Promises" is one of the best albums of all time. Thanks for the great music.

Thanks. I remember playing Alice. Surpisingly it was a good hall for us to play. I think I even had a cassette of the gig. Alas, it has disappeared.

Dave great to see your still out there. I was happy to find this video. I was 10 when this song came out but I got to tell you Gathering of Promises is one of the best LPs of all time. The follow up to Bubble Puppy (Demian) was another great LP as well. Thanks for the music.

David-
Question?
"Has the idea of a BP reunion ever come up between you and the other members of the Band?"
If yes, any idea of when this might happen?
Thanks

Finally called me. He broke 2 main vertabrae in his neck. They had to go through the back of his neck and fuse them together. He wasn't able to speak for the last 6 weeks. Any donations would be appreciated even if it is only 5 or 10 bucks. He will pay back. It is mainly for pain medication. All donations can be sent to Roy Cox 3308 South Oklahoma Dr Oklahoma City OK 73129 and must be made by money order made out to Roy Cox.

Dave, What a rush.

Not many people remember the Rugbys, You,I.
vj1062 4 years ago
Three songs from around the same time period that run together in my mind - "Apricot Brandy" by Rhinocerous (an instrumental), "You, I" by the Rugbys, and "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" by the Bubble Puppy. Great to hear this one again!
rslitman 4 years ago
CORRECTION--When The Bubble Puppy contracted with ABC Records they changed their name to Demian (not D-a-m-i-e-n as I wrote below).."Face the Crowd" is my favorite on that album.

Glad to see you are still jamming on the drums. I worked with you many moons ago at Cypress. We once jammed at one of the maintenance guys houses on "Stranglehold" which was great. I played bass. I had not played in many years at that time, but it helped to get me back into playing with bands again. Thanks for helping me rediscover the bass! As you know I really dug D-Day as well. Hope to see you around town someday.
shepoopi 4 years ago
The flip side of the '45 was a song called 'Lonely'I believe. The guitar solo by Rod Prince (correct me if I'm wrong), rivals todays shredders... and yesterdays masters. Extremely awesome song you need to hear if you haven't even by today's standards.

Saw this band (somewhere in Austin) Fall-1973. Ouch we're old! They released one self titled vinyl album under a different tag--Damien. Still have it in the library.....

Lazarus1140 5 years ago
Dave those AMPS were GREAT SOUNDING amps. I'm of the opinion that todays amps can't quite capture the 'warmth' of the older amps like those...
Do you remember playing the little town of Victoria? Most people haven't even heard of it. When I was there, it was a town of 10,000. Now, it's a town of over 60,000 people. Of course, we're mostly old farts as well...lol..isn't time fun when you're having flies?
Guitarschmoozer 5 years ago
The Kustom amps were also very comfortable to sleep on in the van on long road trips, in addition to sounding great. That's Rod's Kustom on Hot Smoke.
davidfore 5 years ago
I remembered doing an ad for Kustom amps back in the 60s. I even found the picture of our old band demo'n them on stage.

Billykid514 5 years ago
David, who sang lead vocal on this song? Did Roy sing lead on most tunes or Rod? Thanks
Billykid514 5 years ago
Roy sang lead on this one. Rod, Todd, and Roy divided up the lead singing chores. Usually Rod and Roy wrote together, Todd by himself. I wasn't writing at the time.

I used to go watch Stan play all the time at the Carosel Lounge. He was my hero.
We had some good shows in Corpus. Did you ever go see The Bad Seeds? They were awesome.
David
davidfore 5 years ago
Hello David,
I don't remember seeing the Bad Seeds play. I have a film of them (playing on Teen Time) on the site I created for the SFG Gang. I will always be thankful to you and Stan. It gave me a real desire to play in a band. I fed myself for a long time with a drumset and still enjoy playing now and then. My best memory of Rod Prince....I found him sleeping in our flowerbed on Meadowbrrok street in CC...it's amazing any of us lived through those days.
jsw1953 5 years ago
Do you have a digitized version of the Bad Seeds show? I'd love to put it up here on my youtube site.
My first memory of Rod is of him playing drums in Buzz Adamack's garage with that german army helmet on. Funny.
