Wow, There must be a safer way to do that!!! Love the fact the crew has no pfd on, Ive been a captain on tugs for quite sometime, and I can tell you that i would not be doing that, ever at that speed. Major accident waiting to happen!!!
Am a tug captain in port of antwerp belgium and this is does happen more then you think with the time line that lots of the container ships have, if they loose 1 hour they have to make it up otherwise there to late at there other destination.
And the sea captain 25 years your reaction is unbiliveble, your a stupid guy and the only thing you can do is manuver if you have much space, i like you to try in the locks in Antwerp, then we gonna see what your skills are
This is excellent!! - I train tug operators, and I have never seen this type of "run-ahead-of-the-stem" headline pickup documented so well on video . . Particularly at that ship speed!! . . . Sadly I will be using this to demonstrate utterly reckless operation, but what can I say . . It's your boat, and obviously your crew doesn't care, so have a great day . .
its just Freakin amazing that a ship that large, and that top heavy (as it appears to the untrained eye) could actually stay a float. Those two ships are still several meters apart, but still freakin amazing. what I can't understand is, why is the RO/RO car carrier traveling so fast, aren't they in port already, or near it...?
Wow that is a crazy speed to be connecting up. Having said tht i know what some of these Pilots can be like and that was very skillful handling of the Tug by her skipper. Nice work.
Dangerous practice ,years ago I used to work with a tug schipper who did the same .I was only sixteen deckhand in Rotterdam. We connected once to a ship at this speed and our wire snapped wipped over my head very lucky to survive.I know there are pressures for a tug schipper and some pilots think they are above the crew on a tug boat.
They are ready done it so it does not matter, you can debate it all you want but it is already done. Nothing happend and your expertise does not matter to these men. They work for me and will do as I say. Thank you.
@segur15. If you were captain for 25 years i dont need to explain you that this is a job. Pilot says "one tugboat foreward, tug's line" and that's enought. It's safer connect at 6 Kn, but that's the game.
I realize that maybe you were taxidriver not captain, because you should know that the speed of the manouvre if fixed by pilot, not by any suicidal tugboat captain. And a captain must be shamed about use that languaje, if you dont give a shit about my opinion, please shut up.
@peterlatraca Pilot says sink your boat would you do it?
Its the captain of each ship's responsibility to ensure the safety of that ship and crew...
so saying pilot says is a sad excuse.
That said, @segur15 that's the difference between tug drivers and sea captains... sea captains see how its done around the globe, as opposed to his own little marina for a tug driver.
I dont know the first thing about driving a tugboat, but that cant be safe. Engine dies, loose power, your S.O.L. . Hate to be the guy on the tug that falls overboard.
After watching 1 & 2 of this video I saw so many thing that could go wrong from engine failure someone falling overboard the rope being lost and getting sucked under the ferry etc...
Never seen a hook up at speed like that before... what was the reason? I'm assuming there was a problem or something which required this to be done under power like that.
Awesome video. Stem shot on a tow line is real towboating. Disregard any negative comments on this video. Those people have absolutely no idea what running a work boat and ship assist is all about. What are you supposed to tell the pilot? "Sorry Cap, I can't do that"? No, you get the job done. Period.
I'm a pilot AND a tug master and there is no point in connecting to a vessel at that speed, especially if you are at full power, just to maintain position. What good are you to the pilot if you are smashed up? If the pilot has to maintain that speed to retain control then you need to wait before hook up. But, don't listen to me. Let's see what the court of inquiry says....
@pilotg2426 i agree with you, the tugboat isnt usefull if it's crash against the hull of the ship. But even without any accident at this speed the effect of the tugboat over the ship is almost none.
The high speed is justified by local pilots due strong winds some days specially in autumm, but some days like the day of the video is only to save some time.
how else are you supposed to get a up line through the bullnose of a moving ship?? believe it or not people, this is how its done, those guys probably do it a several times a day at least and judging from their speed and efficiency, they're pretty decent at it. its one of the many things that separates professional mariners from weekend warriors on yachts.
took many chances for my blood....just a mattter of time before you make the front page of the daily news...TUG BOAT RAN OVER BY SHIP... Tug Taft Beach
Amazing. There are dangers here eh? Like getting snagged in the tow line and having a leg torn off or going overboard. Great to watch people at their work and knowing what they are doing. If lines part, do they lash back as the strain comes off (flailing back on the after deck)? The hull of the car carrier is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. But its boxy uppers are ghastly-looking. What naval architect could bring themselves to put such ugliness on top of such beauty?!
ure takin some chance buddy. if ure relying on a rising tide and a wave from the bow to give u an extra knot.. wat about if u av engine failure.. u must av a get out and if ure going 100% on the engines u dont av any extra to get u out of trouble..its a matter of time b4 u get caught..
The max speed of this tug is only 12.5 knt, but we got the advantage of the raising tide and you must take account that we are "surfing" on the wave caused by the bulbous bow of the car-carrier
@peterlatraca you guys would be fucked if your engines fail at that speed. possible capsize then youd probably be dragged under that huge fucker and drowned.

Well, if the ship would go that speed while we had to connect the tug, we would not come in front of that ship. That has to be like 11knots or so.....
If the tug engines fail for a few seconds it's byebye tug....
nice video though !
