  • I've launched a few of these balloons but I've yet to seen one bursting from the ground before. I normally lose sight of them shortly after launch. Great catch!

Can I be noisy and ask what kind of setup you where using, and how you knew where to point?

  • I've watched quite a few burst over the years. The red parachute at the top of the tether doesn't open because at 20-miles altitude there is no air for it to catch. The radiosonde and parachute approaches the speed of sound when falling until it gets to the upper troposphere and encounters wind resistance. The parachute then inflates and things slow down. You can follow the descent until the chute enters the Earth's shadow and disappears (for evening launches).

  • how did u happen to film this at the exact time it blew up? can u show me a nebula?

  • @kenziejoon ... you just keep watching as the balloon rises and pops. The original size of the balloon is about 6-feet in diameter. Just before it pops it is the size of a barn. That's because the internal pressure is able to expand and the outside air pressure dwindles.

  • that's really cool man! if you get anymore good ones id love to see them!

  • awesome!

  • thanks phil ! i hope to catch another.

  • excellent video.well caught!
