This is hauntingly gorgeous, I'd loved Tori Amos for the longest, since early 90's and high school. I have never seen her live, I'd love to....and I've always loved "Running up that Hill," this is beautiful, the magic and talent of Tori, how she entertwines these songs, just beautiful
Came here not expecting much and am absolutely blow away by the artistry she exhibited. An absolutely beautiful rendition with so much heartfelt passion.
I was actually quite surprised when I was listening to Kate Bush's new version of "This Woman's Work" on Director's Cut, played on the rhodes...it sounded very, very Tori-like.
Flat out Kate was an influence on Tori. Who cares about comparisons! This is an amazing performance with an ODE to Kate! That is AWESOME! To mesh these 2 songs together, pure GENIUS on Tori's part!!! PERIOD!
always loved tori's vocals and this is an amazing cover of a frigging cosmic track, just wish the twat that feels whoooaing at every opportunity would STFU!
I can understand people comparing them both, if you're not really into them there might seem to be a lot of similarities. Of course, when you go a little deeper you find lots of differences.
And saying that this cover wouldn't sell if it would have been the original: it's not an original, it's a cover, made from tori's point of view. It's not made to sell as an original. Whether you like it or not is personal. Some people don't like the original either. :-)
If Tori would have recorded this song instead of Kate, it would never had made a penny. How can anyone even compare Tori with Kate. Like comparing Menudo with the Beatles. Glad Tori has her fans, but really I don't get the fuss. Kate is a true musicians artist. Sorry, but Tori is just too Muzak for me...
If Tori can pay homage to Kate why can't we emulate that and pay each similar respect. I understand the inadequacies of the similar and thus indistinguishable argument but the likeness as pointed out by Rafael is not necessarily disrepectful either. I listened to Kate before Tori and now I listen to Florence too because they all reflect the kind of music I like and I hear them in each other. And as for the fans, let them scream,(I would and have) it's probably better than 'singing' along! :)
I started listening to Kate before I heard about Tori, and still I don't see the comparisons. But the funny thing is, the other day I was play Kate's "Mother Stands for Comfort" and my roommate got so excited because he thought I was playing some Tori Amos.
Both women are beautiful and talented. My biggest wish is for a Tori and Kate collaboration. Imagine these two on the stage! It's like the parting of the red seas.
@bbreuning1 I feel the same way. They're doing the same thing with Florence Welch and Natasha Khan now, and I feel like it belittles them all as artists because they're all different.
Some people just can't be bothered to figure out what the differences are.
i don't think i know anyone who loves tori's music, that doesn't love kate's.
there are few who love kate but doesn't love tori.
I think they're both great, and i think that the comparison is inevitable,
although they are different artists from different places, they are both excellent vocalists and composers, and are very expressive both in music and performance. and something about them is kind of a defiance against the standard singing and rhyming.
@DroneBzzz I heard this version before Warehouse 13. While that episode was undeniably fantastic, and their choice of "Running Up that Hill" made their finale all the more heart wrenching, I muted the episode and played this version over it my second time through. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the point of "God" started right when the Steve thing was revealed. It was very sadistic but also a million times more powerful, more saddening...
i've always thought the tori/kate comparison was kinda misogynistic....'well we already have one kinda weird fairy woman....why do we need another' in the end, their likenesses are superficial...the core of tori's music is a push against intense southern religious supression of sexuality where kate is very much centered in the celtic mythos. in the end, i always found these comparisons as attacks against both women and an attempt to marginalize both their musical outputs in one fell swoop.
@TearInTheirHands Absolutely! You are so right. And I can love them both, so much greatness from both of them, without needing to have any logical relation with each other.
@bbruening1 Yes a lot of critics are narrow minded but did you consider that maybe some critics are making the comparison in an attempt to give Tori Amos a compliment? As a huge Kate Bush fan, when I first heard "Little Earthquakes" it transported me to a place that up until then, only the most sublime/otherworldly Kate moments could. Emotions that I didn't know existed etc. I understand some of the comparisons but I also understand your frustration. I love them both.. Hope all is well.Take Care
I get your main point and agree. But there are strong similarities. Both Kate Bush and Tori Amos write their own material. Both are very expressive. Both artists make music that is accessible (and popular) but not mainstream. Both are great storytellers.
The whole ‘Celtic’ Kate Bush is a bit of a stretch. She wrote songs about Hitler, computers, Houdini... Likewise, Tori Amos wrote about a lot more than dealing or reacting to religious suppression of sexuality.
@rafaelherschel Point taken. But a youtube comment is a blurb not a dissertation and clarity is sometimes sacrificed for brevity. I was not trying to say that either artist is one-sided and bound by the labels "celtic" and "southern", but those two descriptive labels seem like the underlying factors that informed their work for the longest. They have both moved beyond their backgrounds and yet seem to return to them over and over again. For me, this may be their greatest similarity.
@bbruening1 “But a youtube comment is a blurb not a dissertation and clarity is sometimes sacrificed for brevity.” Well put! I understand what you’re saying and agree. It’s just that these two artists (and a few others) have something that makes them stand out: the bravery to commit to a performance and make music that doesn’t belong to a specific genre.
@bbruening1 well they are both ethereal musical geniuses for either to be compared to the other is a compliment to both . bjork on the other hand is in a class all her own
@bbruening1 I grew up with Kate Bush and have a deep appreciation for both Kate Bush and Tori Amos. Are you over intellectualising, trying to simply say, there is room for both? A form of mental masturbation perhaps. It worked because all those other people are impressed by you stating the obvious too. Youtube-Catering to the lowest common denominator. Entitled to your opinion, just stunned by the disproportionate response to the obvious.
@bbruening1 I think the comparison more likely stems from the fact they're both female singer song writers whos primery instrument is the piano, who both sing in the higher registry and whos song topics are often eccentric, deeply emotional or both. With your interpritation I think you're bringing more to the table than the comparison does.
@MsFloweryapron Your comment is ignorant for so many reasons, and for the record I am a bigger Kate fan than Tori fan. First of all, Kate Bush is an influence on Tori and it isn't like anyone is hiding that fact. This cover is clearly meant as homage. If Tori were trying to pass this off as her own then you'd have a point. Are "you Brits" bright enough to understand that or should I draw you a fucking picture?
My two favourite artists! it doesn't get much better than this. To be able to sing Kates songs you have to understand the message, and not try and sing it like Kate, cos nobody will ever be able too. Tori is a legend in her own right, and makes this a Tori track - Fabulous.
@DroneBzzz Yeah the placement of this song in that episode was chilling... it's why I'm tubing all the versions of this song now, gonna arrange a cover. cheers.
People can scream all they want anywhere. Why do it when everyone has spent money and stood in line for half a day? Cuz its a power trip? Go to a Briber concert.
OMG! her tank top at 6:06...I have that!! I wasn't keen on it but now I'm going to wear it and pretend I'm Tori (just kiddin) but still pretty cool! :)
Wow, this is the first time I've heard Tori do a Kate Bush cover. It's ironic that when I first heard Tori in 91 her voice did remind me a little of Kate's but as I got more into Tori I found that comparison ended. Both women have a sensuality to their voices that are like...well...sorry, can't think of the words to do them justice. Just listen.
@dm7ify Weirdly enough, at the Tori concert I went to in Australia: the crowd was as silent as the grave all through the songs and only rallied in spirits inbetween. We go to concerts to listen to music, here, not to our own voices going "YEAHAHGHWHOOOO!" like an idiot. ;)
@dm7ify Funny, I'm a Tori Amos fan and was wishing the same thing at her concert 2 nights ago. Grown men shouting YEAAAHHHHH! doesn't add to her pauses. It just fucks up the song. I'm there to hear her, not you.
My goodness, I have heard many versions of this, none anything like one another, faith and the muse, placebo, kerli, kate of course, within temptation, tori here, and purple crush.... what is so wonderful is that none of them sound anything like each other but all of them are BEAUTIFUL! I love this song and her rendition is lovely!
@yasmincassie She did a whole album of covers. Strange Little Girls was an album full of covers sung from her view. The original songs were all male performed. The original song Strange Little Girl is one of my favourites from the Stranglers and Tori did a great job with it, just like she does with pretty much everything she touches. :)
Thanks for posting such a wonderful piece! Kate and Tori are incomparable to any other female singer out there. . And @jamesdoulane: You put it perfectly: "This is God".
Sweet mother! I didn't notice that she went back to Running at the end...had to rewind and listen again to how she did it. She's such a friggin goddess.
Kate is clearly more adventurous and influential but I prefer Tori a bit more. Both are far ahead of any other female artist, as far as I'm concerned.
I can't even count how many times I left my jaw on the desk because of the amazing connection of those both legendary songs... If it will go further like this my dentist will become a millionare.
i love this pairing. and i still love and respect tori. admitedly, i haven't followed her on every musical journey she's chosen to embark on. but, live, even the songs that i have little or no interest in, take on a life of their own. i've always really enjoyed that about tori. she does remind me of kate bush, as well as contemporariesl pj harvey and bjork.and i see a lot of laura nyro in her, too. but, whatever tori does, it's clearly her own thing.
Tori Amos is a very good rainny day music! when i drive and see the rain drops on the windshield as i listen to any of her songs is the best feeling! THUMBS ME UP if you agree!
About a year ago I found YouTube video of Kate and Tori performing two songs together, it was amazing and of course now it is now missing - I HATE that they keep removing stuff :o( I love this performance - thanks so much for the post
@Hienama damn right, shes working with joanna newsom and others right now, so why not.. in fact sod it, why not get tori, kate, paula cole and i dunno, thom yorke ALL in the studio together !! ;)
Thanks for uploading. I heard this back in L.A. and couldn't forget it. She said somewhere in the evening, "if you were living in L.A a while ago and saw a red head girl in traffic and give you the finger, that was me."
Kate..A Unicum in music history...So damn good...a GENIUS

i love this pairing. and i still love and respect tori. admitedly, i haven't followed her on every musical journey she's chosen to embark on. but, live, even the songs that i have little or no interest in, take on a life of their own. i've always really enjoyed that about tori. she does remind me of kate bush, as well as contemporariesl pj harvey and bjork.and i see a lot of laura nyro in her, too. but, whatever tori does, it's clearly her own thing.

I've never heard a more perfect integration in creative genius by two enigmatic artists - haunting...
"And if I only could, I'd make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places."

I'm glad you posted a warning. I love Kate and Tori both and I hate the haters who don't believe in love for everyone.

Tori Amos is a very good rainny day music! when i drive and see the rain drops on the windshield as i listen to any of her songs is the best feeling! THUMBS ME UP if you agree!

@benisdown I love putting on Venus when it is cold and overcast with dark gray clouds. Josephine is perfect.

@benisdown I also get out The Cure when it rains, too!

This is amazing! I knew Tori was inspired by "Hounds of Love", but I didn't know she's actually covered this song.

Thanks for uploading. I heard this back in L.A. and couldn't forget it. She said somewhere in the evening, "if you were living in L.A a while ago and saw a red head girl in traffic and give you the finger, that was me."

The perfect marriage of my favourites :)
It could only be better if it flowed into Kate Bush on stage singing God instead lol.
Let them try each other on for a mashup of goodness :)
