  • aaww shes a cute model we need ppl like this that acually go to japan to find interest in its culture

...unlike weabos who CLAIM to have an interst in the culture when all it rly is an interest in anime and the need to want to BE japanese!

  • 英語がうまいですね。

  • Comment removed

  • Her voice and the way she talks is so cute!

  • I'm glad you had an interesting time in Tokyo.

  • tokio was most exciting

  • lovely baby, welcome to japan

  • model...im going there to host

    i leave in 8 days

  • Aboot Tokyo...I smell a Canadian...lost in translation. Those black spiky things are sea urchins, by the way. The fortune slips are called Omikuji. You shouldn't ring the bell just for kicks. Oh well, foreigners will always be foreigners.

  • your a foreigner too, and dont expect someone to absorb a totally different culture within a week...thats just unheard of

  • you can call me next time, you do not need to find place to stay.

  • the best way to understand the culture and people of a country is to party and get shit faced with them, and I'm being serious. It is the truth.

    -An American Overseas

  • Lmao, I'll remember this!!

  • borrrinnnnggggg, so a foreign girl is going to come here for 2 weeks and show us "what Japan is really like"? Add to that a crappy taping job, yay for u!

  • HAAAAAAA HAAAA nice there man , you gave her hard . !!!

  • i think i saw a ghost in ur vid

  • you're a pretty girl, but the camera was quite shaky :S

  • くそくらえ

  • uahuhauhuha...

    shame on you

  • These anti-americans comments are so funny. What she ( a canadian) said wasn't so damnably wrong but haters must nitpick, I guess.

  • i'm reading the comments. it's funny, i don't think people interested in other countries are nearly as obsessive and condescending as many that are into japan. i think it has to do a lot with the language. since you have to really know the culture to speak it well, people like to think that they are then only ones who really understand and they love an opportunity to show it. i'm not saying all people interested in japan just most.

  • Well, you really need to understand any culture to speak it's language fluently. I found that out going to and living in Japan. Just as I did living in China and Germany. It takes years and years. Besides, the Japanese language is logical and easier to speak than say English, which by the way has over 3400 irregular verb spellings among other crazy things. Don't get me started on pronunciation.

  • To speak Japanese; yes... but to learn Japanese... you need to learn how to read and write Kanji (Han [chinese] Characters), Katakana, and Hiragana. Thats an awful lot to learn.. Especially since there are over 6000 symbols in Kanji. Basically you have 3 languages packed into one... compared to English which requires you to learn the alphabet which is used to form words.

  • No, to read a news paper for instance, you need only learn 2000 Kanji. It is a little less, but I actually forget the number. All graduates at schools in Japan know that many. And yes, it is 3 packed into one. But then again, they can explain the same think in a 1/3 of the time that it takes an english writer. Unless of course, they are using sonkeigo or other polite forms which can be longer.

  • Thats my problem, I was raised talking at home, but at school I learned english. Then after I failed 2nd grade we moved away and now I wanna relearn it cause I forgot like... all of it. But im trying to learn stupid Kanji... I think its cool, but whats wrong with writting everything in Hiragana??? lol "Lets make a alphabet system guys, oh, but know what would be funny, make it so everyone has to learn the alphabet and randomly over 3000 characters! Its the perfect trick!" omg...

  • I actually found an advantage to using Chinese characters. Its pretty ridiculous to have it on top of an alphabet system, but if you have the correct programs, its one of the fastest languages for typing and it uses a lot less paper. After all, typing a "a" can get you a super complicated symbol that is an entire word in one box.

  • I dont think it uses less paper... Not to mention you cant count on the auto kanji to be right, you actually have to learn to read and write them, which instead of like in English 26 or in Japanese alphabet there is like 50 something, but no, lets make over 5000 characters and remember them all! =D

It dosent use less paper, look.

I like dogs. 犬が好きです。 For this sentence it uses more paper. Its just annoying to learn them all, but I still think its REALLY cool! lol

  • It depends on what you are typing. Also, a lot of English words are more then 1 syllable. Microsoft word 12 point font 2.0 spacing: I can fit about 800 kanji on a page while I can only fit about 327 English words on a page. Also, once you are familiar with the autokanji and the computer learns what kanji you use the most, you can type much faster.

By the way, I'm arguing from the Hanzi perspective not kanji. I haven't learned how to type kanji yet. So I maybe wrong.

  • You can use auto kanji on computer and never need to learn Kanji and just write on the computer right? So how about when they write back to you? You cant read it cause you dont know Kanji. You cant BS knowing how to write or read a language, Kanji is hard and not as effective as a alphebet system. It takes almost twice as long for Japanese students to learn to read cause this. In english, you can spell anything, sound out any word. In Japanese you cant read it if you dont know the symbol.

  • Umm, no I'm saying I don't know how to use autokanji on a computer. I never bothered to try typing japanese since I never needed to. But I can use Han Zi. In other words, I regularly use the computer to type in Chinese. I'm arguing that the system of using symbols instead of words is faster when typing it out but more difficult. And you can use less symbols because you can fit 800 symbols versus 327 words. By the way, you can sound out a English word but won't be able to understand it.

  • No I mean, in English if you said, "Mom whats that?" "Thats a table" (or whatever)

You can write table because you know how to write all 26 letters and know their sounds. In Japanese if you dont know the symbol for bird or sky you cant write it or read it. Lets be real, I like Japanese, but theres no way its easier or more efficient to learn like 5000 kanji (This goes for Chinese as well) and 2 alphebet systems than it is to learn 26 letters... Thats my point.

  • Wow, you responded fast. Yea, I was never trying to refute that. Just trying to find a place where a retarded system of symbols actually has an advantage.

  • Sorry for sounding like I hate the system, I think for the systems time period, (Chinese, which Kanji is traditional Chinese). The Chinese had like the first writting system in the world. But as the world has moved into modern times they basically kept it the same, ya they made simplified Chinese, but its not that much easier compared to English or Italian or something with a alphebet. If I hated Japanese language I wouldent learn it lol

  • "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and"

    versus

    "欲免后世再遭今代人类两度身历惨不堪言之战祸,"

As you can see, symbols cut down on space needed. Japanese probably won't see as much gain since they have a number of hiragana mixed in.

  • Most people just want to go to Japan, because their favorite anime was made there.

  • yea dats true. its annoying.

  • Most people want to go to Japan, because it is beautiful. It has an amazingly rich, deep, culture. The people are (mostly) respectful. The city and it's citizens are respectful.

  • now i reaaally wanna go to japan :|

about five years when im twenty :D

  • YAY. im going there this summer!

  • she's canadian yay! and she is so cute and nice!

  • r u only japanese model or u are all over the world??

    i dont know if u understand :)

  • LOLKINS THIS WUZ LIEK TEH PWNTAGE but of course the video was cool because Japan is cool they have that one poisonous fish fugyou or something.

  • I just love how some peoples' positive comments about the U.S. have been removed. You can love Japan. I love it too. But don't be traitor to your nation. If you hate the U.S. then buh-bye.

  • well said brother

  • Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh shaaaaaddup.

  • Kate is from Canada.

  • @fordmodels

    they're the same

  • Oh, please.

If you're talking to me, just know that I'm not a hypernationalist. I've traveled the world since I was 19. I value culture in various forms from art to literature to cuisine to fashion to music. Believe me, I'm far from ignorant. I just think it's absurb to down the country you call home. No one is forcing you to stay. It's a free country, you know?

    Be gone.

  • ouch! TechCrazy, you gotta be feeling stupid for making an anti-american statement against someone who is canadian! Smooth move, sherlock!

  • You must feel stupid. Haa

  • Why?

  • She's totally BSing her way through explanations, haha.

  • i am part jappaneses

  • shake too much...dizzy....

  • Take care baby, carry mace, and never accept late night requests from strangers.

  • Are you for real? I have moved to Japan, and this is the safest place in the world. This is not the USA.

  • i swear..just enjoy the video...of all the countries in the world...the american nerds always act like they know every single detail about japan, like it is their teddy bear that they sleep with at night...and don't you dare come against them.... i have come to figure out over here that emo = a love for anime/japan

  • Been living in Japan now for 17 years and 15 of those at my father-in-law's temple. He's the 2nd top priest of Nichi-len-shu in fact and will upload some videos soon. That includes one very special video gauranteed to be the first regarding a once in a life time ceromony for new temples. Living here & visiting here is very different...

  • You are uniquely qualified to tell us if it this video was disrespectful.

Same thing for Sri Lanka, living there and visiting is very different. Don't get me started on Guam.

  • Just wait, viewers, Kate will have another Japan video on Monday!

  • i love japan but i am living in ...germany aaaaahhhhhh

  • Technicaly you said "I am better than you" because you are not using the nihongo as the subject. And since there is no conversation talking about Japanese speaking ability, your sentence means nothing.

    だからもっと日本語を勉強したの方がいいと思います!オカマ。

  • Is it me, or did she look like a twig. Man, I know your trying to be a model, but eat for once sheesh. Im not trying to be rude, just being helpful. Thatvomiting technique is not healthy. please eat

  • むしろミッドガルの方が良いよ

    ミッドガルの神羅ビル来いよ待ってるぞ

  • OOOOH JAPAAAN! ^^

  • cool ^-^

  • It's rude to videotape shrines you know!

  • just like it's rude of u to say it's rude to tape shines and not say why...now stfu and leave

  • Right... I'll be doing that right away :P Considering your response was so well worded :P

  • We've requested a ruling on the rudeness of video taping temples from

titan123x who has been living in Japan for 15 years at his father in-laws temple.

  • Let's hope he replies. I'm interested myself. I just know someone living in Okinawa and he was advised never ever to videotape or take pictures of a shrine, and my understand is it's rude.

  • Konnichi wa, hajimemashite..

  • im like the shushyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

  • fpaldks- dude, you just copied and pasted. twice.

and you can't speak english, btw

  • I wanna go to japan....

You should have bought Gundam Models, Manga and Anime!!

    nice vid

  • GOOD REPORT!

  • i am part jappanese!! For real!! No, lie.

  • good for u

  • LoL ..

  • shes adorable . WOOOT CANADIANS IN JAPAN . do us proud little one

  • Omikuji (the little pieces of paper) are not wishes....they are fortunes you purchase at a Shinto shrine. If you get a good fortune you take it with you. If you get a bad fortune you tie it and leave it at the shrine. The idea is that you leave the bad luck for the gods to deal with.....I won't pick on her too much as she just got to Japan, but I hope nobody considers her an authority

  • Thank you for clarifying that. I really appreciate Japanese culture and would rather be INFORMED then Misinformed :)

  • No doubt, no doubt. We really appreciate "Bikini Baby on a Hot Sunny Afternoon (part 4)" and being INFORMED at the same time.

  • Thanks "fordmodels" I love your replies. It's more entertaining then some of the video's themselves. Don't forget Part's 1-3 too and my favorite is Kung Fu Baby Brushing Her Teeth :) Hope you enjoy!!

  • Wow, nice to see all the haters out there. Young models don't have to be Tyra Banks quality people. Besides, it is Ford Models anyhow..

She may be a bit ignorant about Japan, but she doesn't live here or speak Japanese. At least she is trying.

At least enjoy a chuckle that she calls Gonbachi in Nishiazaba a "typical" Japanese restaraunt.. no need to get on her case about what she knows or doesn't know.

  • i enjoyed this vid

  • HEy Kate, the vid is great, i'll be looking forward for your next video =)

  • This may just be me, but doesn't videotaping a sacred place or shrine seem a little disrespectful?

  • It depends on the culture, usually they have a sign posted if there are no photography. I know in Nepal it was fine to photograph the buddhas, but in Bhutan it wasn't.

  • not really so much here. like mannyhannygirl said, there are some places that have signs that say no pictures, but i've found that department stores are more likely to have those than shrines and temples.

  • Very good Job, Kate. Hope to see more of you in Japan.

  • Hey kate! If your reading this, thankyou for showing what japan is like. I know it my be part of your job as a model, but I apreciate it, i'm only 15 and I'm gonna get put in for a GSCE in japanese! I'm really interested in the language and the culture! So thanks anyway! And don't let them idiots effect your modelling career with them sad comments! The're just Bakas! lol! I hope you had a wonderful time in Japan and enjoy your modelling career, make the most of it!

    cat.

  • Looks like you're really enjoying yourself. Tokyo is so much fun! I'm surprised at how rude so many of your commenters are! But you're a model and they're not. :)

  • Strange to see the comments here. Her accent is significant, but it's not bad. Give the girl credit for learning a little bit rather than just going and expecting everyone to speak english. The only thing I noticed that I think was likely to offend anyone was the references to 'fresh' when speaking of sushi. As to her not being model material...ummm...she *is* a model. As in, they're paying her to let them take pictures of her. Why are people confused by this?

  • GOOD LORD, DON'T EVER SPEAK JAPANESE AGAIN!!! Try to actually learn something before you pretend you know anything about Japan.

  • gahh, why do people never try to adopt the accent of the language they are trying to speak? Not sure why, I find it gross to hear an american/canadian accent in another language.. but it never bothers me to hear other accents in English, so maybe I'm holding a double-standard. And GOODness, someone tell her just to take more time with the claps, just 2 extra seconds standing there would be plenty to make it look as if she were respectful of and familiar with the practice. =/

  • If you don't know it, don't talk about it on the Internet.

Even though you are a model, please learn at least the basics.

  • o_o Well that's a shame you think so, since she IS a model and she got the gig anyways.

  • HAHAHA what a totally stupid and ignorant comment to make. I am so emberassed for you. She is beautiful. Its a wonderful thing to have models that dont look like they were just photo shopped. Really, SCIFI, I am painfully emberassed for you. Grow up. Nobody gives a damn about your co-workers. What a stupid comment.

  • A Model with those Rabbit Teeth?????? AAAAAAAAAAhahahahahah

  • Who?

    And why...?

  • i am asking u why???????????

  • Wasabi's different though!

  • You guyz are blind!

    She quite pretty!

  • Hi Tyra! Nice to see you on Youtube! Prepare to be stalked!

  • I personally think she's hot. A bit on the skinny side though. /= Anyway, have you ever seen "Dove Model Ad"? They do some CRAZY STUFF with photoshop before the model ever hits the page, so I wouldn't be talking if I were you.

  • Learn to use verbs.

    Learn to use punctuation.

    Learn to spell.

Then maybe I will take what you say seriously.

  • 唉,我还是回家种田吧。

  • define ugly?

  • Well everyone has their own idea about what is beautiful. I don't think shes ugly. I don't think she looks good enough to be a model either. But that's just my opinion.

  • Search Youtube for "Dove Model Ad" if you don't quite get it.

  • nice video!! waiting for your next japan video!

  • Take it off!

  • and the pizzas the same too

  • Did you go to the bar where japanese businessmen pay men in speedos standing on platforms to scream at them? Try the sushi place in Hawaii where you can eat off a model. Were you there for the festival of the dolls? Search "japanese burning dolls" or "festival of the dolls"

  • while in japan, try sushi. it's good. 5 stars.

  • Hah, funny.

  • LUCKY!!! I always wanted to go to Japan well gl with the job u have hehe =]

  • lets see some tokyo!!!!

  • ahh, the dream job, *sadly puts down doughnut*

  • no dont! pick up the doughnut eat it and still be lovely don't let the bad ppl who think skiny is hot win! hot is hot skiny fat some where in the middle it shouldnt be about size it should be about beauty and you can be any wieght and still be beautyfull.

  • silly kate, they don't worship the gods, its just tradiion.

  • Hey, i wanna get married with this girl!

  • Congradulations on surviving your first week in Japan. For someone who came into the country without much prior knowledge, she's done quite well. Best of luck and keep posting your videos!

  • I'm heading there for the first time a month from now on an exchange program. I'm pretty nervous. I'm gonna be north in Hokkaido though, not mainland Honshu where Tokyo is.

  • Japan is a lot of fun; just keep an open mind, be willing to learn and try new things and you'll do great. I was just came back from studying abroad in Nagano Prefecture and it was a blast - unfortuantely didn't get to go to Hokkaido though. Have a great trip!

  • Don't worry, next week Kate will be visiting Kyrgyzstan.

  • What can you do in Kyrgyzstan? o__o I've never heard anyone even suggesting going there :o

  • And the paper isn't really prayers, they're bad fortunes that you have 'drawn', and you hand them there, so that they won't come true.

  • not all true. they're also prayers and wishes. They wrap them on the tree, and later they burn them to send the ashes up into the sky. Though the act isn't religious to them anymore, it's more like throwing a coin down the well.

  • Maybe that's true for one of the smaller temples, I don't know...

But at the major ones, they have separate places to hang prayers and bad fortunes, like at the Meiji-jingue in Tokyo, where you hang wishes and prayers around a tree, written on wodden plaques.

Fun to see your video, your major being Japanese. I guess I'm not technically allowed to challenge you, since you're sempai?

  • you mean MY major or hers?? Cuz my major is japanese and I've stayed in Japan for three months in traveling abroad. I'm leaving again this monday to go to Rikkyo for a year.

  • Yes, I did mean your major. I doubt she's had anything to do with Japan before this, other than a visit to the local sushi back home in the US.

And you're lucky to get to travel to Japan AGAIN. I have to wait another year before I can exchange to Japan...

And I miss it a lot. It was so much fun the last time I visited.

  • yea it is fun. But it has it's ups and downs like any other country. And i did more research on the paper things, and you're right, they're fortunes. I had the impression that people wrote their wishes on the paper... but then i remember getting one for 100 yen and it told me a fortune... then i tied it on the side where all the good fortunes are.

  • I didn't know "God" had two syllables.

  • "God" doesn't, but "kami" does.

  • Bah, I really want to go when im older.

  • I think japan is a really exiting place, i really want to go there (:

  • ONE thing. When she's at the temple, she mentions how to ring the bell and why they do it. She told you to do it right, but the reason why they do it isn't to pay respect, it's to get their attention when the person is praying. By ringing the bell and clapping your hands, you're saying "hey look at me! listen! i'm talking to you now!" Plus she needed to clap louder.

Most people in Japan don't call themselves religious, despite all the temples and shrines there are.

  • Thank you for clarifying that.. would be nice if she did better research before misrepresenting.

  • Research??? She is probably just being given a quick explaination of stuff by some one at the agency who has to take them around and show them the city. Would you give a bunch of kids a full briefing if you had to be their tour guide in stead of doing your normal work?? Probably not.

  • Why take it so personal. If that was the case then the tour guide should be retrained. Either way, they have misinformed many people who are watching on youtube and that is not right. Someone should be accountable and since she is the host I am directing the comment towards her. Don't take things so seriously.. you'll have a happier life that way.

  • We're not taking things so seriously. But we are serious about "Bikini Baby on a Hot Sunny Afternoon (part 4)" being a thoroughly researched and yet still entertaining video.

  • wha?? "Someone should take responsibility?" Obviously some staff person isn't taking things seriously enough to give her a proper explaination of things.. they have to get things ready for the Bikini Baby video..... The one who asked for "better research" and such was.. hmm... who was it again?? Please don't misrepresent yourself with conflicting comments, you may be "happy" but you sound a bit confused. The Bikini Baby video would be a good video to relax with??

    I need some tea now.

  • FYI, Kate produced this video herself. We kept the the big ol' corporate hand in the NYC office whilst Kate went to Japan with a video camera. We haven't had a chance to check Kate in Room 101 for reeducation purposes, but rest assured that Kate in Japan Season 2 will be a veritable doctoral thesis in Japanese Studies. FYI2...when the Crocs splash in the wading pool it's like butterfly wings over lotus petals. Japanese Gold!!! ありがとう

  • Served. You got served. tokyokaminari got bloody well served.

    ROPPONGI HILLS!!!

    ROPPONGI HILLS!!!

    ROPPONGI HILLS!!!

  • I got served? People still use "served"? Ok, so Ford Models didn't show her around, then she is just a slightly misguided girl or someone had given her some half-ass info. But a bit of ignorance by a tourist is not a reason to call for someone to "take responsibility" for it. That just seems a bit much to me. 六本木ヒルズが大したところじゃない。ミッドタウンの方が全然いいよ。

  • well she was just giving some tidbits. if you really wanna get specific it wasn't really a temple, its a shrine. but it's not that big of a deal, it's just a quick explanation.

  • For the Japanese American US Marines stationing in the land of their ancestors for our United States Flag, SEMPER FI. Ooorah!

  • tokyo aint a cheep place to be

  • Nice, I've always wanted to go to Japan!

  • Different cultures are always great. I actually have a friend who's over there right now. Very nice video.

  • Aww. I wanna go to Japan soooooo bad! don't pay attetion to all the negative comments. Just feel bad for them that they don't have the self esteem or humanity to be kind.

  • I WANNA GO!!
