Thats a nice z and all but not fast at all, i had that same car, color, 5sp and all and still got whooped by an old 4cy 240sx, it was just slow as fuck, but t tops were cool and the dd gauges to, but i sold it to by an 87 irocz28 350tpi, now that real power.
well i've only found TT's is all i'm saying. i know the 280 had a straight 6 all the way back to the 240's & my z tops out @ 167 cause it isn't stock, plus had it dyno tuned. i can text you a pic of the speedo. i had a friend that rode with me when i took it up to 145, then he mysteriously got uncomfortable, so he can back me up, i had the 89's tranny fitted to my 86 block, had a lightwieght driveshaft milled for me at a truck shop in Detroit, & the rear was out of a 87 turbo. anymore Q's?
btw, thats pretty sad that yours tops out at 130, i'm sry for ur loss. take it to a shop, remove any governor, and make sure ur tires can handle it, i was stupid when i did it, and could've killed myself easy. check if ur muffler is clogged too, mine simply had a cutout i never showed anyone...
dude, if u hav the chance to get one, do it. if its like really cheap, check the radiator and the rear subframe connectors, i got mine with both of those shot for $1500 popped those guts in there and went zoom. the throttle response is awesome at least on the stick. mine didn't originally come with a stick, it was converted from the TT model's 5 speed as well as the rear end. If u need help finding parts, i know where to go, just ask. Do u have any good pics and info on the one ur lookin at?
So yea, they drive well, i could smoke the first 3 gears, so its light. if you were planing on keeping it awhile but still have fun, i would suggest getting bigger wheels and lower profile tires, the suspension should absorb most of the shock. if u get the TT model, it has adjustable suspension. the NA model new tops out at 160, mine, with the tranny/rear end swap and light drive shaft and the 120k topped out at 167. :) definantly get it, i can give you pointers...i foolishly traded mine...
man i got so high on those fumes that day...turns out it is the trans that was leaking on the the cat converter, that will fixed on the 28th of september!
at the current moment, its on the carlift @ my dads work, the trans seal is leaking and could use a new bearing but all we are doing is the seal, nissan has admitted that they were guessing on the seal. we're waiting till monday for the seal to come in, then i'll probably see about shooting a vid. the trick is 2 not get caught this time. i'll probably jus speed up to 75 and call it good. a couple hours b4 we put it on the lift; one of my friends got me 2 go 100, and boy could i hear a dry trans.
Is insurance very expensive on this car? I found a 1986 Nissan 300ZX 2+2 with only 38,000 miles on for 6k. This would be my first car but my parents would be paying for insurance. I thought 6k was a great price for this car with that low miles. I just need to know if the insurance will be a ridiculous amount. Thanks.
I honestly have no idea yet, we are going to licence it after we get the stuff fixed up for it, i'll be able to tell you in about 2 weeks, is yours the non-turbo model, or the twin turbo?
i guess my next reply didn't come through... Im pretty sure the non-turbo is still worth it. It has 165 hp and tops out at 160mph stock. Mine isn't stock however, it has a custom made driveshaft and an aftermarket trans, the majority of the drivetrain on this car came off a twin turbo model, but the only real difference is the lack of turbos. I'd get the car if i were you, send me some pics when you can. Its fun doing a burnout in 3rd gear in the backyard
turns out our most dangerous and fastest car, this one, is the cheapest to insure. where are you located? I can find these for a lot less then 6000...
probably just cause it is the japenesse equivilent to the corvette, think of it has a super high end mazda... it has 90,000 miles on it. we just replaced the windshield and we are getting some new parts for it. the rear sub-frame mount was very shot and the axle would hop around during the aceleration and deceleration processes. and with an aftermarket 5-speed (used to be an auto-4) it has a custom built driveshaft, just needs some seal work around where it connects to the trans.

also, get a performance clutch for it, they help stick to the flywheel at a higher resistance (newsflash, lol)
williamshaw3rd 2 years ago
scratch that, 88 tranny from the turbo model (whoops) but still
williamshaw3rd 2 years ago
actually, ur thinking of the single turbo 280zx, the predecessor to the nissan Z. its a light ass car in my opinion. it drives light.
williamshaw3rd 2 years ago
how do they drive? might buy one... is it pretty quick? does it feel light? i'm worrried it would handle sluggishly...

i suggest putting a rb25det or rb26dett in her
i am getting a 25/30 so rb30det combo and a ppg dogbox lt12s ecu and all that at lewis engines in South australia
just find a good dyno centre to tune.
any way good luck on the build up it will take time but hey thats cars for you.
makdadyblk 3 years ago
I highly DO NOT suggest that. RBs are a waste of money, for what it costs doing that swap you can build a monster VG with 400+whp

I am assuming its non-turbo since it doesn't say anything else. I will have to call and ask. Will it not be worth it if its non-turbo?
