yeah, uh, still learning hebrew, so yeah... but it's cool you wrote the words in hebrew and didn't bother to put a english translation... awesome song and great job btw
For those of us who do not read Hebrew, a phonetic pronounciation of the Hebrew words would be helpful. I used the original video with my kindergarten class last December. They loved it and insisted we play it everyday. They loved learning all about Hanukkah!
The dreidl is that spinning top with the four Hebrew letters Nun, Gimel, Hey and Shin on it. They stand for “Nes gadol haya sham. Translation: A great miracle happened there (here). The legend is that the Maccabee fighters would whip out a dreidl and play if the Greek soldiers came upon their hideaways.
Transliterated: Maoz Tzur: translates from the Hebrew as "Rock of Ages", is traditionally sung after reciting Hanukkah blessings and kindling Hanukkah lights.
The lyrics were written about 800-900 years ago in Europe. The tune that is considered to be "traditional" in most parts of the Jewish world today, is an adaptation of a German folk song.
@xxxmexxx01 you only say that if you live in israel because that's where the miracle happened. but, since they aren't in israel, they say nes gadol haya sham, meaning 'a great miracle was/happened there.' just clearing it up...
