  • Not... Quite... What I had in mind when I searched for 'hunting song'... o_o'

    Beautiful nonetheless. :)

  • at the time this (and bert jansch) came out, it was considered a variation of "underground" music. I knew 3 people who knew of this and fairport convention and the incredible string band, etc. and i was 1 of those three. everyone else was listening to ironbutterfly

  • Wow. Why have I never heard of/read about this band before?

  • Surely no other group in history has contained four more gifted musicians than Pentangle? Jacquie is great too, but those mouth contortions are very distracting - in a sexy way!

  • To quote Sidney "pop" Larkin - PERFECT!

  • great band, great music.

  • 23 people must have had the "circle come full turn" on them.

  • 'Strange that I should meet you here- Come, sit by me.'

Have seen Renbourne a couple times (Iron Horse in MA); he's amazing. And this is my favorite Pentangle song. Great stuff!

  • I am glad to see that younger people appreciate this music.

  • Anyone know if this gig available on DVD? Pentangle need a definative DVD box. If you like this, check out John Renbourn's 'Faro Annie' album from 1971.

    Keep it folky y'all :)

  • How would you catagorize this- is it folk music?

It seems to have a definate jazz edge.

  • @notmemate At the time, the Folkies asked Bert, John and Jacqui McShee, 'Why are you hanging around with the Jazzers?" ... The Jazzers, naturally, asked Danny Thomson and Terry Cox, "Why are you hanging around with the Folkies?". Many were shocked. Some didn't understand. A few just bugged out and got down. Now, fortunately, we can listen to the sublime and beautiful vibe and just appreciate it, without the baggage.

    Dig Pentangle!

  • @notmemate What makes music great is the blending of different influences which in turn gives us something new and fresh. If you feel the need to categorize it - then call it folk-jazz :)

  • @notmemate I personally would categorize this as "brilliant".

  • I discovered Pentangle in 1970 when I was twenty. I had the incredible good fortune to see them live at Tufts University in Boston, late '71 or early '72. Their music remains some of the finest my generation ever made - and that says alot. Their albums are on cd - get them.

  • @StevenTut I envy you so bad!

  • does anyone know where i can find the guitar chord of this?

(23 people will burn in hell for disliking)

  • wow. the song is awesome enough then at the end a vocal fugue. they know their shit for sure. very impressive. Bert Jansch RIP

  • incredible!!

  • R.I.P Burt. The music will always live on.

  • Bert was a 20th century troubadour...this band rocked my world at aged 12!

  • Playing a lot of Bert and Pentangle now.

One of the greats has gone. I could do without the crap about angels, though.

    David B

  • RIP Burt Jansch

  • Thanks for sharing your talent with the world=)Enjoy the next part of this journey••••••

  • We miss you a lot, Bert.

You'll be playing with angels from now!

  • Not deaf, just dopey. We all owe you one, Fawnface. Dear, dear Bert - God bless you.

  • Hypnotic. Regretfully, I haven't listened to them for over 30 years.

  • RIP Bert Jansch

  • Bert, you absolutely killed it on guitar. Great songwriter to boot RIP!

  • JANCHY BOY I LOVE YA

  • R.I.P., Bert.

  • Sorry to hear Bert Jansch has passed away. This masterpiece is a fitting tribute to the man.

  • Bert Jansch is one of my main influences. I'm a nobody in the world of folk, never even played a proper set in front of a live audience, but I know for a fact that thousands upon thousands of other people involved in music in some capacity hold him in similar regard, and that certainly means something, and speaks volumes for his contributions. RIP to a very very special and important man.

  • Celebrating the life and work of one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th century

  • RIP, Bert: your music will live on forever...

  • REST IN PEACE BERT

  • RIP Bert!

  • For years this band's cds have been sitting in this record shop in a flea market near me. I see them everytime I go there and I consider buying them. After listening to a few of their songs on here, I will be the proud owner of these discs by saturday night.

  • danny thompson is a beast

  • わたし と 同じ 髪型 の 女性。

    やはり、ライブ というもの は アーティスト は 静かに、この メセージ を 感じて 欲しい のでしょう。

  • This band changed the way I played music. I'm 22; proper ol school rock boy. Led Zep and all those great guitar bands. This band helped me inot my folk thing man. The best move I ever made. Thank you Pentangle!

  • Why does it have to finish?! Can't it last forever?

  • I like the base. The base. The buttery biscuit base.

  • @TheRealBoroNut You mean the bass. The bass. The crispy woodland bass.

  • Bolton's finest band ever!

  • im on asid.as allways. and i'm thinking... after i saw this gem..i could DIE.....happy...sort of...

  • five of the greatest British folk musicians of their time! Brilliant! (OK Danny Thompson is possibly more of a jazz musician but...)

  • she's a van eyck picture

  • still mesmerizing

  • i totally agree her face with the classical look and long floeing golden locks would have been perfect in a painting from the renaissance masters ! we have to check 21st century attention disorder at the door and transport our imagination back in time! back back back you are getting drowsy your breathing is slowing and you feel the enchantment coming over you...

  • @Ukabumba: What I mean is that her face shows no emotion whatsoever.

  • Beautiful voice, but her face is annoyingly deadpan.

  • @jbockman3rd whats deadpan?

  • @jbockman3rd Anybody who could tire of gazing in awe at Jacqui's face must be very dead of spirit. She is a girl of rare Renaissance beauty - her facial subtleties convey a range of nuanced emotion. She is the queen of my soul - really , jbockman , do you not wish to withdraw this absurd charge of being....DEADPAN ! My god man , there are people of sensibility reading your commentaries :)

  • 21 now

it wasnt me i 'liked' it just poinying it out

  • 21 now

  • Is this BBC production available on DVD? Any region will do.... but Region 4 or 'All' would be handy.

If so, what is the name of this title?

  • She,s got a 13th century face dont you think?

  • @repsalg

:-\ Well, if that is a question.... I'm not a time traveller from the 16th C and I can't trust the highly stylised images of that era as a reference point. I can't imagine she looks like a 16th C Asian or African person would.

One thing for sure though, she would looks a lot cleaner than someone from 16th C Europe would.

  • @repsalg

Yeah, I see what you mean, the oval shape common in European art from that era.

The Long Blonde hair and the embroidered collar of her dress contribute to the feeling though.

  • バート・ヤンシュとジョン・レンボーンのペンタングルの貴重映像

  • BRILLIANT BAND! - what happened to todays music? Back then every band had a unique sound and made a lasting contribution which is still relevant today. There are lots of talented musicians todays, but the music is awful. Besides Radiohead, I can't think of 1 decent band. I think Bert just released a new album. Didn't Danny Thompson work with John Martyn?

  • @ecojot Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many metal bands..

  • Amazing Talent beautiful sound!

  • She can sing over me holding grapes any day! Id be her slave with a voice like that.

  • Last sighs of the last Golden Age... Such were these glimpses of Indoeuropean Light... For this is not Anglo-saxon, but rather European! This is as Homeric as Celtic! Evolian Tradition...

  • My gods, Danny Thompson is a genius.

  • A 13th century rock and roll song! it has it all! fair maiden, rugged beau, evil land-owner, love within grievance loss and wanting!!! 13th Century rock 'n' roll ROCKS!!!

  • Although I'm a total, heavy rock person I do actually appreciate this kind of music. A great era. A different mentality to now.

  • This is awesome. Where can i find this on dvd? I love when John plays the sitar.

  • The closest recording today is Blackmore's Night

  • I used to go to friends and his folkes had only 3 lp's the 1st pentangle disreali gears and wheels of fire cream no-wonder I started smokin' the sensi!

  • OMG, I used to love this band and just completely forgot about them. Great to discover these videos.

  • Wow.. I'm young.. Not born when this band existed... :O And i don't know much about them.. But! They sound so magic..

  • @BrutalAbduction The Band still exists (though perhaps not in the original line-up) look up Jacqui McShee's Pentangle.

  • @Doubledig :D My bad then... I sad i don't know much about them.. :) So i apologize to all Pentangle fans...:)

  • Are 20 people deaf? >:(

  • @Elvinauk No, they simply lack taste.

  • @Elvinauk..... You know nothing of music you C**T, Your probably an Ndubs fan ! \m/

  • @carrow00 WTF????????? I adore Pentangle! My comment was re: the 20 idiots who had hit the "dislike" button at my time of posting. I don't think it's me who is the C**T ...

  • @Elvinauk 21

  • @MultiRibka Insert expletives of your choice...

  • @Elvinauk it might be just the opposite i'm afraid. this xylophone-like instrument has some sounds badly chipped. i don't have time to check which ones are out of tune to tell you and pose for a person with an absolute pitch. personally don't mind it actually, i love the song. but i can imagine that people with sharp hearing might have hard time listening to this one.

  • Just amazing.

  • This still sounds great all those years on 'lot of good memories , 'lot friends passed on but this still the music lives on as before. Thank you

  • Wow what a beautiful girl, so medieval like!

  • This is some quality music. The guitar playing and chemistry is awesome. Class!!!

  • Fantastic voice, music brilliant, eat your heart out Mr Cowell

  • What I always think is, Imagine what Simon Cowell, Danni Minogue and Cheryl Cole would say about Pentangle. Modern music is crap, manufactured rubbish. It is actually quite strange, seeing REAL music, and of course you need to have an attention span to listen to it: a thing which is sadly lacking in many these days.

  • This song just goes to prove that great music is timeless - it also helps that this performance is so incredible.

  • The band I chilled to as a teenager .... plus Fairport Convention... this song still sounds fantastic

  • Forty years later, and there is nothing even remotely comparable to the quality of this performance by a contemporary group of popular musicians. This video will remain an important part of the historical record when future generations study the British folk revival of the mid-to late 20th century. The members of Pentangle should be revered as gifted performers, ingenious musical innovators, and preservationists of tradional music. Viewing this simply makes one long for days past.

  • @irelephant Espers sound pretty similar they definatley took this influence.

  • This whole take is one of the most precious things I have ever seen, Thanks Fawn.

  • muito bom :) a voz da Jacqui é incomparável

  • The whole band is bloody beautiful. :)

  • does anyone here listen to steel eyespan? if not you should definitely check them out, if you like this you'll probably like them

  • @lardmonk Steeleye Span :-)

Jacquie McShee, Maddy Prior of Steeleye and the incomparable Sandy Denny are all worth checking out if you like the tone and rhythm of english and scottish folk music

  • @dariogneri Indeed, but i must admit i wasn't acquainted with sandy denny, thank you for the connection :)

  • @dariogneri and @lardmonk,

ahh, Sandy Denny.. Let's not forget that she was on Led Zepplin 4, the, err, "fool on the hill" album hee hee.. she duets on vocals with Robert Plant on "Battle of Evermore".. :0)

  • @lardmonk ***** absolutely!

  • *dances round fire naked*

  • Incredible! Thanks for posting this!

  • Classic stuff, love John Renbourn's electric guitar on the folk! Terry Cox on the drums quite rightly stated as a Genius! and Danny Thompson on the bass ... has to be the best double bass player in the world.

  • I have never heard of this band but they are cool. The girl Jaqui was cute in her day.

  • @MickScarborough She would be cute today ..any day in history ...there's no time period for beauty

  • These guys were way ahead of their time. Too bad they didn't get much exposure if the USA. Really, really good stuff! :-D

  • this percussionist is way under-rated he's a genius. check him out around 4:30, playing his drums with the bell mallets. not just a 'drummer', he's a percussionist... and a dam good one. everybody in the group is a genius....let's not forget the percussionist....a mighty fine player indeed. a 42

  • Too good. Never gets old

  • That's a tough drum riff there.

  • This is absolutely mesmerizing. I've loved this for a long time but could never understand all the words Jacqui was singing. I finally found the lyrics online and now I like it even more.

  • Sublime

  • mooiste muziek ever, i love you my victoria.

  • perfect song! I loves this band! <3

  • Bert is drunk as ever while John hides in the background - lol

  • I agree ,so far I've burnt steaks, veggies, etc.-repeatedly.And for my latest trick was washing dishes & took a youtube break interrupted by my NEW neighbor downstairs knocking on my door to say water was coming out of kitchen fan vent, Hoo boy....

  • What's life all about anyway?

  • @ letsif genieten van muziek en de natuur en de liefde, dat is leven eigenlijk.

  • I know the second part .

It sounds like a german childrensong "Theo spann den Wagen an....² or something like this...

cool band, good song to relax..=)

  • @Trollvolk yes, it's an old round about gathering grain in a summer rain. Hey, ho. Spann den Wagen an, wenn der Wind treibt Regen uber's land. Hol den golden Gaben, hol den golden Gaben! Hey, ho..... Same tune is used in an english version. Hey, ho, nobody home. Eat nor drink nor money have I none. Yet I will be happy! Hey ho,..... Peter Paul and Mary use that last in one of their songs... (Tomkin goes searching...)
  • unbelievably good/

  • does anyone know which ballad(s) this is from?

  • god...so beautiful..one of them best songs.

  • she looks like gaga

  • WOW!!!! one of my fav tracks from BASKET OF LIGHT!!! and its all live!!!

  • Thanks, I do enjoy very much!

  • So smooth...

  • this is beautiful

  • what guitar is bert playing anyone?

  • amazing!!!!!!!

  • she was gorgious

  • Il fascino.

  • can,t improve on what,s already been said. I hope others continue to discover this great band. many thanks for posting

  • It gives me the shivers.

  • hopefully people will continue to discover them

theres nothing like them still around and they act as a great escape from the modern bullshit that passes as music

  • @TheDalaiLuke So true!!! :-D And their sound is so classic that it sounds as good today as it did in the late 60's early 70's. It's timeless! :-D

  • @TheDalaiLuke Not a lot of people around that can sing like that.

  • @TheDalaiLuke muse and radiohead are not modern bullshit

  • @LewJayDubProductions

But Keisha, Katy Perry and all the emo music is.

  • @TheDalaiLuke Oh please, yes we were fortunate to have been blessed with wonderful music, but my children's generation have some wonderful stuff. Went to 4 Radiohead concerts with my son. They are not Sandy Denny, but they are good!

  • @TheDalaiLuke

Music doesn't get much better than this....

  • @TheDalaiLuke Hey, wow! Well said, man!

  • @TheDalaiLuke Check out The Baltimore Consort...they are great.

  • @TheDalaiLuke . I couldn't agree more..

  • @TheDalaiLuke Well said brother !

  • So glad people are still discovering this phenomenal group of musicians

  • Its mesmerizing, but try looking at her lower jaw during the entire video, its kind of funny^^

  • i just heard this band 3 days ago and already i think they may be the best band ever

  • 5:39 to 6:39 just blew me away

  • wow... so glad i discovered this band.

  • One of the best bands to come out of the 60's/70's...Light year ahead of what so many other bands were going.

Does anyone else hear how this band would have been perfect on the ECM roster of wonderful artists...

  • Stunning live performance - my favourite video on youtube

  • Stunning live performance by masters - my favourite youtube video

  • Stunning live performance - my fave video on youtube...

  • That bassist is going to town on that standup base, im loving this so much=)

  • lol no shit! He certainly is rocking it out! via 13th century!

  • Danny Thompson :)

  • ..GREAT!!!

  • Por Dios!

¡No conocía a esta banda! Ni esta rola. Gran capacidad, son muy buenos.

  • Please try for Nightwish - Islander should you get bored with this for some (unlikely) reason :)

  • just amazing !!! and the bass... so incredible !!!!

  • Great memories thanks for the post

  • Jacqui's voice.....what a voice , so amazing !

  • Jacqui is so lovely, but how can one get a lungful of air to project sitting down singing

  • I don't think it's mimed gennx30. Bits are exactly like the studio track but other bits not. The beautiful harmony section near the end is superior to the recorded track and extraordinarily beautiful. As is Jacqui.

I'd watch her sing "I want to buy the world a coke" never mind the beautiful ballads unearthed by 60's folk revival.

  • The guitar playing, and the drumming and singing are insane!

  • this song is just so amazing, that bass playing is just insane

  • Holy crap. He's sweeping the bass and tapping harmonics and stuff. That is just awesome.

  • Nice!

    *****

  • Love this song, had it on LP, so really a treat to see them perform! Many thanks!
