at the time this (and bert jansch) came out, it was considered a variation of "underground" music. I knew 3 people who knew of this and fairport convention and the incredible string band, etc. and i was 1 of those three. everyone else was listening to ironbutterfly
Surely no other group in history has contained four more gifted musicians than Pentangle? Jacquie is great too, but those mouth contortions are very distracting - in a sexy way!
Anyone know if this gig available on DVD? Pentangle need a definative DVD box. If you like this, check out John Renbourn's 'Faro Annie' album from 1971.
@notmemate At the time, the Folkies asked Bert, John and Jacqui McShee, 'Why are you hanging around with the Jazzers?" ... The Jazzers, naturally, asked Danny Thomson and Terry Cox, "Why are you hanging around with the Folkies?". Many were shocked. Some didn't understand. A few just bugged out and got down. Now, fortunately, we can listen to the sublime and beautiful vibe and just appreciate it, without the baggage.
@notmemate What makes music great is the blending of different influences which in turn gives us something new and fresh. If you feel the need to categorize it - then call it folk-jazz :)
I discovered Pentangle in 1970 when I was twenty. I had the incredible good fortune to see them live at Tufts University in Boston, late '71 or early '72. Their music remains some of the finest my generation ever made - and that says alot. Their albums are on cd - get them.
We are putting on a Bert Jansch Tribute All Nighter this Saturday 8th October in a church by the River Thames in Surrey Quays, SE London. Lots of performers!! Bring A bottle and come and celebrate the mans music and life!!!
Bert Jansch is one of my main influences. I'm a nobody in the world of folk, never even played a proper set in front of a live audience, but I know for a fact that thousands upon thousands of other people involved in music in some capacity hold him in similar regard, and that certainly means something, and speaks volumes for his contributions. RIP to a very very special and important man.
For years this band's cds have been sitting in this record shop in a flea market near me. I see them everytime I go there and I consider buying them. After listening to a few of their songs on here, I will be the proud owner of these discs by saturday night.
This band changed the way I played music. I'm 22; proper ol school rock boy. Led Zep and all those great guitar bands. This band helped me inot my folk thing man. The best move I ever made. Thank you Pentangle!
i totally agree her face with the classical look and long floeing golden locks would have been perfect in a painting from the renaissance masters ! we have to check 21st century attention disorder at the door and transport our imagination back in time! back back back you are getting drowsy your breathing is slowing and you feel the enchantment coming over you...
@jbockman3rd Anybody who could tire of gazing in awe at Jacqui's face must be very dead of spirit. She is a girl of rare Renaissance beauty - her facial subtleties convey a range of nuanced emotion. She is the queen of my soul - really , jbockman , do you not wish to withdraw this absurd charge of being....DEADPAN ! My god man , there are people of sensibility reading your commentaries :)
:-\ Well, if that is a question.... I'm not a time traveller from the 16th C and I can't trust the highly stylised images of that era as a reference point. I can't imagine she looks like a 16th C Asian or African person would.
One thing for sure though, she would looks a lot cleaner than someone from 16th C Europe would.
BRILLIANT BAND! - what happened to todays music? Back then every band had a unique sound and made a lasting contribution which is still relevant today. There are lots of talented musicians todays, but the music is awful. Besides Radiohead, I can't think of 1 decent band. I think Bert just released a new album. Didn't Danny Thompson work with John Martyn?
Last sighs of the last Golden Age... Such were these glimpses of Indoeuropean Light... For this is not Anglo-saxon, but rather European! This is as Homeric as Celtic! Evolian Tradition...
A 13th century rock and roll song! it has it all! fair maiden, rugged beau, evil land-owner, love within grievance loss and wanting!!! 13th Century rock 'n' roll ROCKS!!!

@Elvinauk it might be just the opposite i'm afraid. this xylophone-like instrument has some sounds badly chipped. i don't have time to check which ones are out of tune to tell you and pose for a person with an absolute pitch. personally don't mind it actually, i love the song. but i can imagine that people with sharp hearing might have hard time listening to this one.

Forty years later, and there is nothing even remotely comparable to the quality of this performance by a contemporary group of popular musicians. This video will remain an important part of the historical record when future generations study the British folk revival of the mid-to late 20th century. The members of Pentangle should be revered as gifted performers, ingenious musical innovators, and preservationists of tradional music. Viewing this simply makes one long for days past.
Jacquie McShee, Maddy Prior of Steeleye and the incomparable Sandy Denny are all worth checking out if you like the tone and rhythm of english and scottish folk music
ahh, Sandy Denny.. Let's not forget that she was on Led Zepplin 4, the, err, "fool on the hill" album hee hee.. she duets on vocals with Robert Plant on "Battle of Evermore".. :0)
Classic stuff, love John Renbourn's electric guitar on the folk! Terry Cox on the drums quite rightly stated as a Genius! and Danny Thompson on the bass ... has to be the best double bass player in the world.
this percussionist is way under-rated he's a genius. check him out around 4:30, playing his drums with the bell mallets. not just a 'drummer', he's a percussionist... and a dam good one. everybody in the group is a genius....let's not forget the percussionist....a mighty fine player indeed. a 42
This is absolutely mesmerizing. I've loved this for a long time but could never understand all the words Jacqui was singing. I finally found the lyrics online and now I like it even more.
I agree ,so far I've burnt steaks, veggies, etc.-repeatedly.And for my latest trick was washing dishes & took a youtube break interrupted by my NEW neighbor downstairs knocking on my door to say water was coming out of kitchen fan vent, Hoo boy....
@Trollvolk yes, it's an old round about gathering grain in a summer rain. Hey, ho. Spann den Wagen an, wenn der Wind treibt Regen uber's land. Hol den golden Gaben, hol den golden Gaben! Hey, ho..... Same tune is used in an english version. Hey, ho, nobody home. Eat nor drink nor money have I none. Yet I will be happy! Hey ho,..... Peter Paul and Mary use that last in one of their songs... (Tomkin goes searching...)
@TheDalaiLuke Oh please, yes we were fortunate to have been blessed with wonderful music, but my children's generation have some wonderful stuff. Went to 4 Radiohead concerts with my son. They are not Sandy Denny, but they are good!
I don't think it's mimed gennx30. Bits are exactly like the studio track but other bits not. The beautiful harmony section near the end is superior to the recorded track and extraordinarily beautiful. As is Jacqui.
I'd watch her sing "I want to buy the world a coke" never mind the beautiful ballads unearthed by 60's folk revival.
Not... Quite... What I had in mind when I searched for 'hunting song'... o_o'
Beautiful nonetheless. :)

Jacqui is so lovely, but how can one get a lungful of air to project sitting down singing

Holy crap. He's sweeping the bass and tapping harmonics and stuff. That is just awesome.
