@evaksanTube Mochi is squeezed rice, so its kinda tasteless. Its beeing used for desserts (like Daifuku) and as base for drinks. You can add many kind of flavors to it.

Im not so sure about getting the new fashioned one, I believe they do sell it in stores in America.But either way this should be fun to make. If you would want to get the old fashioned style もち(mochi) maker you would have to get that online.The thing is heavy too so.Plus you have the mallet to go with it.(this comment goes from my starting comment below and then stops from this paragraph)

And once you've done that you can either just eat it like how it is, you don't have to bake it in a oven or anything.And or create yourself あんぱん(anpan) which is a sweetbean paste.(You should look into that as well). (more info after this comment) >_>

Using both old fashioned way and like this(which is the new fashioned way) you have to put a whole bunch of flour onto a flat clean surface,I mean like alot.Some people using the old fashioned way have to pound it and rub water in their hands and pound it because of course,its sticky.

Wow...you people are sooooooo slow. x]. もち(mo-chi) is basically cooked rice and you either pound it or make it in (for example) this kind of machine.Its really sticky substance and you could choke on it.Thats why you have to take SLOW AND SMALL bites. The Japanese most likely use this on New Years Day because New Years is like the biggest most important holiday to them,(They think Christmas is like another day).
