“The study of theology, as it stands in the Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on no principles; it proceeds by no authority; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing; and it admits of no conclusion” - Thomas Paine
William Lane Craig will happily tell you god can be scientifically tested, but his arguments are so convoluted and disjointed it's like trying to nail soup to the ceiling.
purely Devil's Advocate here, but i think the accusations are not so much that dawkins et al have the "wrong" theology, it's just that they are (supposedly) unaware of the various nuanced and more "advanced" forms of theology that are out there, and instead prop up the most simplistic, irrational theological concepts as being the only ones.
@OccamKant well, then one has to ask, why engage with them at all. i agree with you, it's complex hermenuetic acrobatics wherein the subject is a fairytale. but since that's the case, doesn't make sense to "debate" with them unless you're willing to sift through their bullshit and learn how they think. then when they whip out their "theology" you can show them you know it, and show them how it's still bullshit.
Arguing about which person has a more valid point with respect to the theology makes about as much sense as arguing about whether Superman can run faster than The Flash. While it may be an entertaining diversion, it makes no sense to seriously contemplate it, because what you are really talking about are obvious fictions.

Theology might as well be a degree in astrology. Or feng shui.

@BillKiernan And how is that any different than opinions on opinions of ancient fiction?
It's like arguing that Reviewer X has a more nuanced view of Harry Potter. Who cares? We're talking about fiction after all! ;)
