The death toll from the Japan tsunami is 10,000 and counting... just think looking at all those people... half of these voices will never sing again =(
Beautiful. I learnt from these Song of the Baltic Countries from 2 good friends from Latvia and Lithuania. God Bless the Baltic Countries for they deserve it.
In the world of globalism anonymity isn't so bad. I wish I could say the same about my beloved United States. We were born a republic and will die an empire. Esti forever.
Urmas, I will never have the pleasure of meeting you. But know that men know you. Your tiny country is the canary in the mine of civilization. Although the west offers money, resist.
From the first few bars I played of this song I fell in love with it, ordered a book of Sisask's music, have recorded it and sung it numerous times. I can barely listen to this beautiful song without tearing.

I would like to make it clear that there are NO "Baltic Song Festivals" . There is ONLY Estonian Song Festival. Now, since Estonia has become more integrated into the international relationships with other countries, the numbers of foreign singers has been growing, BUT, there is no such similar event no-where else in the world. Not in Lithuania, not in Latvia. Nowhere.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is at least a Latvian Song Festival. Not sure about Lithuania, but I imagine something similar is there also. Yes, our tradition is very beautiful, but it's not that unique. Remember, we all sang for our freedom.
Yeah, theres other song festivals also.I might be wrong, but i do believe, that estonian ones are the biggest and most celebrated. Origins of this event come from germany, though.
Rahvasaadik, I don't know if you really think like that or you're only trying to make foreign people think so, but anyhow you are very wrong.Of course there are song festivals in Lithuania and Latvia. And we'll have a Song festival, dedicated to the millenium of Lithuania this year.
By the way, remember Gaudeamus. It's the festival of students from BALTIC countries, and it's held in Latvia and Lithuania, too. Well, I bet you've never sang in such an event, otherwise you would know that.
Not just Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians! I am Icelandic too and I was there on the top left singing the alto :D only 16 years old but it was unforgettable! Nice to be able to see it !
The most beautiful thing about these amazing Baltic song festivals is the massive crowds of both singers and audience...who are ALL Estonians, or Latvians, or Lithuanians! The way our lands once, so recentl, were. They were OUR lands exclusively, as they once again must be if our European peoples are to survive forever.
This master piece is so unique that it should be spread over the whole world. I can do my part to realize that, because I am able to make translations of such works into not less than 30 languages, also into Finnish (I myself am half a Finn), Russian, Ancient and Modern Greek. So I have already done the same work with the famous Sarastro aria "O Isis and Osiris...", but with my own text. Are you interested? If yes, I would be very happy if I could hear soon from you and Urmas Sisask himself.
'Sanctus' was on the programme for one of the Nordic-Baltic choir festivals and it is among the most beautiful pieces of choir music I know and I love singing it. Seeing it being performed in Tallinn is marvellous and it brings back a lot of memories.
It's not ironic that one of the smallest countries in the world has the most beautiful of national expressions. There is not a free soul on earth who does not have an affection for this people.
That's a really good translation, kudos. :D I think it's "püha on vägede jumal" and the third one sounds like "õnnistatud -olgu-, kes tuleb Issanda nimel", but other than that, what you've got looks great!

This gave me goose bumps. Size does indeed matter, but so does performance :-)
GitaStreet 6 months ago
That is perhaps the only kind of art where we'll never see all 3 Baltic states performing together - there are no stages of such size.
I'd really like to see Estonian song festival live.

This is simply amazing to get more than 20,000 people singing together. They really have a message for the whole World.

Ein Klang wie der Chor der Erlösten in Jesus Christus im Himmel.
A sound like the choir of the redeemed ones in Jesus Christ in Heaven.

"püha" bedeutet meines (spärlichen) Wissens so viel wie "heilig"
und das kommt für mein Gefühl nicht nur mit Worten, sondern auch durch die Musik rüber!

Püha, Püha on Issand,
Püha on vägede Jumal.
Õnnistatud olgu, kes tuleb Issanda nimel,
Hosianna kõrges.
Best, Patukott

jcardas 3 years ago 7
Well the text is the classical Sanctus, translated into Estonian. Hope you`ll be able to find it.
patukott 2 years ago 2
Using the WordMonkey translator, I was able to come up, very roughly, with these 3 phrases that were used in the song:
Püha, Püha, Püha on Issand
Püha on ??? Jumal
Taevas ja maa on täis sinu au
Hosianna kõrgeis
Õnnistatud on ta kes tuleb Issanda nimel
Hosianna kõrgeis
I believe that there are errors in each one of the phrases, however, judging from the phonetics of it.
Any help from someone who speaks Estonian would be appreciated.
Thanks.
