Legend - drumming is a skill few can muster. Stewart Copeland MAKES songs - just listen to Message In a Bottle - he owns that song. The master, true true master. The rest are in his wake.
Stewart Copeland is not really a solo drummer like for example 'Sheila E'. He is more of a rhythmatist. I never thought he was technically brilliant ( dare i say ) like Omah Hakim... but stylistically he is definitly number one... especially back when he was younger in the 80s. When i first heard him play drums on a Police album back in 1979... I never looked back.Thankyou SC for moulding me into the drummer/ musician I am today. You are so inspiring.
Stewart Copeland is the reason I started playing drums. Outlandos and Regatta de Blanc IMO are some of the best drumming albums I've ever heard. He is able to play IMO almost any style of drumming. Reggae, jazz, rock...he's got it all. His drumming essentially made The Police as good as they were...Sting and Andy are incredible in their own respect, but no drummer could have ever taken Copeland's place. His technical skills, speed, sound, and precision are all just undeniably top of the line.
@jetfreak4 its so perfect. You just know its him right when he plays. And he gives this awesome feeling to a simple rock beat. Even on songs like Canary in a Coalmine you know its him. Maybe he isnt the most technical drummer, but a creative legend and my favorite drummer of all time
@austin78993 I actually disagree on him not being the most technical. No Time This Time, Regatta De Blanc, Walking On The Moon, Next To You, The Other Way of Stopping, and Nothing Worth Achieving all suggest him to be very technologically competent.
@jetfreak4 Oh he is technical for sure, but he isn't a huge chops guy. Some of his fills are just three strokes but he puts them in the most strange and unique spots ever. like some of the fills in one world not three. unreal. He can be a chops drummer when he wants to be but i feel that his real talent is to make something amazing out of very minimal playing.
@austin78993 I agree there. That's Stew's biggest accomplishment by far. He's not a soloist, but an incredible accompanist. His drumming incorporates many different styles...reggae, African, Middle East, jazz, rock, etc., and his rhythmic patterns are brilliant. He is not an easy drummer to copy by any stretch. He is the reason I started playing drums. Regatta De Blanc is one of the best drumming albums ever produced.
To the idiot who needs to go do some music history lesson!!!!!Go listen to The Police albums then come back and say something!!!! Drumming is not all about chops. They are great and have there place. But space, pocket, timing, placement, an ear and vocabulary will always make a better drummer.
Gavin played the most advanced stuff this week so far but holy studio tan! I don't think he get's out much. U have to spend mucho hours behind the kit everyday to play like that and I don't think that is part of Stewart's routine nowadays...
To me this was the best solo so far, maybe not technically and maybe to short but as soon as he hits a drum you can tell who it is playing drums, I love that he is raw and not so refined, he plays with passion, my fave so far honestly!
@HillDueceua I'm not saying it as an insult I am just saying he is not like say Gavin Harrison who I like a lot but to me he has more of a what I think most drummers would think of as a more perfect technique, what I meant is Stewart is just more raw in his whole approach his attack of the drums and I mean that in a GREAT way and that is what I preferred about Stewart compared to all the other drummers so far!
Damn, he was voted drummer #1...I think hes good, but does not deserve that title...quite "average" drumming here...WTF...I was little dissapointed as drumming speaking...
@MAGNVZ666 I always had mixed emotions on his drumming. He makes some great beats sometimes, but he really didn't show the mastery of the drum kit that Tony Royster Jr or Gavin Harrison did the previous nights. Definitely not a solo dude, more of band kind of drummer.
@5Nickon2therun5 I agree dude, despite all, I consider the "driven to tears" song as his "best" but compared to real solo drummers like Peart, Bonham, even Cozy powell...is weird...but Stu is ok for being a Powerfull rythm machine
I even paused porn for this!

He's left-handed so he may not be as confident/strong in his right hand...

I just wish Copeland would do a solo...he's certainly capable of doing a mind-boggling one....few would debate that.
