You're totally wrong, Dr. King was a Republican in the early 50's, because he grew up in the South that was controlled by the Southern CONSERVATIVE Democrats. He voted for JFK, and LBJ in the 60 and 64 elections respectively. Goldwater and Nixon (in 68 and 72) exploited the race issue to their advantage; look up the "Southern strategy" if you want to learn something.
The nucleus of the Dream Speech is a world where al people are judged on the content of an individuals character and not the color of said individuals skin. 98% of black voters voted for Obama. I heard it time and time again, *its time*, we need a black President. The fact is, the only people that judge Obama on his character (look at those he calls his friend) are those that voted against him. 11/04/08 is the day that black America killed the dream and sold their victimhood in the process.
"Direct action is not a substitute for work in the courts and the halls of government. Bringing about passage of a new and broad law by a city council, state legislature, or the Congress, or pleading cases before the courts of the land, does not eliminate the necessity for bringing about the mass dramatization of injustice in front of a city hall.
Indeed, direct action and legal action complement one another. When skillfully employed, each becomes more effective."
I like Bill M but I have to disagree. Sure what she said was "factual", but so was Bill C's comment when Obama won S.C.: Jesse Jackson won it twice. Both Hill and Bill are masters of P.A.M. The obvious racial subtext in American politics was: black people can march, white people will govern. But you can't blame Hill because on its face it was "factual".
Facts are objective, how you interpret them is subjective. What you're accusing is comparable to the creationist charges against Darwinism because some individuals have chosen to interpret them as a justification for racism.
Thank God we still have Bill Moyers to report history without emotion, bias or political spin. Martin Luther King and Lindon Johnson both knew that it took a lot of cooperative effort to get things done. No one man can affect change, regardless of how great the moral imperative.
It is important to put this comment in context, however, the context is not that of MLK and LBJ, but that of Bill and Hillary Clinton and the reputation for being willing to do and say ANYTHING to achiever their goals, whether they be a campaign or defense of sex in the oval office.
You're a disgrace. In context she was specifically asked about Obama's remarks on MLK and "false hope." That's the context. She replied with a benign statement.
If you are so naive as to believe the Clintons did NOT intend a subtle message in that comment, I will have lost all respect I've formerly had for your reporting.
What an excellent piece of documentation to make clear that only together can we change things for the better. Bill Moyers eloquently showed that each of us did what we were able to move in the right direction. My 'hero worship' of Rev King and his high praise of both King & Johnson probably stem from that same place of gratefulness for passionate people who have helped lead us and used their strengths to both inform and move us to work toward justice. Thanks Bill.
I challenge "sjcpony" to provide any factual evidence that the claims made by Bill Moyers in this piece are propaganda. If you're going to denounce someone, at least have the integrity to provide some evidence. Unless, of course, you are content to use ad hominem arguments, which means you are intellectually bankrupt.
Positive change is made more difficult in America because of the shamelessness of many European-Americans whose ancestors indulged the gravest avarice of mankind, the worst case of larceny in human history. Is this not paranoia and psychotic behaviour for one to think himself better human by skin color? After 400 years of holding and exploiting a people, there's still self-adulation for ending segregation - This is a form psychosis.
This remarkin itself is benign. But the political dynasties must come to an end. 28 years of Bush- Clinton are way too many. It must change now- Join other Democrats and Independents to keep Hillary out of the White House. We Shall Overcome.
Bill Moyers...his never ending quest to engage America in the fundamentals and "wisdom" of ultra-liberal politics. He's been paid mega-millions to promote all things Democrat, and denounce all things Republican. You call this "journalism"? Since when? He's been on the conservative-bashing side of political discussion all his life, and he's the darling of the "Times". No journalism here, just propaganda.
How is that segment democrat or ultra-liberal? The civil rights movement is a fact of history, and I think most people from ALL political views would agree it was a good thing.
Thank God for such a rational response. Regardless of whether you care for Clinton or not politically, willfully misinterpreting remarks and, worse, making baseless and polarizing accusations of racism is appalling.
What a shame that the New York Times has failed in such a fundamental way.
I wish that you would share more clips from Bill Moyers journal. His programs are among the most informative and objective forms of journalism available. I understand that you have to maintain your PBS viewership but bloggers can use your videos to reach an audience that may not tune into PBS at 9pm EST on a Friday night. This new audience may become faithful PBS viewers and contributors in the future.
Bill Moyers is such an intelligent and researched man. I wish I could meet him. I have never regretted watching anything he's done on pbs.

Why do I keep seeing videos with Obama and Dr. King together somehow... is it because they are both black?
Obama's change is not Dr. King's change.
Obama is a Democrat and Dr. King was a Republican. Dr. King understood the bigotry that still exists in the Democrat party.
